Yesterday's success led to an outing with our two youngest, Bossi and Token, this morning. They are on a fast track to becoming our new A Team! A special thanks to shot hog Mike Postava, who brought down the four birds we took home.

Took some time off yesterday to vote and hunt. Tried and true Jazz (left, 8 yrs old), and her daughter NOLA didn't disappoint.

Token and Nola helped us get our limit. Not bad for Token's first real hunt. Also have to give credit to the retriever not pictured, Mike Postava for cornering and grabbing a runner. And he delivered to hand!

“Geneva” (Valhalla’s Smoke On The Water JH) 2/24/2010-10/4/2025

We had the privilege of sharing our lives with Geneva (or ‘Neevers, or ‘Neevies) longer than any other of our many companions so far. She was one soul who truly never had a bad day. If she was awake, that fat Labrador tail was probably wagging. It might also happen when she was sleeping too.
A beautiful girl, she never really made it as a show dog because of a slight underbite, but she made up for that with her hunting ability. For years she and her best buddy Mardi were Deb’s pheasant partners. She spent countless hours in the fields and woods chasing and retrieving those birds. It was her true love although breakfast and dinner were a close second. For those, Geneva acted as our built-in alarm clock. We just wish she wasn’t always 5 minutes early.
There is something very distinguished, maybe even noble about the graying of an old dog’s muzzle and paws. They are markings of experience and wisdom and she wore them with grace. Thankfully her body stayed strong and although her last few years consisted of a good amount of sleeping, she always picked a spot very nearby and checked in from time to time for her daily petting. And she could still work up a good trot on her way in from outside at dinnertime.
When her bright demeanor turned, we knew it was time to say goodbye to her in the same dignified way she had always lived. She’s now reunited with her hunting buddy Mardi who we lost earlier this year. Those pheasants better look out.

“Mardi” – GCH CH Valhalla’s Mardi Gras JH - 03/05/2012 - 07/08/2025
It’s taken over a week to be able to put into words all of our feelings and memories of Mardi. But even now, words will fall short.
Mardi was a beautiful Labrador. She started her show career off big with a major from the 6-9 Puppy class. She finished her Championship at 21 months and a year later was a Grand Champion. She passed down her beautiful head, expression and movement to her puppies. We are fortunate to be able to look around the room and still see her in her offspring. She was a fabulous mother, blessing us with three litters.
Most of all Mardi was a great Retriever. Being a mother might have been her second love; hunting was her passion. We spent countless hours following her through fields and cover, chasing pheasants. One particular retrieve will always be in our memories. A bird flushed unexpectedly, but I was able to hit it as it crossed a path and sailed into a valley. It was only winged, so when it went down it ran…and swam. Who’d have known they could swim like that. Mardi followed the bird into the valley and disappeared. We didn’t realize the valley ended in a swampy pond; but we heard splashing. After about 5 minutes we decided to make our way down the steep walls to gather our dog. About then, Mardi appeared about 80 yards away, soaking wet, pheasant in her mouth…still kicking.
Mardi was member of the “A-team” of hunting dogs until she tore a knee in the field. After surgery and rehab, we decided she shouldn’t hunt anymore. That was a hard decision. We’re grateful she passed along her ability, nose and desire to many of her kids and grandkids who we have the honor of hunting with today.
Rest well beautiful girl; thank you for sharing your life with us.
