“Alfalfa: The Leafy Green Superfood for Your Horse”

Alfalfa can be a fantastic addition to your horse’s diet when used appropriately. Packed with protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients, this leafy legume has earned its place as a dietary staple for many equines. But when should you feed alfalfa, and how much is just right? Let’s dig in!

Benefits of Alfalfa
1. High in Protein: Alfalfa is an excellent source of protein, which supports muscle development, recovery, and maintenance—especially important for performance horses.
2. Rich in Calcium: Calcium aids in bone health and muscle function. This is especially beneficial for growing horses, lactating mares, and seniors.
3. Energy Dense: Alfalfa provides more calories than grass hay, making it great for hard keepers or horses needing to maintain or gain weight.
4. Buffer for Stomach Health: Its high calcium content helps buffer stomach acid, making it a great choice for horses prone to ulcers.

When Is Alfalfa Appropriate?
• Performance Horses: Horses in training or competition benefit from the added protein and calories to fuel their workload.
• Lactating Mares and Growing Foals: The nutritional demands of growth and milk production make alfalfa a good fit.
• Underweight Horses: Alfalfa’s caloric density helps put weight on horses in need.
• Horses Prone to Ulcers: Feeding small amounts of alfalfa can reduce ulcer risk by neutralizing stomach acid.

When to Use Caution
• Easy Keepers: Horses prone to weight gain or those on restricted diets may not need alfalfa’s calorie punch.
• Horses with Metabolic Issues: Due to its higher sugar and starch levels compared to some grass hays, alfalfa may not be suitable for horses with conditions like insulin resistance or laminitis.
• Imbalanced Diets: Because of its high calcium content, balance alfalfa with a phosphorus-rich feed or supplement to maintain proper mineral ratios.

How Much Alfalfa Should You Feed?
• Alfalfa should generally make up no more than 50% of your horse’s forage intake.
• For a 1,000-pound horse, this translates to 10–15 pounds of alfalfa per day (depending on workload and dietary needs).
• Mix with grass hay for a balanced fiber and nutrient profile.

Feeding Tips
• Introduce alfalfa gradually to prevent digestive upset.
• Use hay nets or slow feeders to extend feeding time.
• Always ensure your horse has access to clean water, as alfalfa can increase thirst.

“You Can Lead a Horse to Water… But Can You Keep It Unfrozen?”

Keeping your horse hydrated during the cold months is just as important as in the heat of summer. Dehydration in winter can lead to serious issues like impaction colic, so here are a few tips to ensure your horse stays happy and hydrated:

1. Keep Their Water Unfrozen
Horses are less likely to drink if their water is icy or too cold. Use heated buckets or tank de-icers to keep the water at an inviting temperature. Regularly check the water source to ensure the heater is functioning and that there are no electrical issues that could deter your horse from drinking.

2. Add a Little Flavor
If your horse is picky, try adding a splash of apple juice or a handful of electrolyte powder to encourage drinking. Warm water is especially appealing, so offering it during feeding times can boost intake.

3. Mineral Blocks Are a Must
Salt and mineral blocks not only provide essential nutrients but also encourage your horse to drink more. Place them near the water source for convenience and to maximize their effectiveness.

4. Check for Ice in Their Diet
If you feed soaked hay cubes, beet pulp, or bran mashes in winter, ensure these feeds are warm and ice-free. Providing warm, wet feed can help supplement your horse’s water intake.

5. Monitor Intake
Track how much your horse is drinking each day. A healthy horse typically drinks 5–10 gallons of water daily, even in winter. Sudden decreases in drinking may signal an issue that needs attention.

By taking a few simple steps, you can lead your horse to water and help them stay hydrated through the chilliest months. After all, a happy, hydrated horse is a healthy horse!
