Update on SNAFFCats first operational action.

After trapping these four kittens and their momma plus her sister.

Amanda Pearl with South Sound Snip and Tip animal rescue took the kittens in. And I was able to tnr momma and her sister.

And all four kittens have now been adopted and will have a shot at living decent lives!

P.S.

They since have taken in two more kittens from me.

Well it's finally time to let these guys loose from their long hold.

I think that I've had them confined for about three weeks now?

And knew when I trapped them that it would be a weeks long hold before I could get appointments to get them into the clinic to tnr them.

But I did so in order the try and get the kittens placed with a rescue so they could at least get a shot at living decent lives through adoption.

And was successful with two. Unfortunately the white faced one was deemed to be to old and wild already.

And the final black one didn't go into a trap in time. And thus the window of opportunity had closed.

Because there is only so much that anyone can do! And right after taking the two kittens from me.

The foster for the rescue took in some bottle feeds. Which is A LOT OF WORK! So understandably was at capacity.

But two out of four is a hell of a lot better than none!

And two feral kittens getting spayed neutered and vaccinated along with two adults is still a win!

So being how a baseball could be thrown to where I trapped them.

Rather than trying to get them into traps again to take them over there and release them.

I just left the inner gate open and the trap door out of the outer one.

Plus placed their food and water on top of the litter box tote so they will see the opening right away.

And now they can do whatever they want? Although I think that they will still take advantage of their nice warm straw filled tote bed?

Not to mention take advantage of the food that I leave out for Tom and other neighborhood kitties?

But we shall see?

It's a boy!

Picked up the last kitten from the clinic this morning and found out it's a boy.

Now he's back in my isolation catio with the White faced kitten (see through tote) and two adults.

And in a few days I'll turn them all loose then tear that down as I prepare to move.

So that makes four more ferals tnr and two more kittens placed with a rescue.

Success at Last!

Due to my rookie mistake of not feeding the two momma kitties and two kittens I was holding in my isolation catio pre appointments.

I was only able to get one in on Tuesday when I had appointments for two.

Then got two in on Wednesday as scheduled. But was unable to get the last kitten in with them.

Picked those two up on Thursday and was still unable to get the final one in.

But got it done today! So now that's four more that will be tnr.

And two more kittens handed off to a rescue so they can at least have a shot at living decent lives through adoption.

Plus I've got 8 new traps that I recently purchased. Now it's time for a bit of a break as I focus on getting ready to move.

Then trapping a few more and attempting to get them in as walkins before I move.

And I say attempting because I'll only be trapping one at a time.

And if I can't get it in as a walkin two days in a row? It will be released.

Because I can not nor will not hold a cat in a trap any longer than that.

And that's the best that I can do for the countless ferals around me!

FINALLY!

IT'S TNR TIME!

So although I had three traps already and wanted two more better ones.

I went ahead and bought four more similar to what I already had.

Because they came with smaller bonus traps that will work just fine for kittens

So I got 8 for less then the price of two of the ones that I wanted.

Eventually I'll get some of the better designed ones. But right now I'm doing a financial juggling act.

But for now with the ones I just bought I have a total of 6 of the larger ones. And five of the smaller ones.

So I'll be able to loan a few sets out to different people.

But for now I have to pick up the white faced kitten in a couple of hours.

Because although I had appointments for two yesterday.

The dang varmints didn't cooperate at all! But I have an appointment for two today.

And black momma kitty and her baby trapped and ready to be dropped off when I pick up white face.

Hopefully Grey momma kitty will go into the final trap before I have to leave and I can get her in as a walk in today?

If not it will be soon. Because their food was cut off yesterday and the only way that they will eat is by going into a trap.

Not something that I enjoy. But necessary. And hunger will win out in the end.

Then she too will soon be spayed and vaccinated and once again running loose in what is their home.

And as they were trapped within baseball throwing distance.

Should any of them decide to stay around after being fed here so long.

And take advantage of the fact that there's always food water shelter and a heat lamp?

They're welcome to do so until I move. After which they will be on their own to find a new food source. Which I know that they will be able to do.

Wish that I could do more. But as of yet I haven't won the lottery.

Thus I can't have a cat Sanctuary just yet. So can simply do the best that I can.

To which I've budgeted 200 dollars. Which will get 8 more spayed or neutered.

Which I'll just randomly trap one at a time and take in as walk ins which I've had good luck with before.

But...how many I get in will depend on a multitude of factors to long to list.

So I'll just do the best that I can to achieve my goal. And if I trap one and can't get it in as a walk in after trying two days in a row?

It will be released as I simply can't do anymore holding.

Even if there are kittens involved! Once was enough! But to get two kittens handed off to a rescue it was worth it!

Update.

Although I have tnr appointments for both momma kitties and both kittens in my isolation catio tomorrow and Wednesday.

I just found out that Black momma is in fact tame not feral!

Which sent me into emergency scramble mode. And thanks to advice from Amanda Pearl with South Sound Snip & Tip rescue.

Which is the rescue that has taken in 6 kittens from me.

I was able to make arrangements to take her to the humane society so she won't just be tnr.

And I just bought two new traps. Which while not the high quality ones that I want.

Will do for now. And they came with bonus traps for smaller animals that will work for kittens.

So that gives me 4 full size ones. And 3 small ones. And although I previously turned down offers to do so.

If anyone wants to donate more? I'll take them! As of now I'm out of pocket a few hundred more than I've raised.

And I plan to spend a few hundred more to tnr what I can before I move.

Which the sudden need to do combined with other life events has me juggling everything!

But juggling does not equal giving up! And when I move I will continue with SNAFFCats.

Even if it's just me assisting existing rescues in my new area for now.

Only one more week until the first two go in for their tnr spay and neuter appointments.

And it's been a long hold! Which is something that I've never done before.

Although I was prepared to once before. Fortunately in that case I was able to get the four kittens handed off to an animal rescue right away.

Who have since been adopted! And I was able to get momma kitty and her sister into the clinic as walkins without appointments.

Thus I was able to release them back where I trapped them right away.

But with these ones I went ahead and trapped them knowing full well that I might have to hold them for awhile until appointments were available?

But I went ahead and did so because there was (a chance) of getting the kittens to a rescue?

Which happened for two of them. But the black and white one was deemed to old and wild already.

And I didn't have the final younger black one yet. And by the time that I finally trapped him or her the window of opportunity had closed as the foster was at max capacity.

But two made it and will get to avoid the feral life! And these four will be tnr.

So I definitely call that a win for the imperfect world in which we live!

09/13/2023

THANK YOU!

To those that donated to my go fund me.

I'm having difficulties figuring out how to directly say thank you through there?

So will say THANK YOU here. I will now be able to add a few dollars to what I've raised to get two good quality traps for future use to tnr.

And I'm going to match what's been raised so far to tnr more ferals around my place after I get the four in my isolation catio in for their appointments on the 26th and 27th.

PLEASE SHARE!

Can you help them?

25 dollars gets a feral cat spayed or neutered and vaccinated.

I thought I had sources lined up for vouchers. But the supply is limited.

So I currently have four tnr candidates in my isolation catio and five vouchers.

Which means that after I turn these guys loose I can tnr one more.

Unfortunately I recently invested thousands into my business to keep it alive.

And NEED to spend another 3 to 5000 more. But can't until after I pay my state quarterly taxes twice. And my federal taxes at the end of the year.

So am currently trying to build my business account back up.

And I'm out of pocket around 600 dollars for the initial expenses for SNAFFCats.

While my go fund me has only raised about 100. Plus I now have to move!

Which changes my SNAFFCats recruitment strategy etc.

BUT I HAVE A PLAN TO GROW IT AFTER I MOVE! AND WILL BE DOING OUTREACH TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO OBTAIN MORE VOUCHERS SOON!

But my typical work week is 70 or 80 plus hours 7 days a week.

And every single day this week has something in my appointment book. Plus 5 days for next week so far.

So until things slow down a bit for the winter I'm a tad bit busy. Thus it will take time.

BUT THERE'S A WHOLE BUNCH OF FERAL CATS AROUND MY RV PARK!

AND I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO TNR AS MANY AS POSSIBLE BEFORE I MOVE!

My go fund me is pinned at the top of this page. So if you would like to help a feral or two get tnr? All I need is money and I can make it happen!

Thanks!

OUTSTANDING!

I FINALLY got the last kitten I was after. And to be honest I was REALLY STARTING TO WORRY that something bad had happened to it without its momma around.

But it's now back with its momma in my isolation catio.

Along with another momma kitty and her kitten all of whom were running around together and thus get along.

There were two more kittens in there previously. But a foster for an animal rescue took them.

However they were understandably uncomfortable taking the slightly older one.

But that's two out of four that will now have a shot at living decent lives through adoption!

And this one is a younger one as well. So I might be able to hand it off as well instead of just tnr?

The two adults and the older kitten are all tnr candidates however.

But that makes four adult female tnr. And six kittens placed with rescues.

Four of which have already been adopted with two awaiting their turn.

And one more whose fate is yet undetermined around my RV park just recently.

Plus several more I've managed to help in the past. Now I've got to get vouchers from another rescue and get them into the clinic so I can release them and get some more as there are plenty around here.

And I now have a green light to trap and do with them as I please.

Which means tnr and WHEN POSSIBLE getting kittens placed with rescues.

Plus Jerry came inside again this morning with me up and about!

Now I can go back to my catio job today relaxed knowing that all is well.

And if I get it done today that would just totally rock as I have a project for a rescue I'm trying to squeeze in I would like to do tomorrow.

And my appointment calendar is full to the point that I'm going to have to do a juggling act! But that's normal. Lol

Making (progress) on gaining the trust of Jerry a recent tnr hang around that decided he liked the food I put out.
Along with Tom who looks like his identical twin. Thus Tom and Jerry.
Tom however is a true feral that is just now allowing me to even see him from a distance!
While Jerry has obviously had some human contact but is extremely distrusting.
Although has warmed up to me to the point that I can walk up almost right to him.
And he will lick up their paste type treat they like from my outstretched hand.
Or eat canned food off of a spoon as I hold it out to him.
And the reason he's in my catio with my four adoptees. Is because his preferred hangout spot became on the wire on top of it!
Which allowed him and my guys to somewhat rub against each other.
So I decided that if he wanted to be with them so bad? That I would allow him in to visit.
But he's not going to brainwash me into adopting him and moving in!
And I really really mean it this time! No matter what he might tell you?

09/01/2023

I really hate to just tnr this little guy. Or gal?

But that will most likely be it's fate along with one other once I trap it?

Which I'm now getting desperate to do so will set after work in early early am.

Then as I have to be up early to go build a catio will hopefully have it?

If not? I'll be able to do night and early morning trapping over the weekend when they're more active.

And I'm getting vouchers to get spay and neuter surgeries paid for along with initial vaccines.

So if anyone in my area (Puyallup Wa) wants to adopt a true feral kitten or two that are approximately 2 to 3 months?

I would gladly let you have them after their appointments!

But....as true ferals THEY WILL REQUIRE LOTS OF TLC!

Start off with them in a spare room or garage. Then just go in and sit in there with them and read a book or something as you let them simply get used to a human presence.

Then when they're comfortable enough to roam around with you present.

Let them have the run of the house and LEARN TO TRUST YOU.

BUT ABSOLUTELY UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN YOU ACT LIKE A DRUNK 20 YEAR OLD GUY THAT'S DETERMINED TO GET SOMETHING ON THE FIRST DATE AND GET ALL GRABBY AS YOU TRY TO FORCE THEM TO GIVE YOU AFFECTION THEY'RE NOT READY TO GIVE!

And it can be a long drawn out process. But. Watching an animal thats absolutely terrified of you transform into a sweet loving animal that wants attention from you is EXTREMELY REWARDING!

I've done it with two true feral kittens and two adults. And am currently building a relationship with a fifth. Although he's obviously had some human contact in the past.

And although still extremely leery of me. He will now take treats from my hand.

Boy did I mess up!

I knew that with my isolation catio being so small. And two adults in there with the kittens. That separating them would be challenging at the least shall we say.

Because it was a given that true adult ferals would TOTALLY FREAK OUT.

And of course the kittens would feed off of that vibe. Just like a human child will start crying etc if it's mom totally freaks out about something.

So it turned into a real s**t show when the foster lady from the rescue showed up.

But I got the three kittens into carriers. However she only took two.

Because one is a bit older as I'm Apparently dealing with two different litters.

Which explains the two adults. From (the little bit) I observed I was sure the black one was the momma.

But someone else thinks the Grey one is. Now I'm sure it's two mommas and was two litters.

So the Remaining one will just be tnr along with the adults.

And most likely the other one when I eventually trap it. (No luck this morning)

And then I'm done for now as far as dealing with kittens.

I just don't have the space to deal with them appropriately for now.

But I'm 99.9 percent sure that I'll be moving the first of the year.

Because my rent is going to 700 from 480. Which I could live with.

But I specifically moved into here because of the relaxed nature of the park management.

And that's changed. And I don't like the new rules and regulations.

Plus I've simply outgrown the space with my business already.

And come spring my demand for space will just increase.

And I can see the writing on the wall that I'm already exceeding what they will be happy with.

So although it will be a bit more driving. I'm moving to a private residence on acreage that abuts a pond.

With all the space I need. Plus a garage! At which point I'll be able to build my varmints a real nice catio.

Plus a few indoor isolation catios in the garage. To include dedicated kitten only space.

And being able to go into an enclosure with just kittens totally changes the dynamics!

Not to mention that leaving my regular job and transitioning my catio business into a full time thing will take a lot of stress off.

As is I'm just running in to many circles without room for anything.

And to be honest. Between my Monday through Friday job and a part time small business.

I'm borderline burned out. But...I know that the catio business is about to dramatically slow down for the winter.

More kittens ready for handoff to an animal rescue for fostering and adoption!

Although I only currently have three out of four. But I'll soon have the fourth.

Plus I have momma kitty and another young adult that runs around with them ready for tnr once I get appointments.

And have one more Grey adult I plan to trap for tnr as well.

The foster from the rescue is supposed to pick up kittens tomorrow.

And I'll bring the fourth one to her if I don't have it by then?

The adults will just remain in my isolation catio until tnr appointments.

And I just personally spoke with the GM of the corporation that recently bought the RV park I live in.

And have a green light to continue trapping adults for tnr.

Plus WHEN POSSIBLE get kittens to rescues for a shot at living decent lives through adoption.

08/28/2023

PUBLIC PRAISE FOR SOUTH SOUND SNIP AND TIP ANIMAL RESCUE IN DES MOINES WASHINGTON!

This is the rescue that not long ago (conditionally) took 4 feral kittens I trapped.

It was conditional because they were slightly older then rescues will generally take in as it just takes to much time to socialize them.

And thus get them used to humans so they can be made available for adoption.

So the condition was to give it a week or so and see how they progressed?

And if deemed not suitable for fostering? Other actions could be taken.

To include tnr as a last resort. But THEY DID IT! AND WITH A LOT OF TLC ALL FOUR HAVE BEEN ADOPTED AND GIVEN A SHOT AT DECENT LIVES!

Now today they just drove over an hour to drop off two high quality traps for me to borrow.

Because I recently spotted some more fairly young kittens.

And got a green light to trap them along with their momma and another adult.

The adults will be held in my isolation catio until tnr appointments then returned to their home.

But the rescue has a foster ready to take these four kittens in as well.

And once again it will be conditional. Worst case scenario is they get tnr.

Which means brought back and returned to their home. Not simply released somewhere else or relocated!

But...they to will at least get a shot at having a chance to live decent lives through adoption!

And no matter what the rescue deems to be the course of action that they want to take?

I 100 percent support them and anything that they choose to do!

After all. There is only so much that humans can do. And rescues ARE simply overwhelmed because of irresponsible humans!

P.S.
The former property manager also gave two less desirable traps afterwards.

One kitten size. And one adult size. And I currently have one as well.

So although I don't like them as they're vastly inferior I will use them for now.

And although the intention of SNAFFCats is to ASSIST current caretakers of feral cats that feed them get them spayed and neutered for free.

With free transportation to and from the clinic by providing them with traps and showing how to use.

Then taking over AFTER THEY BOOK APPOINTMENTS AND TRAP.

With kittens in my immediate vicinity I will get more involved at take the actions necessary to get them to rescues as soon as possible.

08/15/2023

YES YOU CAN!

By no stretch of the imagination can it be said that it's a quick simple task to get an adult true feral cat domesticated.

BUT IT CAN BE DONE! These are two of my such adoptees.

Mister Friendly (inside) is now my little couch buddy. Every morning as I make coffee he jumps up onto the table.

Then onto the fourth platform on their cat tree. Then he waits for me.

And after I briefly pet him there then sit down. He immediately jumps to the carpeted cat tree then the couch for some attention.

While Boomerang (in catio) was as wild as they get and absolutely terrified of humans!

But after about 8 months of feeding her. (And others) I saw through the window that she was pregnant one day.

So I lured her into an enclosure and trapped her. Then took her and her babies to the humane society the day they were born.

Two months later she was brought back and released as per policy. (Thus the name)

And whoever fostered her? Did an excellent job of getting her over her (total fear) of humans.

So although she still had real serious trust issues and remained under my trailer in hiding when I was present.

I had something to work with. (Unfortunately I couldn't lock her inside one on one which would help tremendously)

So I started putting her food right next to my trailer by the steps in the morning.

Then I would sit there and wait her out. And when she eventually stuck her head out to get a bite to eat attempt to pet her.

Which often resulted in getting hissed and swatted at as she jumped back underneath out of reach.

But EVENTUALLY we got beyond that. And she started to actually like being petted.

Then started to follow me around when I was outside. But always at a distance!

And after a full year I officially fully adopted her. And built an isolation catio for her next to my existing one.

That allowed her to deal with one stress factor at a time while in close proximity to the other three.

After a bit I simply opened the gate between the two catios making them one.

And although she would come inside to eat because that's where the food was.

It still took the better part of another year before she was truly comfortable around me.

Now she comes in every morning for breakfast. And several times throughout the day and night.

And will walk over to me and stand at my feet wanting attention.

And if I kneel down. Will drop onto her side and eat up the attention.

But she still won't jump up on the couch with me. Yet!

Meanwhile the one peaking out at me from under my trailer is one of two recent tnr hang arounds that look like identical twins.named Tom and Jerry.

But I was told that there's approximately a two year age difference between them.

And while Jerry has obviously been around humans before but has become extremely distrusting.

He's started to trust me a bit although not enough to let me pet him. Yet!

And I let him into my catio so he can visit with my four as he really wanted to be with them.

But he only comes inside when I'm gone. And will instantly run back out if I come home while he's inside.

And Tom there is a true feral that's just now starting to let me even see him.

Which is a big step! Because they're not simply feral cats.

They're cats that HAVE BEEN FORCED to try and survive on their own because of human neglect!

And thus are simply trying to survive. And they view humans as potential threats.

Imagine how you would feel around animals as big as us if you were their size and trying to survive in the wild?

Want easy? Adopt a dog! But if you want a truly rewarding challenge?

Adopt an adult true feral cat that's scared to death of you and give them the time space distance and tlc they need to learn to trust you.

Then watch a truly amazing transformation process happen before your eyes!

Awesome week and weekend!

First I had my second phone conversation with the general manager of the corporation that recently bought the RV park I live in.

And it went excellent once again! He's into my idea of me offering ASSISTANCE to my immediate neighbors that currently feed feral cats tnr them.

But I need traps! And thus money as 4 good ones will run me around 500 dollars!

Went to the largest cat convention in the Pacific Northwest in Seattle.

Where I was able to talk with multiple rescues and get a line on vouchers so I can provide free spay and neuter surgeries to my neighbors for ferals they currently feed.

ONCE I GET TRAPS! Which is more than I can do on my own at this time!

Otherwise I'm limited to assisting existing rescues with transportation needs for now.

But the need is huge and rescues simply overwhelmed!

So donations are desperately needed so a dent can be made in a problem caused by human neglect!

08/11/2023

Second phone conversation with the general manager of the corporation that recently bought the RV park I live in went excellent!

The next step will be an in person sit down meeting with him at his office.

Following that I'll be ready to start offering ASSISTANCE to my immediate neighbors that currently feed ferals.

BUT I NEED TRAPS! AND THUS MONEY! SO PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING THROUGH MY GO FUND ME.

As of now I have one call into a rescue that provided vouchers for tnr at a local clinic previously.

And am simply waiting to hear back from them. And will also be at the largest cat conversation in the Pacific Northwest this weekend to reach out to other rescues.

So highly confident that I can get the surgeries covered.

But I need four appropriate traps to start with! That will allow me to take two cats in for surgery.

And replace those traps with new ones so the next day I can simply take two more cats in when I pick up the two dropped off the day before. And so on as needed.

Outstanding!

The RV park where I live has been sold. And I recently spoke with a manager of the corporation that bought it.

In which I offered them my services to ASSIST other tenants tnr feral cats that they feed.

An offer that could be extended by simply including a notice included with rent due statements beginning in September. (And strongly encouraged by them)

And it was an extremely positive conversation in which they were receptive to the idea.

So now I'll soon have new recruitment fliers from the printers.

At which point I'll ask for an actual in person meeting and sit down with him in person to discuss it further.

So far I've been able to tnr half a dozen or so adult ferals just around the space that I physically rent.

Two of which I eventually adopted and domesticated. Not a quick easy task!

And 11 kittens to rescues/shelters early enough to be given a shot at living decent lives through adoption.

As well as adopted two myself originally before taking their mother in for tnr and putting food out for her afterwards thus attracting others and beginning this journey.

Which with the reproductive cycle is EASILY a reduction of well over 100 cats forced to live as ferals just in my little community alone.

And I'm just getting started! In two weeks I'll be at a big cat oriented event at a major event center in Seattle Washington.

In which a person from an animal rescue that will have a booth there has invited me to.

So I'll start my FULL BLOWN recruitment efforts for SNAFFCats at that time as well as reach out to other rescues to start relationship building.

UGH!

What a day!

It started off real good with a phone call that looks like will translate into work on a small project Sunday August 6th.

Because although after running hard for a few months and thus deciding to be lazy and take this past weekend off.

I'm also planning to take Saturday August 5th off to attend my mom's 95th birthday party.

I know...I should work. After all. There will be more birthday parties.

But I'm just not that committed to making a buck. Or helping others that much.

Gee....how am I ever going to succeed? Oh well...I'm not trying to get rich.

So anyhow. I then went and picked up a deposit so am now booked solid until the 4th weekend of August.

And I have another bid to do tomorrow! So after that I went to pickup my new SNAFFCats fliers.

Only to get a text from the one other person that was on board informing me they were backing out.

Because they don't want to drive! Which has always been the crystal clear mission objective.

But that's OK. And no derogatory statements are either wanted nor needed!

And although suddenly not being allowed to post on the subject in a Facebook neighborhood group where I always get a great response.

After doing so once. And similar posts are allowed by others REALLY HURT!

I WILL NOT QUIT! AND I SHALL GROW THIS! there actually is an action plan in place and being actively worked at.

But...a BIG PART of it requires waiting on others to do their thing.

And I just shot myself in the foot because I realized that I forgot to say on the fliers.

On Facebook as SNAFFCats. And go fund me to help with startup costs there.

So now I have to go order new ones tomorrow and change the pdf ones as well.

UGH!

But that's OK. I learned a long time ago as a young Paratrooper that you DON'T EVER QUIT WHEN IT'S REAL!

YOU SUCK IT UP AND PUSH THROUGH IT! And I'm alive today because of that.

Because that mindset allowed me to do what my Doctor later said ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE while I was bleeding to death internally.

There wasn't time for a life flight to the nearest trauma center that I desperately needed because I would have bled out in route.

Thus an extreme emergency splenectomy (spleen removal) was done under far less than ideal conditions.

And over 60 percent of my bodies blood supply was pumped out of my abdomen when they cut me open.

But I drove a semi over 20 miles to the nearest hospital.

Then walked (staggered) across the street and parking lot before entering the er.

Where I made it to the counter and muttered. I need a Doctor before graying out.

So this ain't nothing! And I'm OK with it being just me helping rescues to the degree that I can. FOR NOW!

Because tomorrow I correct the fliers and then go into recruitment mode.
