This is what livestock guardians are about. Thank you John Chester for sharing and for giving Pyrenees from Mistry Great Pyrenees not only a great home but also a job on Apricot Lane Farms.
Why dogs on our farm?
Written by John Chester Apricot Lane Farms....
It's about a compromise. Nature relies on balance but what does that really mean? On a regenerative farm like ours it's about finding a way to bring the agricultural challenges to a level of mental, physical and financial sustainability without negatively impacting our ecosystem.
So here was our problem. The Coyote, Mountain Lion and the Bobcat are the wild predators in California who pose a potential threat to the safety of our lambs. Naturally a farmer would not want these predators eating the livestock. So what were we to do?
These coyotes and the like are the very predators who also keep the crop destroying rabbit, gopher and ground squirrels in check and reduce their damage to our crops. They call these small animals like rabbits "pests", but are they, or do they serve a deeper level of mutualism required for a healthy land?
Keep in mind a "w**d' is only defined as a plant that is not valued where it is growing. Scientifically though many plants we consider "w**ds' are really plants trying to heal the soil from a deficiency. But as with w**ds all of these pest animals serve a deeper purpose to our fragile ecosystem. All of them including the coyote are pollinators of some sort and balancers of each others population. Since we don't kill the coyote here on Apricot Lane we need a way to manage the balance of our system, So we protect our flock using a non lethal deterrent. Our answer? Guardians. Since 2011 our flocks have been protected by the Great Pyrenese Mountain Dogs. 5 guardian dogs are with our sheep 24/7 rain or shine. Since it's not easy for the coyote to eat a lamb... he often times chooses a gopher. We have raised hundreds of sheep and since the dogs have been with us we have not lost one lamb to a predator. No words can sum up this relationship between dog and sheep better than this short film.
