We finished building the food waste drop-off shed and got all of our paperwork submitted to the city for a permit to place the shed at the LEAP Hub on Patterson Ave SW. we should have it in place during the second or third week in January. Big thanks to Spencer Doran who taught me some carpentry skills while splitting an 8’x8’ shed into two 3 1/2’ x 8’ sheds.
We’ll be working with local artist Heather Lynn Reynolds to paint a garden goddess on the shed in honor of all the garden goddesses at Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP.
The rain garden earthworks is coming together nicely! There is still fine tuning for the berm level, planting, mulching, and evening out the garden soil media to complete. But im happy with where it is now.
Yesterday we laid the final block (out of 140) to build the massive bunkers for the aerated static pile compost bunkers for Star City Compost. I am proud to say that these bunkers will far outlast our lifetimes. We built something that is as solid as Stonehenge.
Given the nature that life will always need quality soil, I believe this will be used through boom and busts of our national economy to support locally grown food.
There have been many trials which had to be traversed to complete this feat. The most difficult being having to shave off between 1 inch and 14 inches from 6 blocks to make our bunkers fit together snug.
This is our biggest infrastructure step, but there are still many tasks to complete before we are done with the facility and before we open. We are on track to opening in October.
