Let’s start LETTING them grow up instead of MAKING them grow up.
This can relate to lots of things including people but for this I am going to talk about horses.
We need to start letting them grow up before we are expecting them to do grown up things that neither their bodies nor minds are ready for.
I don’t mind starting a 3 yr old at all as long as they are physically and mentally ready.
I will turn down any horse for saddle or ridden training that is under age 3. It is not ethical for me to start them in ridden work. It will save that horse’s longevity if you wait a little longer to start them. The time you have to wait is beyond worth it to have them comfortable for much longer.
There are a lot of people still starting horses young even with all of the information on how bad it is for the horse and all of the health issues we are seeing. If you have to inject a young horse’s joints something is wrong. Sometimes it is something like starving at a young age before you got them. That’s understandable as you had no control over that but it is best if you are listening to the facts being shown and starting them in true work as a more mature horse. Don’t be afraid to inject or treat when your horse needs it! Just look at the reasons and carefully consider if something needs to change.
Cue my 5 yr old Arabian mare(pictured)that has never had anyone on her. She just recently got girthed up in a surcingle for the first time and has had a saddle on her back only a few times without a girth. We are focusing on correct movement and helping her body mature in a way that will allow her to be comfortable long term.
She is my own horse so I have plenty of time to slowly work with her and let her grow. She was starved at a young age(I got her just under a year ago) and is still VERY small for her age. She is growing with proper feed so we are just slowly letting her grow and mature as a horse before getting on her at all.
Usually I would start horses at 3 or 4 but Jasmine(Arab mare) is a very good example of how the age does not determine how mature their body is. I still fully believe that they can not be truly physically ready under age 3 but some do need more time and that is ok.
Trust you instincts! If you or one of your horses professionals thinks that your horse needs more time then take it. There is no shame in waiting until your horse is ready❤️
