My favorite thing about training horses, especially young ones, is getting to experience their growing confidence as they learn their jobs. I took April XC schooling yesterday and she was so confident and game! We both had a blast!
Yesterday morning, April and I popped down to Chester County for a lesson with Jimmie Schramm- the goal of the morning was to improve the quality of April’s jumping and maintain straightness- I think we were successful! I am so thankful to have access to upper level professionals, like Jimmie- I find that having another set of eyes is imperative when bringing along young horses, especially when you usually ride on your own (like I do). I find it incredibly helpful to check-in as needed to make sure I’m not missing anything, as well as learn new ways to approach different issues.
April is pony ride approved! She took good care of her little passengers this morning 😍

Sneak peek from our XC schooling today! April was a super star! This pony is so much fun and such a reliable girl!
April has been wearing her fancy pants lately! She is just about ready to find her new 🏠- please reach out if you are interested in this super pony!
Miss “April” (Ballystanford April) had her VERY FIRST cross-country schooling this morning! I couldn’t be more pleased with this kind mare. She is finally feeling comfortable in her own body and RELAXING. The poor girl was wound so tight after the journey over from Ireland, (plus the quarantine purgatory!) and was a bit of a nervous Nellie. She has such a kind, quiet way about her. I was hoping she’d come around and be a lovely type- and she is doing just that! She was cool as a cucumber and popped over everything I pointed her at. When we first arrived this morning, I took her off the trailer and tied her to the side with her haynet. Moments later, a loose horse came tearing across the field at us, and she didn’t even tense up or spook! She just watched him gallop past, reins and stirrups flailing, and went back to her hay!! Go April! I think this girl is going to make an amazing steady-eddie packer with some more miles under her belt. (Also, is this humidity and heat getting to anyone else? I was MELTING under my vest and helmet this morning!!)
Since “April” arrived a few weeks ago, I’ve been gradually legging her up- she had significant time off due to flight delays and then the extended quarantine situation, so I’ve been careful not to push her. She is just so lovely! I’m very pleased with her progress. She’s still developing balance, but that will come as her strength returns. She is a very kind mare- she’s super tuned into her rider and the world around her. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying getting to know her. I feel like she really trusts me now and is trying her heart out to do the right thing! She’s a special girl! Here’s a clip from our dressage school this morning- she’s figuring out the magic of the half half in the canter! It’s apparent that someone started her very correctly- YAY!
Miss Ballynastanford April (aka April) is officially on her way to the States! She’s currently enjoying last dinner on Irish soil. Huge shoutout to EIS transport for taking such wonderful care of this mare so she arrives safely on US soil!
I think we can all agree that rideability is key when jumping horses. When “Allie” came a week and a half ago, she was definitely in the habit of “motorcycling” her turns and zooming around on her forehand. This past week, I’ve worked on developing better balance on the flat (getting her to start sitting back and carrying herself instead of racing on her forehand) and using gymnastics to encourage her think and use her body correctly. I wish I had some “before” footage so you could all appreciate the improvement! She is a super smart and becoming a really fun ride (we still have some sprucing up to do- pardon the long spot to the oxer haha)! What are some of your favorite rideability exercises?
Updated video of Owen’s talents 🤩
Hi Friends! Let’s talk about the tough task of keeping white Connie tails clean in the winter! Here’s how I do it- I’d love to hear your tips and tricks too!
There are so many things that I love about Connemaras- loads of athleticism packed into a smaller frame, their sweet, kind eyes, sturdy bodies and strong hooves…but do you know what might be my favorite thing about Connies? Their brains! There aren’t too many ponies or horses that you can take out on the first really windy, cold day of the season and have a relaxed, spook-free ride. “Owen” was really channeling his Connemara half this morning during our warm-up hack and dressage school this morning! What is your favorite Connemara pony quality?
P.S. If you are looking for a really level-headed boy that you can take out for a ride any day of the year and feel safe, send me a message. This Connemara/ISH gelding is available!
I love training young horses- it so rewarding to see them grow up and gain confidence. Owen is starting to look so grown up! You’ll see a little clip of Owen going off a bank into the water- this was the first day he saw this question- a little uncoordinated, but so honest! I feel a great responsibility in how I present new ideas to greenies to make sure it’s a positive experience and that I have a happy, game horse at the end of each ride. What’s your favorite part about riding young horses?
Owen is feeling like a million bucks thanks to the change in weather! The heat and humidity were a bit too much for this Irish lad. Super show jump lesson with Jimmie Schramm this morning! So proud of this baby horse!
I am so pleased with the improvement in Owen’s flatwork! He is really finding his balance and getting much more consistent in the bridle. He’s going to be a real catch for someone soon!
Meet “Hillowan Bob”- imported 4yo Connemara/Irish Sport Horse cross, currently standing 15hh. This sweet boy is delightful in every way! He’s proved himself to be rather unflappable- he didn’t even bat an eye when my crazy dog decided to chase him as he was jumping the oxer! This boy is 🦄 material and will be available soon!DM for more info.
