As we think about play with our dog, fetch is a very fun way to engage with your dog in a memorable way. ❤️ No matter how old they are you can teach a dog fetch if they are motivated to play. Fetch can be done with any object, not just a ball.🪢🥏
☝️) Start with short distances by tossing the object a couple feet away from you. If needed put the object on a rope or attached to a dog leash so you can softly reel the dog back in to help them understand the pattern to the game.🎣
✌️) Focus on celebrating the return of the object as your first priority. Creating this strong memory is key to a successful return of the object. Don’t worry if the dog doesn’t drop the object in this beginning phase. Want them to remember how amazing it is to come back to you.🥳

Simple Steps to Recall 👂🏼🐶Senbei is really slowing down 🐢 his busy mind and able to make great choices! Working up to this higher distraction environment has taken a couple weeks, and now he is able to disconnect from the simple outdoor environment AND have a stellar recall. 🌟 We can’t wait to watch him continue to build on this foundation. 😁Here are the steps we use to create this type of reliable recall:1️⃣) start in a controlled, indoor environment2️⃣) work on the dog touching your hand from only 1-2’ away3️⃣) BIG celebration with several pieces of food and praise to create a strong positive memory associated with the behavior of coming into the handler4️⃣) once the behavior is reliable and dog consistently comes in to touch your hand, add distance between the dog and you, and a command word. He’s gone from a hyperactive pup to a calmer dog in less than 20 days! 🤯Dunkin is enrolled in our 20-day Day Training program. Jet’s recall is on point!! 💯 We are thrilled with his progress. 3 simple steps to building your dog’s recall reliability:• Start in a low distraction, indoor environment. Add stimulation as your dog has an overwhelming level of success with current distractions.• With just a few inches between you and the dog, say the command, hold your hand out and have them touch your hand to build an understanding of how rewarding the simple motion of coming into you can be. Add distance between you and dog over time.• Major celebration should occur ever time the dog comes into you, even at short distances. Create a strong memory associated with the command word. This celebration should include multiple pieces of high-value food and lots of affection for several seconds. Here is the pattern we are looking to build:• Command word• Dog flips their head to find you• Dog returns to you • Big celebration Keys to success:• Do your training sessions when your dog is fairly hungry, but not starving. • Keep the environment simple and build slowly maintaining a minimum of 99% success rate! This is critical!! Too many mistakes of the pattern and your dog will be building a different pattern that you don’t want.• Only do 4-5 repetitions in a training session. Keep it short, memorable and fun, then be done! • Only do 1-2 recall training sessions a day.Have more questions? Tracie rescued 🐶 Max and 🐕🦺 Jack from backyard breeders who were struggling to find homes from their accidental litter of puppies. 🐾 The goal was to ensure they were given the best chance to achieve their full potential. Each dog has had ❕extensive training and have a ❕solid foundation for their new family to build on.🐶 MAX 🐾Eight month-old Sheepadoodle. He is cautiously optimistic in new environments and when meeting new people. His confidence has grown immensely. 😄💛 Extremely sweet, loving and looking for a family to snuggle into their hearts.💛 Does well in a kennel💛 Settles fairly quickly indoors and will hang out with his humans or enjoy chewing toys and bones💛 Solid potty training routine with elevated success in alerting to go outside💛 Leash skills are good, but will need on-going development. He needs some attention during long distance walks, but is still enjoyable to share a walk to the park or around the block.💛 Recall is on point even in busy environments. He's not a runner and will stay close. 💛 Extremely social with other dogs. Can be a little rowdy in his play so still needs development.‼️ Best environment would be an adult-only household or one with older children. Max is still a busy puppy and could be overly excited around small, energetic children.
