Well, that’s a wrap for baby Highlands this year! We just had our last one born today. Another bull. Last year it was all heifers this year it was bulls. We still have one more girl that will pop soon but she’s 50% highland. this guy sure is cute though. He looks like a little teddy bear. 🧸

I haven’t shared the latest news because I felt like all I ever put was sadness lately. I do have some sadness, but I also have good news. A couple weeks ago we had to put our sweet Mary girl down. She lived with excruciating pain that we tried so hard to fix, but unfortunately, due to her previous owners not taking care of her feet and coming to us with an abscess on her foot that we basically tried to fix for a year . With a history of laminitis so bad that she was living on pain medication with so much damage after X-rays we had to make the decision to put her down and free her from the daily pain she was going through. So Martha had to say goodbye to her best friend. She cried and it was so hard to watch that we decided we needed to find her a new best friend. So we Welcomed a younger mammoth girl to the farm last week. It did take them a few days to warm up to one another as Martha was still mourning the death of her best friend. But I’m happy to report. She now is happy with Lacey! ❤️ ugh farm life is tough! It’s also good. 😊 
On another note if you have Donkeys, I cannot stress enough to you to please trim their feet! I don’t care if they hate it keep doing it and they will learn .Take care of them because there will come a day when you have to, and if you cannot lift up their feet on a daily basis and care for them, you will face the same decision we had to make. I am just glad that we gave Mary a good life this past year. I am sure her life before was not good from the looks of her poor feet when she arrived.

I’m completely heartbroken and devastated once again and have no words for this one. Hank was found dead this morning. We have no idea why or what happened. He was completely happy last night when I fed him and he showed no signs of discomfort. RIP our gentle giant. You were loved by so many of us. 😢 I sure am going to miss looking out and seeing you.

How much should my mini be eating? 🤔 Has anyone out there ever “over-loved” a mini? 🙋🏻‍♀️ It’s really easy to do, especially when you are used to providing hay and grain to a larger horse (or if you like to see everyone out on green pasture).

The feeding rate for a mini is calculated the same as a larger horse. You should aim for 1.5% to 2.0% of their body weight each day in food. What does that mean? Well, you first calculate what 1.5 to 2% of their body weight would be, and then feed that amount every 24 hours in hay and grain combined.

➡️ Let’s say you have a 250 lb mini – you should provide just 3.75 lb to 5 lb daily in hay and grain. 🤯🤯

Many people are shocked when I tell them to feed only 5 lb per day to their mini… they assume I meant to say per feeding! 😂 The way I would break up the diet in this situation in 2 lb of hay each morning and night, plus half a pound of feed to meet vitamin and mineral needs.

Mini’s are predisposed to obesity which can lead to founder or metabolic conditions, so it is very important we don’t over-love our little friends with too much food. Be mindful of sugar, limit… or better yet, ELIMINATE, green grass (which is high in sugar). Only offer enough feed to meet vitamin and mineral gaps – diet balancers are great tool in this situation!

Our life is good. It is also hard. Really hard! Most days it’s fine. Some days I just want to throw it all away and move to a condo so there’s no work to be done. Some place that I don’t have to drive a minimum of 25 minutes just to get food but don’t because by the time i drive 25 minutes back home dinner could have been made. I go on vacation and 5 days in I miss all my furry kids. I miss the noise each animal greets me with when I walk out the door. How they see me and run as if saying hey mom! They all talk to me and somehow I know what they are saying. The good days are good but the bad days are terrible. We have had our share of bad days lately. Our sweet boy Mach diagnosed with osteosarcoma cancer was the worst. His days are numbered with us and I’m basically in denial. This past week Gunner our horse has a terrible wound on his neck that needed stitches not once but twice because he somehow managed to get them out. most recently after treating our mini horse Tabago for EPM and cushions we have decided it’s time. I looked at him in his eyes yesterday and he said im tired mom. So Wednesday we say goodbye. 😢 They say farming makes you strong. I think It definitely does.
All this and I still say I love where I am and I love the country roads. Im hoping maybe long life comes out of it.

Mach started his chemotherapy treatment today! Pray that he responds well and it kicks his cancer to the curb so we can get a few more years with him. He’s been such a trooper. 💕 We love this guy.

Mach update ….
I’ve been in a state of denial for the past 2 weeks. Thinking no way could our guy really have cancer. However we did get the report back and he does have osteosarcoma. 😥 we are determined to try and give him his best shot at life and try chemotherapy. even with chemo though the prognosis really isn’t much better. We will do what we can do but will not let him suffer.

Mach is doing OK. He’s had a belly upset and hasn’t really wanted to eat much but he’s hanging in there and learning to walk on 3 legs. He’s getting lots and lots of love from his humans .

Confessions of a farm queen….
So I had a couple different New Year’s resolutions this year. One was to learn how and succeed at making my own sourdough starter. (I failed a few months ago and gave up) The other one was to eat healthy and try to loose some darn weight! I’ve successfully made the sourdough starter! Woohoo!🙌🏻 I’ve entered a whole new world. Can I just say sourdough bread freshly made and slathered with butter is absolutely delicious! The problem is I’ve now discovered you can make all kinds of things with sourdough starter. I’ve made traditional sourdough bread. I’ve also made sandwich bread and I’ve made tortillas, I’ve made chocolate chip cookies, Yes!!! Chocolate chip cookies! I’ve made pizza and the most delicious pancakes ever! I am a crazy mad scientist over here! All that to say that the second New Year’s resolution isn’t going so well. 🤦‍♀️🤪
I’ve also been making nonsense in the freeze dryer that I won’t even get into at this juncture. 😳😆
