This is the face of a dog who came into the training center stressed and worried and left happy and content.

This was his second time at the Homeward Bound Waggin, inc- Training Center, the first time he spent the entire time just wanting to leave. He didn’t want to play, he didn’t want to eat, he just wanted to go home.

The second time I had a surprise for him though…

I decided to have one of his favorite volunteers meet me there. The plan was to show him his favorite people don’t just exist at the shelter (crazy right?!?) they can go other places too!

So I had her wait inside and as I brought him out of the car and through the parking lot he was stressed and not particularly happy to be back. He didn’t even want to stop and smell the grass where other dogs had gone potty.

But when we came in and he saw one of his people his whole demeanor changed! He took a minute to settle in, but before long he was playing tug, fetching, and eating food!

That was our only goal for the session. Come to a place you previously thought was scary and stressful and just have fun. As you can tell by the photo, I think we accomplished that goal!

It’s taken over 2 weeks, but we did it!!

Last Monday when Chance and I had our first official training session he was TERRIFIED of the big tug toy, let alone the spring pole! With patience and a lot of play we are now here. He’s not perfect, but it’s a fantastic start!

So why the Spring Pole?
Well, first of all it’s fun… I mean just look at him having a blast on it! Secondly it’s a great way for a variety of people to play with him, even the volunteers who typically avoid tug out of safety concerns (he’s a big dog, and trust me, playing tug with him is major work out 😅)! It also helps build impulse control, gives him an appropriate and biologically fulfilling outlet for his energy, and is a great motivator/reinforcement for obedience skills. When you are in a kennel most of the day like shelter dogs are, it’s nice to have somewhere to put all that pent up energy!

Not only is Chance learning lots of useful behaviors like Place, door manners, leash manners, Middle, Etc… He is also learning how to be a gentleman when volunteers are doing chores.

By giving him a fulfilling outlet (training and play), and some clear direction on what is and is not appropriate, he is now able to settle and calmly let everyone do their own thing. Previously he would have been pestering everyone in the room to play with him and using his big head to toss his big toy into their legs 😅

While this is an important skill at the shelter, it’s also an important skill when he finds his forever home! Nobody wants to get bullied while trying to get stuff done around the house! He’s doing a great job learning there’s a time and place for everything.

Meet Chance!

Chance is adoptable through Homeward Bound Waggin, Inc and is currently working with Nerdy Dog Training to help him be the best dog he can be!

He has a big personality, loves to play, and thinks he’s a tiny lap dog. He would love a home that will continue his training, give him plenty of physical and mental exercise, and can give him clear and consistent boundaries. Chance also needs to be an only pet.
