Sad day. Unfortunately, little weezy didn't make it through the night. Even though it was under a heat lamp, I think my house got a little too cold for the lamp to keep up. I'm sorry I failed you, ugly little squab.

My husband had this bright idea of bringing home pigeon eggs for me to hatch for him.... Not a fancy pigeon or pet type or anything no..... a trash chicken! Meet his new ugly little squab "Weezy" that hatched this morning. I have ZERO clues as to what to do with a baby pigeon πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈ but at least I fed it and it ate a little..... guess I need to set up a makeshift brooder and figure this out πŸ™„

With the shortened daylight hours and also being molt season, it is NORMAL for egg production to slack off or stop completely.

There are ways to combat this:
-Feed high protein in the source of upped protein in feed, black oil sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, mealworms.... and believe it or not Kitten food!
-Extra vitamins such as rooster booster is also great to add to their water or sprinkle on their food a few times a week.
-Add supplemental lighting to their coop. A simple LED solar light that turns on at dusk will suffice. Poultry require 12-16 hours of light for good egg production.

But something to think about also.... Hens are born with X amount of eggs they will lay in their lifetime already in their bodies. The more you speed up their laying the likelihood of them not laying regularly into old age (we all know eggs decrease with age) greatly increases. Give them girls a break! How would you feel if you kept popping babies out and when nature says "YOU NEED A REST" Someone forces you to keep popping them out πŸ˜‚πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Sorry, best reference my sleepy mind could come up with 😁 Sometimes your ladies need a break, let them have the break that nature predicts that their bodies need πŸ’—

***Copied*** But this is sound advice as winterization efforts here in the south will be starting soon. Even though we rarely get temps that should cause concern. The best winterization effort to make to your coop and run is a simple wind block.

My take on heated coops:
Humans go into heated homes and take off jackets, boots, hats and gloves.
Animals live outside in the cold and do not suit up to go outside, they fluff up in preparation for winter temps based on your location.
So when they go into their shelter they are simply seeking a dry, draft free place to sleep eat and drink.
Putting a heater in there will cause a higher risk of shock because they enter the shelter with their winter fluff layer unable to undress.
Heated coops also create higher build up of moisture and risk of frost bite/other issues.
If you're concerned about keeping your chickens warm don't be, they are made for outdoors. Well most breeds.
They need a dry shelter more than they need a warm one.
Give them some scratch with dried cracked/whole corn because it's hard to digest and their bodies generate heat to digest it. I also added ginger, red pepper flakes, or cinnamon to their scratch to warm them up.

Due to the constant predator (mainly stray cat) issues, I will unfortunately not be breeding any poultry for a while. I have been trapping and relocating since this years over taking, as I have to do pretty much every year. However, it hasn't been enough. I have lost ALL 42 of my personal grow-outs (project blue buff brahmas, show quality blue and black amerucanas, silver leghorns, large fowl cochin, solid blue french marans) my beautiful painted chocolate turkey poults 😭😭😭 They are even attacking and killing my full grown breeders now! They have destroyed my grow out pen, they have made their sneaky way into my main coop, they have gotten into my brahma pen, swiped all of my beautiful, fancy quail, even suspectedly killed my solid white female Sebastopol gosling in daylight hours! Please, for the love of God, if you live in a neighborhood or have any close neighbors, keep your cats inside! Stray cats are NOT pets, they are a nuisance! Spay and Neuter! I wish I could tell the person that claims these cats as pets to pay me my lost money and lost income 🀬 but even if she did have the money I doubt she would accept the blame. I too shall mention that I had to get rid of my remaining TAMUKs not only due to the cats but a make shift construction crew she hired was messing with them when they were tearing down a structure behind my rabbit pen. It was the most God awful screams I heard from 2 of my babies and when I ran outside to see what was going on, 2 of the guys were quickly walking away from my fence behind my rabbit pen. And the 2 rabbits were dead. WTF they did to them idk but they definitely acted guilty as hell.

Hurricane Prep tips:
If you have an elevated coop, light weight coop or coop that has a tin roof, throw a strap or 2 over it and secure using t-posts or fence posts.

Fill your feeders and waterers, make sure they are in an area where they cannot be taken by the wind and will be protected from the rain.

Leave your coop door open. In the case that your coop gets tipped or a tree branch falls, your poultry need a way to escape if danger strikes.

Secure anything that might be taken by wind, BBQ pits, trampolines, trash cans, etc.
If you have a light weight shed or greenhouse (usually made of aluminum or sheet metal), throw a strap or 2 over it and secure it using t-posts or fence posts or even a near by tree.

If you have any young trees, use t-posts and rope to brace them. Not tight because you want the to be able to bend with the wind but not too far so that they will uproot or break.

Don't stress, we are Louisiana Strong
