Of course after taking my hatching break I loaded up silkie and Easter egger eggs in my incubator to go out and find her on a secret nest that already has eggs pipped 🙃
Just an Ohio gal raising chickens and ducks down here in NC. Focus on silkies and silver appleyards

Of course after taking my hatching break I loaded up silkie and Easter egger eggs in my incubator to go out and find her on a secret nest that already has eggs pipped 🙃
One of my ducks is having a very bad day after laying this big egg on the left, normal duck egg on right and chicken eggs underneath for scale.
When I set up my cucumbers I wasn’t expecting them to over grow the trellis and almost get to the roof 😅
For size reference I can already barely reach the top of the square.
Do apple pickers work on cucumbers? 😅
What’s everyone’s favorite and least favorite part of raising chickens?
My favorite part is the eggs and watching their different personalities especially when that personality is that of a velociraptor when treats come out.
Least favorite is they keep playing dead in the middle of the yard giving me a heart attack.
Step away to feed the chickens and a leghorn always jumps into the feed barrel 🙃
Angry momma to be. If anyone else was checking on the eggs she would bite them with intent.
My nurse tried to stick an IV line in my chicken tattoo, unfortunately the vein didn’t take and now I have a nice multicolored tattoo for the next week or so.
Broody angry Cobra chicken finally trying to hatch out here own goslings instead of stealing baby geese from momma duck.
The grass is always greener where the chickens can’t reach it.
Mama Wilma with her three baby geese.
Got a random camera notification that there was a “vehicle” in my back yard. Here is said vehicle. 😂
The first big harvest from my little driveway garden.
May have been a bit late collecting some peas but now I’ll have pea seeds for next season!
There was a carrot but it didn’t make it inside
Hopefully my last project before little girl comes.
Got the momma duck moved to her own area so she can’t keep adding duck and chicken eggs to her goose egg nest.
Snagged the coop from my friend Mackie Ollis and Cindy S Ollis who have a bunch more of this model and a two story model available for a better price than Amazon or other big stores.
Here are the babies left from the swap. Most are pure silkies, there’s a few silkie Cochin mixes and one complete mystery chick. Either a silkie that only got the head p**f gene or could be a mix with polish.
I have one more hatch in about 2 weeks and will be taking the next few months off of hatching to bond with my newborn.
Would love to get these babies their forever home before it gets hectic around here. 😅 range from 1-3 weeks.
Goose baby 5 has hatched. Goosie (aka momma here(, likes to let the duck and chicken hatch the babies and then she tries to steal them 🙃
Here is some of the chaos when you have 3 different types of birds, and multiple chickens wanting to hatch babies but nest are all on different schedules. 😮💨
Between a chicken, duck and goose sitting we have our first baby goose of 2024!
We have momma hatched and incubator hatched silkies! Loving the color variety this time around!
After 3 years and be tired of this plant that does nothing I’ve ripped it out and will expand my garden area! Still trying to figure out the layout of the planters and it’ll extend to the left when I have the energy again. Hoping to have it done so things can be planted before the baby comes.
Now to figure out how to bribe the boy to water and w**d the area for me 😅

Ladies doubled the previous month and beat out last February (thanks leap day 😅). I’ve started separating my frizzle Easter egger eggs and the for sure maran to Easter egger for olive laying chicks for a nice hatching bundle.
There’s always the pick and choose hatching egg cartons as well for a nice variety of colored off spring and egg colors.
Choose your own hatching eggs are 2️⃣0️⃣ a dozen but you get 6 bonus eggs each.
The frizzle easter eggs are 2️⃣5️⃣ a dozen (see second pic).
We got little moo cows.
These white ones are white leghorn mixes with either a white silkie roo, Easter egger, olive egger or a hen 2 leghorn mix boy.
I love leghorn mixes. They tend to have smaller combs which is great to reduce the chance of frostbite and tend to be heavier set than a normal leghorn hen, and aren’t as flighty. They still lay a large white egg.
The ones with the blackish legs and extra toe are from my white silkie rooster.
I also love the mixes because they all have a different amount of spots and in different places allowing you to tell them apart vs me having 9 leghorn hens that share the name Pearl or Sandy 😂
There’s also 5 little silkies that also hatched out with the batch.
The girls aren’t slacking that’s for sure. Todays hill minus the first two in the top left.
So question.
Is it goose teeth
Goose’s teeth
Goose tooth
Geese tooth
Or geese teeth.
Well I just knocked over my basket.
This is why you don’t put all your eggs in one basket 😅 luckily only 6 had cracks.
But when live gives you freshly cracked/dented eggs you make scrambled eggs for dinner.
First goose egg of the season!
Guess todays hull. It’s the biggest one in awhile. Might need a second basket or two trips if they keep this up.
Guess I’ll be bring my silkie chicks to the early swap.
THIS SATURDAY!!!! January 13th!!!!! Due to the low Temps expected on the 20th we are moving the Swap to this Saturday!!!!
When your asked to do a test hatch on maran eggs for a fellow farm Red Earth Farmstead and you’re not expecting the eggs to be this dark so late in the season! I can’t wait to hatch these bad boys out.
I know I plan to keep a few and a few might go back to their home but I should have a few to spare and like 60 silkies hatching out from my farm and All Star Yard Peckers on January 31st!
Please follow Red Earth Farmstead. They’ll be ramping up hatching over the next year and will have more availability in the future for the Marans.
Y’all like my new gargoyle?

Living in the country we get a few bugs in the barn every now and again. Luckily my exterminators work 24/7. #chicken #farmlife
Kids will be kids even if they’re feathered. Little duck wanted to get a head start on Halloween and was testing out her super duck cape. Powers are like Kirby, engages all food on site, squirtle water gun out the back side when startled, and ear piercing quakes to deafen enemies.
Little bee couldn’t fly earlier this week. Temps hit 95. A little sugar water and the bee perked right up #savethebees
Was struggling with my quail cage due to all this rain we’ve had. The bottom is either a muddy mess or rock hard like concrete. Decided to see if pine needles are safe for quail and they are! So I scooped up a bunch of small ones from under my trees and lined the bottom of the cage with it. I also learned the following. I might have to move their set up to under my pine trees permanently. Pines produce pine seeds, used by quail as fall food, and large quantities of pine needles, which serve as a fuel for prescribed burning.
Amber sexlinks, brown sexlinks, black sexlinks and Rhode Island Red pullets available. They’ll be a week old tomorrow.
