Greyhound options when thinking adoptions.

Greyhounds Make Great Pets is pleased to announce a very special keynote speaker at Hounds of The World 2023. We will be welcoming Derarca O’Mahony, Vice President of Racing 2 Rehome Inc., a not-for-profit volunteer-based greyhound rehoming (adoption) group in Australia. In addition to her presentation, Derarca will also be available for limited one~on~ones with US not-for-profit 501c3 adoption group leaders to discuss availability and transport of Australian retired racers to the Southwest and Western states.

Following is Derarca O’Mahony's bio ~
As an animal lover, and after many years owning pedigree dogs, Derarca wanted to focus her efforts on those dogs most in need of rehoming. Having owned dogs that ran off-leash every day, she was unsure of how she would cope with an on-leash only breed. So, she fostered her first greyhound as a trial. A big, black boy bounced into her life and within a few hours she was totally besotted and naturally foster-failed! And it goes without saying, it's these big black boys that are still her firm favorites!

That was 15 years ago. Since then, Derarca’s passion and compassion for the greyhound breed has continued to grow. This has led her to foster over 70 greyhounds, with a penchant for the more difficult dogs with behavioral issues. Over this time, she has also held key volunteer roles within Australian rehoming groups, promoting greyhounds as pets and finding them new homes.

Today, Derarca is the Vice President of Racing 2 Rehome Inc – a not-for-profit volunteer-based greyhound rehoming group, and the trailblazers bringing Australian Greyhounds to USA families. In 2019, President of Racing 2 Rehome, Rebecca Miller on a visit to the USA, identified the shortage of available greyhounds for rehoming and saw this opportunity to address the low rehoming rate of greyhounds within Australia. It was from this idea that the USA Flight program was born, in partnership with two USA rehoming groups. With four flights between November 2019, and February 2020, and a hiatus due to COVID, the program was restarted in June 2022 with an expanded number of USA rehoming group partners and additional support from the Australian Greyhound Racing industry. Racing 2 Rehome have now achieved over 24 successful flights to America. Working alongside a dedicated team, Derarca is instrumental in the continuation of this highly successful program.

End of an awesome project. It is time.
The kennel facility will be gone. Once sold, any remaining funds will be donated to 501c3 organizations who retire greyhounds and help place any PRH rehomes.

Adoption process update - We are not accepting new applications at this time. We are prioritizing appointments we have had to reschedule due to lack of suitable dogs available at the time.
Our hope is to open the applications mid year but that is merely a guess at this time.

Please understand we are trying to get everyone in however over the past 5 years breedings have cut back.
What does this mean for the future of NGA greyhounds? Well that IS the million dollar question we are all wondering.
There are not enough dogs for the remaining tracks - we hear. There are not enough pets (aka dogs retiring for means of adoption) - we hear this too.
So which is it?
Well both, as they go hand in hand! Without breeding and pups born, there are not enough dogs period! No matter how you look at it, when the number of NGA pups born is low, so be the amount of dogs racing and available for adoption.
We saw this coming in 2017 when the number of pups born that year barely made 7500 if that. Fast forward to 16-18 months and you will see those pups headed to tracks. Fast forward just 11 months in to 2018 and you will see Florida deciding to end greyhound racing ( December 2020 ) in the state of Florida, USA.
Some were elated about the vote however MANY of us, PRH included, WE were not.
With so few breedings and pups born, we were already short the demand for adoption dogs.
Does this mean you are staring at your last NGA greyhound? Maybe. Only time will tell.

Good Morning everyone!
It’s . The one day each year we feel good donating to wonderful non profits. This year more than ever PRH needs your support. With dog racing ending in the warm state of Florida, and the influx of dogs from these actions. Contributions will help us get over this hurdle.
With so many events cancelled this year and limited walk in customers, our overnight greyhounds have been sparse due to the lack of travel.
Non-Profits are extremely important. To date PRH has adopted well over 2,000 dogs, and continues to adopt every day. Our mission is to put the right dog in the right home, and promote the breed.
Starting today through 11:59 PM tonight Facebook is matching $7Million dollars. $1.00-$1.00 match.
Chip in a few bucks if you can. Facebook is matching every dollar today.

Adoption update - We just posted pictures of a number of new dogs. This does not mean we are accepting new applications at this time. We are prioritizing appointments that we have had to reschedule because we did not have suitable dogs for those adopters at the time of their appointment. Hello fellow greyhound lovers! Time to post an update as we move forward during his glorious year!
We are still not accepting new applications. If you have adopted through PRH or another organization please email us.

The end of the year will bring the closing of the last 3 remaining tracks in Florida. We anticipate we will have more dogs as we are set up to house at least 70 hounds.
As we continue with dogs currently in our care, we are hopeful we can open the applications again mid to late fall.
We wanted to update the many people who have inquired about the hounds.
