You, my friends, and the knowing, how much you care about your dogs, how much they mean to you and how lucky they are to have you make me feel so grateful and happy.
Let's make 2023 the best year ever!
In order for us to get there, I have prepared a little list of 18 tips to make 2023 the healthiest year ever! This time for you, my human friends.
Why? Because when we are healthier and happier, our dogs feel happy and healthy too!
✅ 🛌 Get at least 7 hours of sleep a day, and go to bed early. I can't emphasize enough how important it is. Get a sleep app on your phone, watch or an Oura ring to get an idea of how much sleep you get.
✅ Prioritize the time spent with your family, humans and your four-legged friends.
✅ ❤️🔥 If you already do not have a job you love and are passionate about, make a plan to get there. Remember, setting a goal is less effective than making a step-by-step plan with dates. Make sure that whatever you're working on is aligned with your beliefs and values. An example would be a person believing in holistic and drug-free medicine and working as a big pharma drug rep.
✅ 🚴♀️ Stay active and be consistent, schedule a variety of different activities and make a plan a day before. Dog walking is great, but not enough for us humans to stay fit and strong in a balanced way. A combination of strengthening, stretching, and cardio is the key. I use the Tonal fitness wall to stay strong, use YouTube video classes by Cat De Rham, swim at least three times a week, and when I want to mix it up, I bike, ski or kiteboard. You have many options; make sure your activities are VARIED and REGULAR.
✅ 🍎 FOOD IS A BIGGIE! Be mindful of what you eat; remember that it is practically impossible to shed the extra calories we consume by exercise. This is one of the most common misconceptions out there. The only way to maintain a healthy body weight is to eat no more than our body requires. Eat less of the right food and allow yourself one day a week when you eat anything you like. Schedule a pig-out day! It works much better than pigging out every day.
✅ What truly helps is to reduce the amount of calorie-rich processed foods and stay away from the center isles of the grocery store. Most of my diet is plant-based, with the odd egg, parmesan or feta cheese for flavour. I rarely eat chunks of cheese, knowing that most contain 30 or more percent of fat.
✅ Avoid processed meats as they are a contributing factor of colon cancer. If you eat any meat, reduce the amount and frequency. It is no longer true that chicken is lean. Breeding has led to an elevation of fat content.
✅ 🐂 Milk and milk products are complicated because they are often high in fat, especially cheese, sugar and starch in yogurts. Milk also forms mucus, and an excessive amount in the diet taxes the immune system. There are no mammals in nature that would consume milk post-weaning, which is clear proof that milk is not really appropriate for adults of any species.
Plus, most people aren't aware that milk products are produced by taking calves away from their mothers in the early days and locking them up in "orphan" pens. I make my coconut yogurt in an Instant Pot. Beware of plant-based yogurt that contains starches to make them thick.
✅ Instead of going on about food, I highly recommend a book by Dr. Michael Greger - How Not to Diet. It is a Gem! Another book I love is Healing with whole Foods by Paul Pitchford.
✅ 🚜 You may already be aware that no matter how healthy and organic foods are, soil overuse has led to nutrient depletion. If you have ever grown vegetables, you know how much difference it makes to give them the right natural nutrients. Natural Human Supplements are "human natural fertilizers."
