Feed mushrooms to your dog? πŸ€” Absolutely! And here's why. Medicinal mushrooms have amazing healing properties and benefits for overall health and longevity for both dogs and humans. More specifically, mushrooms:

πŸ‘‰ Prevent and fight cancer
πŸ‘‰ Contain the highest dietary source of glutathione (antioxidant that fights cancer)
πŸ‘‰ Are loaded with prebiotic fiber that feeds good bacteria in the gut
πŸ‘‰ Boost the immune system
πŸ‘‰ Reduce inflammation

Medicinal mushrooms for overall health include shiitake, porcini, maitake (contains the most glutathione), white button, oyster, reishi, Cordyseps, and king. For cancer prevention and treatment, feed turkey tail and/or Chaga. For extra nervous system support and cognitive function, feed Lion's Mane. For a super healthy dog, rotate through all of them regularly. Mushrooms can be fed raw, cooked, dehydrated, or in supplement form - however you can get your dog to eat them! πŸΎπŸ’š

**FYI - NEVER feed an unknown mushroom to your dog! A mushroom that's poisonous to you will also poison your dog !**

Rainy days are perfect for making bone broth for your pups! 🐾 Bone broth is a natural source of glucosamine that helps protect the joints and is great for inflammation. For dogs with shellfish allergies, as most glucosamine is derived from shellfish, bone broth is a fantastic way to add glucosamine to their diet. It’s also very soothing to the gut and can help dogs heal from surgery or illness. I like to add fresh ginger and turmeric root for more anti-inflammatory power! πŸ’ͺ🏻

Bone broth can be added to any food or served by itself at room temperature or slightly warm. If you don’t make it yourself, make sure you purchase one made specifically for dogs. Human bone broth often contains too much sodium and sometimes onions, which are toxic to dogs.

Some very important news from an extremely knowledgeable veterinarian! I highly recommend reading! Thank you, Dr. Judy, for getting the word out about this. πŸ™πŸ‘

Since 2007, The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has allowed ANY level of copper in dog food above 1.83mg/1000 kcal.

Two scientific papers (one in 2019 and one in 2021) documented an increase in Copper Storage Disease in Dogs, pointing to no maximum copper limit in dog food as a probable cause.

Our friend Dr. Laurie Coger of is investigating this issue. If your dog was diagnosed with Copper Storage Disease, please fill out this survey: https://form.jotform.com/221414914757054

Blueberries are a powerful superfood that are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants combat free radicals, which cause oxidative stress to your dog's cells and DNA. Oxidative stress is the primary cause of aging and degenerative diseases, including cancer, kidney disease, and arthritis. And guess what? The ONLY way to protect your dog from free radicals is through diet! Dogs' immune systems are not capable of fighting free radicals. So adding blueberries to your dog's food can prevent cell damage that leads to faster aging and chronic disease & help them live longer!

Blueberries also have a special antioxidant called anthocyanin, which helps protect the brain and nervous system. Blueberries contain more anthocyanin than any other food. They also have a good amount of prebiotic fiber that feeds the good bacteria in the gut. The more good bacteria in the gut, the stronger the immune system. So these delicious little berries are a win-win for your dog's overall health & longevity!

You can give blueberries as treats or add a few to their meals. The most you should feed is 5 blueberries per 10 pounds of body weight per day. So if you have a 50-pound dog, for example, you can give them up to 25 blueberries a day. As with any new food added to your dog's diet, start slowly. Just a few frozen blueberries as a treat on a hot summer day is a great place to start! πŸ˜„πŸΎ

This is a gently-cooked diet for Bart, a 14 year-old dog with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) & arthritis. Bart’s diet consists of:

πŸ‘‰ 93% lean ground turkey
πŸ‘‰ organic chicken livers
πŸ‘‰ pastured chicken eggs
πŸ‘‰ butternut squash
πŸ‘‰ fresh ginger
πŸ‘‰ barley
πŸ‘‰ broccoli
πŸ‘‰ kale
πŸ‘‰ spinach
πŸ‘‰ red bell peppers
πŸ‘‰ summer squash
πŸ‘‰ asparagus
πŸ‘‰ wild Maine blueberries
πŸ‘‰ kelp powder for iodine
πŸ‘‰ Rx Canine Minerals for calcium & trace minerals

Bart cannot tolerate some foods, like shellfish, salmon, & fats, that balance out the diet with whole foods, so supplements need to be added. This is very common for dogs with IBD, other GI issues, & allergies - which is why custom diets are so beneficial.

Supplements added to Bart’s bowl to make it a complete diet are:

πŸ’Š Vitamin D
πŸ’Š Vitamin B-12 (it’s very common for dogs with IBD to be deficient in B-12)
πŸ’Š Vitamin E
πŸ’Š Zinc
πŸ’Š Manganese
πŸ™ Calamari oil (Omega-3s) - the only Omega-3 supplement that works for him πŸ™

What’s in your dog’s bowl? πŸ₯•πŸ₯šπŸ₯¦πŸ‰πŸ₯©

The dog days of summer are here already in Maine - at least for a few days! 🐾🌞 May is the perfect time to start adding some cooling foods to your dog’s diet to help them tolerate the summer heat, especially our older dogs. Some great cooling treats and food toppers include apple bites, broccoli, asparagus, melons (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon), cucumbers, & hard-boiled duck eggs. Chicken egg whites will also do. πŸ˜‰ (Note: Vegetables should be cooked or finely chopped for proper absorption.)
