Just a reminder starting today Dr Silverman will no longer be taking after hours or weekend calls. If you have not reached out to your new vet clinic and established a relationship with them please be sure to do that as soon as posable. Dr Silverman is still booking appointments during the day for the rest of July and the office is open if you need to pick up anything.

The Spooky Fire Season is upon us-
An Equine Fire Safety Awareness meeting will be held at Osuna Ranch, 16332 Via De Santa Fe, on Thursday September 21, 2023 at 4:00 pm. Attend this special Osuna Talks event to learn from the Humane Society and Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District about horse evacuation in the event of a fire.
Dr Silverman will be attending this conference next week and will be out of the office 8/30 - 9/4 - the office will have 24/7 on call coverage should an emergency come up.

COOL SCIENCE (pun intended)!
An old myth wants us to believe that horses should be walked until they cool completely after exercise, even in the summer. However, a study from 2020 looked at five different ways to cool a horse after exercise: walking, walking with fans, walking with intermittent cold water application, walking with intermittent cold water application and scraping, and stationary with continuous tap water application. As it turns out, the method that resulted in the quickest return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application (2 minutes), while walking alone took the longest time for recovery (25 minutes).
Bottom line: enjoy your rides in the sun this summer but remain vigilant for signs of heat stress in your horse. If they look tired, it’s time for a drink, a cool bath, and a break in the shade.

- USEF Licensed Competitions will require all horses entering from a USDA Confirmed VS Affected State to be accompanied by an official state issued or approved certificate of veterinarian inspection (CVI) ( Health Certificate) which includes a VS statement issued within 5 days of entry to the competition grounds. Only an official state issued/approved certificate of veterinary inspection document will be accepted. Inspections on Veterinary Letterhead WILL NOT be accepted.
