In my life, nothing ever goes as I planned.. So heres yesterday. Heading to South Hill to pick up a kitty and out from the median on the highway come bolting these 2 hoodlums.. I JAM on the breaks. Eden yells.. GRAMMA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? I pull over, put on the flashers and run over to try n grab them. Well I managed to sn**ch up one and race back across the road, I throw open the back door of the car and plop him on Edens lap. I race back to try n get the other one, who is having NONE of it!! Its easily 100 degrees and I already have sweat running in places it shouldnt be. Little bu**er sits just out of my reach and as I CRAWL thru the grass in the median he keeps backing away then runs into a culvert.. Meanwhile, back at the car... Eden is yelling, GRAMMA THIS PUPPY HAS TICKS ALL OVER IT, YUCK. LOOK IM PICKING THEM OFF AND THROWING THEM OUT THE WINDOW.. I said OK Eden, good job, now SHHHH so you dont scare the other puppy.. There wasnt alot of traffic, but everytime a car would be coming Eden would yell, GRAMMA... THERES A CAR COMING...Yes Eden, I know, its ok, just stay in the car with the puppy!!! So after like 30 min, by now Im certain I will DIE any second from heat exhaustion, and still dont have puppy 2. I call Sheriff Roberts and Im sure I sounded like an insane lunatic.. I could barely explain anything without breathing heavy and basically panting.. Poor guy probably thought he had some kind of pervert trying to prank him, except he knows my number, so Im glad he understood. Lol. He said he would call and have someone come help me. A few minutes later I got a call from a very sweet dispatcher who told me the ACO on duty would be calling and coming to help. Meanwhile, puppy is still out of reach but now has decided to come across the road by the car. Everytime Id get close he would try to cross the road again. At one point when I was squatted down in the median, an ambulance came by, turned around and came back to see if I was ok. At least 6 other people slowed or stopped to see if I was ok. Im sure they thought I was crazy being it was so hot, I was panting and red faced.. So I call Cassie Boyd because Im supposed to meet Holly Burnette to pick up this kitty, but now Im gonna be late cuz Im busy playing hide n seek with a little stinker puppy.. By this time Im completely soaked, out of breath and frantic cuz Im certain this little s**t is gonna dart out in the road and Im gonna witness its tragic end and be traumatized for life. Cassie calmed me down and told me she would get with Holly to see if she could come. Meanwhile the ACO called me back and said he was on his way but it may be awhile before he could get to me. Eden is in the back of the car, puppy on her lap and shes still bitching about the ticks. EEWWWW THERES A HUGE ONE IN ITS EAR...
So I settle down and think for a minute and a lightbulb goes off... I had a small wire crate in the backseat that I had planned on using for the kitty... EDEN, Shove the puppy in the crate.. Eden says, WHAT??? Its too small... EDEN, JUST SHOVE THE PUPPY IN THE CRATE AND SHUT THE DOOR.. OK GRAMMA.. Ok Eden now help me get the crate out.. Eden, "WHAT??" By this time Im ready to pass out from the heat.. So we get the crate with the first puppy out and set it in the grass about 10 feet off the road..INSTANTLY the other little puppy sees his buddy and runs over and starts sniffing and giving Eden kisses... I say, EDEN, SCRUFF THE PUPPY... Eden.. WHAT?? ME, EDEN JUST SCRUFF THE PUPPY AND DONT LET IT GO...Ive got the crate door open barely enough for me to reach one hand in and hang onto the 1 puppy, while she scruffs the other puppy, holds him still and I sn**ch him up and shove him in!! SUCCESS!!! 2 puppies saved from the road.. We head to South Hill, Holly helped me bring the puppies inside to give them water, some pizza, lol and cool them down. I grabbed kitty and off to Brunswick AC we went. It was nowhere in my plans to be chasing and catching renegade puppies... But no way I could leave them there. So... Here come the thank yous . HUGE thank you to Sheriff Roberts, his dispatcher, and ACO that helped me, and big thanks to Holly and Cassie from Sweet Virginia Barn Cats love you ladies!!! To everyone who stopped to ask if I was ok, thank you, you have helped restore my faith in humans.
These 2 are at Brunswick Shelter and will be available for rescue or adoption after their stray hold, if not reclaimed.
