November is Pet Diabetes Month. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), early signs of diabetes are important to note and may include:
Excessive water drinking/increased urination
Weight loss (even without a decreased appetite)
Decreased appetite
Cloudy eyes (most common in dogs)
Chronic infections, such as skin or urinary infections
The Canadian Animal Health Institute also notes that “walking or standing in a plantigrade posture (‘down in the hocks’)” is another clinical sign seen in diabetic cats.
If you observe these signs in your pets, you should contact your veterinarian right away. If I notice any of these signs while pet sitting, I will notify my clients as well.
If you have a diabetic pet that requires pet-sitting, please contact me. I am adept at administering medications, including insulin injections.
