We finished building the food waste drop-off shed and got all of our paperwork submitted to the city for a permit to place the shed at the LEAP Hub on Patterson Ave SW. we should have it in place during the second or third week in January. Big thanks to Spencer Doran who taught me some carpentry skills while splitting an 8’x8’ shed into two 3 1/2’ x 8’ sheds.

We’ll be working with local artist Heather Lynn Reynolds to paint a garden goddess on the shed in honor of all the garden goddesses at Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP.

It was 2018 when I first imagined a compost facility at Heritage Point Farm. We’re making good progress on the compost drop off sheds. We took an old abandoned garden shed and split in half to get two sheds. These will be used for housing two 64 G totes thst customers can dump all their food waste in on a weekly basis. Then we’ll collect the contents and bring it back to the facility.

Today marks the closing of a chapter in the story of building Star City Compost - Roanoke City’s first compost facility. We completed the construction of the doors on the aerated static pile bunkers yesterday and the today an engineer came out to review our facility to be sure it met the design regulations. He’ll be sending his positive endorsement of our facility to DEQ by the end of the week.

Last week, we got a loan and support from one of our owners to establish a trust that can fund the theoretical closure of the facility - which is another requirement for our permit.

We should be opened by the end of the year. I’ve been hesitant to fully commit to customers until this point. Now it is time to start building up our base for composting our waste. Which is exciting and a very clear pivot point in my daily focus.

Pictured here is me with Craig Coker - a co-owner is SCC, a 40 year composting industry veteran, and the most important mentor I’ve needed in this endeavor. He’s a huge reason we’ve gotten to this point.

When I reflect on the improbability of this alignment with Craig, my comrades with the harvest collective, the support of my wife/family, the support of the Roanoke natural foods cooperative with reasonable rent that includes a tractor I realize this is all meant to be.

Our friendship has guided and supported the business foundation and building of . We’ve worked various gigs together and made enough money for our team to invest $17K into building our cities first compost facility. We collaborated with a team of law students from UVA to craft THC and SCC operating agreements. None of us have made any money yet off of this endeavor. What drives us is hope. In this world we can feel helpless to affect positive change in our ecosystems. it is our dedication to each other and our collective mission of community ecosystem abundance that gives us hope. This is worth more than all the money. Although I have long held a vision for the harvest collective, it is when we all came together that I felt supported in it and we hat we began to make a stronger impact. And look at those smiles you can tell we really like each other. Thank you Katie, Erin, Hunter, and Ron Tom. You are amazing people.

It’s nice to reflect back on all the incredible progress we’ve made in building our city’s first permitted compost facility. Using reclaimed deck wood and panels from a former hockey rink I built our first set of doors (4 out of 20 total) for the ASP bunkers. They’re solid and heavy.

I’m grateful that Michael Jacobs, W Hunter Hartley, and Katie Struble have come out a bunch in the past couple months to keep the project rolling. Good friends mean so much to this project.

I was hoping to open the facility next week. Unfortunately our tractor broke down with a major need for repair. So we are pushed back until the end of November or early December when we can open. I’m learning to trust the process and be patient. It’s been so long from idea inception to business opening that this all gonna be worth it.

I am grateful for this opportunity and I will continue to give it my all.

The cisterns on the deck are for catching the water that runs through the active composting piles. The drains on the bottom each bunker collect into the totes. The second set of cisterns is a rainwater catchment next to the bunkers to provide water for the compost during dry weather. Both were recently completed. We’re weeks away from completing the build out of the facility!!
