How Often Should Dogs P**p?
You may not spend a lot of time thinking about your dog’s p**p—but from a medical point of view, it can provide some very valuable insight into their overall health.

Keeping tabs on what your dog’s stool looks like, how often they defecate, and what their particular habits are can clue you in very quickly to certain health concerns.

How Often Should a Dog P**p?
In general, how often dogs p**p depends on their life stage:

Most adult dogs p**p once a day on average, although for some dogs, two or three times per day is still considered normal.

Puppies, on the other hand, may need to go much more often—sometimes as much as five times a day or more.

Senior dogs may need to defecate less frequently, closer to the once a day or sometimes even less than that.

While your dog may have their own patterns, any change in consistency should get your attention.

If your dog is a consistent once-a-day p**per and suddenly starts p**ping three or four times a day, there’s a reason behind it. It could be as simple as a change in your dog’s diet or exercise schedule, but it could also be a sign of a health problem that needs to be addressed.

How Long After Eating Does a Dog P**p?
Most dogs will p**p about 30 minutes after eating, or immediately after waking up. These are both great times to plan walks or exercise for your dog. Of course, all dogs have different schedules, so you’ll learn what works best for your dog.

For most dogs, it takes between 8-12 hours for a meal to be fully digested, with puppies digesting food faster than older dogs. If your dog eats a smaller meal, they’ll digest it faster than a larger meal, also. So if you’re feeding your dog two meals a day, they are likely going to have to defecate about twice per day.

Why Is My Dog P**ping So Much?
If your dog is always a frequent p**per, going several times a day may just be normal. However, if they suddenly need to go more often, or it seems to be urgent when they need to go, there may be an underlying medical issue.

Why Is My Dog Not P**ping?
Just like p**ping too frequently, not p**ping often enough can be a sign of a health problem. If your dog skips a p**p but is not straining, it’s not as concerning. However, if your dog is regularly straining to p**p and not producing any stool, or the stool is firmer than normal, they may be constipated.

Constipation can be caused a number of issues, including dehydration. Check with your vet to see if there may be an underlying cause. Don’t try to treat the constipation by giving your dog any sort of laxative unless recommended by your veterinarian. Even dog-safe laxatives may have side effects like diarrhea.

When Should You Worry About Your Dog’s P**p Schedule?
An occasional extra p**p or missed p**p is normally nothing to worry about. Several factors influence your dog’s elimination habits, including their diet, how often they eat, getting extra snacks, raiding the trash, how much exercise they get, stress, and the household schedule.

Any change in the normal pattern that lasts for more than a day or so should be checked out. The same is true for the stool itself: any change in color, odor, or consistency may signal that something is going on.

When you are unsure if something is normal, keep careful notes (even keeping a diary might be helpful) and check in with your veterinarian.

How Often Should You Walk Your Dog?
Barring any medical reason, such as arthritis or mobility issues, it’s almost impossible to walk your dog too often. However, if you want to time walks or letting your dog out for when they are most likely to p**p, it should be at least twice per day, about 30 minutes after meals.

Afterward, it’s always a good idea to find and pick up the p**p. This will not only keep the yard or street clean, but it will also let you check for changes in smell, color, and consistency.

The most important thing is to know what’s normal for your dog, and then watch closely for any changes. If you do see changes, keep track of what you’re seeing and let your vet know what’s going on.

Pet waste left on the street or lawn does not just go away or fertilize the grass. Rain washes pet waste down storm drains and into waterways like rivers, bays, and beaches. This can make people sick from salmonella, E. coli, and other infections. Pet waste is very toxic—the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that waste produced by just 100 dogs in two or three days (or one weekend) can contain enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay to swimming and shellfishing. Pet waste also provides a nitrogen source for algae blooms, which deplete the water of oxygen and can make people and animals sick.

What You Should Do

Keep a supply of bags handy

When walking your pet, take a bag with you for quick waste pick-up. It helps to keep a supply of bags near your dog leash and to tie the bags on the leash if you don't have a pocket or pack. Consider re-using plastic newspaper bags or bread bags. Use the bag to pick up the waste, and tie it closed. When at home, long-handled p**per scoopers available at pet stores make it easy to pick up after pets without stooping over.

Dispose of pet waste properly

Place sealed bags of pet waste in the trash. It may help to double bag dog waste or kitty litter. Do not throw waste near or into storm drains, and do not dump kitty litter outside. Do not flush pet waste down your toilet.

Follow local rules and signs

State beaches do not allow dogs during the on-season from April 1 to September 30. MORE
Town beach rules may vary, but they are generally posted at the beach.
State parks and picnic areas require pet owners to clean up and properly dispose of animal waste. MORE
Some cities and towns have fines for not picking up waste on streets, in parks, or in dog parks.

Is Dog P**p Bad for Your Yard?
Your dog p**ps multiple times a day. As a responsible pet owner, you do your best to pick up the p**p immediately after he goes. But what about in your own backyard? Is picking up dog p**p just a courtesy for neighbors, or are there health risks for you or your pets if it’s left in the yard? Can dog p**p harm your grass or yard?

Picking up dog p**p helps to make your neighborhood, dog park, or backyard safer for everyone. It can eliminate the spread of parasites and diseases that can be potentially life-threatening to your pet or other pets.

Dog P**p Risks to People and Other Pets
Concerns about dog p**p disposal can be about inconvenience, such as becoming maggot-infested in warm weather or moldy in cool, damp weather. It is also unpleasant to step in. But there are even bigger potential risks when it comes to the potential for diseases and parasites.

Dog p**p can carry the parvovirus, which is a potentially deadly virus that is shed in f***s. Parvovirus attacks the intestinal cells, causing severe diarrhea, vomiting, and illness. We can vaccinate our pets for parvovirus, so it is important to keep your pet up to date on their vaccines.

Dogs acquire parvovirus via a f***l-oral route, meaning they ingest f***s or something that has been contaminated with f***s from another dog with parvovirus. Parvovirus can live in the environment for a long time, so it is important to monitor your dog in dog parks or on walks and pick up after your own pet. Don't let your pet sniff or, worse, eat f***s.

Dogs who have other parasites—intestinal worms or protozoal infections—can also spread diseases in f***l material.

In fact, everything from hookworms to whipworms, roundworms to giardiasis in dogs, may be hiding out in a dog’s droppings. These types of organisms can affect other pets in your home and may even be able to be transmitted to the humans in the house as well.

If contaminated stools are left on the ground for a significant amount of time, a pet can easily become re-exposed to an infection or worms.

Can Dog P**p Be Used as Fertilizer?
Despite popular belief, experts note that not all stools are created equal. Cow manure makes a much better fertilizer because of their vegetarian diet. Carnivorous, or omnivorous animals, such as dogs, typically eat feed higher in protein, which makes f***s more acidic. This acidic fertilizer does not meet the needs of plants. Combined with the dangers posed to humans and pets, using dog p**p as fertilizer is not a worthy endeavor.

It is possible to heat dog f***s to kill lingering pathogens in order to compost it, but it is still not an ideal substance to add to soil—especially of anything potentially consumed by humans or pets.

Proper Disposal Is Key
When it comes to picking up dog p**p, the bottom line, according to Dr. Kremer, is that quick, efficient disposal is key. The sooner the f***s is removed, the less chance it has to infect other humans or pets.

When picking up dog p**p, humans should take extra precautions so as not to come into contact with the f***s directly. You can wear gloves when you pick up dog p**p or use a p**per scooper, such as the Arm & Hammer Swivel Bin & Rake backyard waste pickup or the Nature’s Miracle Jaw dog p**per scooper. Always wash your hands after retrieving f***s.

Once you remove p**p from your yard, you’ll want to deposit it into a sealed bag.

In addition to harboring bacteria, dog p**p can also leave a lingering odor. In order to combat that, you can use a product like NaturVet Yard odor eliminator, which is a nontoxic formula that is infused with natural microorganisms that work to break down and neutralize pet odors.

Additional Safety Tips for Dog Owners
Make sure that your pet is up-to-date on his vaccinations. Parvovirus is a preventable disease that has an effective vaccine. Make sure you work with your veterinarian to keep your pet up to date on all their vaccinations.

Watch for signs that your pet may have parasites, such as diarrhea or vomiting, and routinely test your pets for parasites. Most vets recommend testing your pets f***s every 6-12 months. Frequent testing decreases the likelihood of severe disease and spread to other family members.

There are heartworm preventatives on the market which also deworm dogs when they are given once a month, such as Interceptor Plus for hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms and roundworms. There are many terrific products on the market, so make sure you talk to your vet about which is best for your dog!
