Some people call it “the zoomies,” but there’s some science behind it.

Adopted: Meet Bear! Bear is an 11 week old, tricolor, Australian shepherd with a docked tail. Bear hails from a farm in WI. His birthday is May 21, 2023. He is up to date on his vaccinations and is microchipped.

Bear is shy at first, but with patience, treats and toys, he will quickly come out of his shell. He loves playing with the dogs in his foster home, going for sniff walks and playing with toys. He is in full on teething “piranha” mode, so the foster always keeps a toy or a stick in hand to redirect. He is showing his herding instinct and was stressing out the cat in his previous home, so a home without small animals would be best. His foster believes he could be trained to respect and leave a dog savvy cat alone. He is very observant of his surroundings before engaging. He also respects the older dogs in the home when they set a boundary.

Bear does well in his kennel when he is not out playing and engaging with his foster family, he is doing very well with potty training and has only had a couple of accidents. He will go potty outside right away. He is currently sleeping through the night and does not have any accidents overnight as long as he is let out first thing in the morning. His first home started clicker training, so he is accustomed to that method of training, he already knows how to sit for his food!

All of our dogs live in foster homes with volunteers. We need an approved application on file to set up a meeting with a dog you might be interested in. You can find our application at www.aussierescuemn.com All dogs have an adoption fee of $300 plus MN sales tax. His adoption fee will have a $100 deposit added to it for his neuter. We pride ourselves on matches that are awesome for both the dog and your family. Aussie Rescue of MN is here for support, advice and as a safety net for our dogs for the rest of their lives.

When in doubt, stay out! You can’t tell for sure if a cyanobacterial bloom is harmful just by looking at it. Protect yourself and your pets by not swimming in bodies of water that smell bad or look discolored. More tips: https://bit.ly/3gllTHj.

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Great Informational Post❤️

It’s been awhile since we had a FYI- Friday. 🤗

It’s that time if the year. It’s cold, icy, snowy. ❄️ That usually means that people are putting out ice melt on sidewalks and driveways. While nobody wants to slip and bust your leg on the ice, you want to be careful as certain types ice melt can be toxic to your dog. ALL Ice Melt should be used with caution but some are safer than others. SafePaw and Paw Thaw are a few brands more dog/pet friendly out there. AntiFreeze also is toxic to dogs so you want to be cautious as to what your dog is doing while outside to avoid possible stepping in or licking an antifreeze puddle.

❄️Keep your doggos safe this winter! ❄️

❌ PLEASE LET THEM BE ❌
The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.
Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.
Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.
They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.
Please be safe with your dogs!

Blue-green algae was discovered in Carver Lake today, Friday, July 10. Lake users are advised to avoid contact with the lake until further notice.

Not all blue-green algal blooms produce toxins; however, there is no way to predict if or when a bloom will produce toxins. For this reason, it is best to avoid contact and stay out of the water.

If you believe you or your pets are experiencing adverse health effects due to contact with, or ingestion of, lake water or algae, seek medical attention immediately.

Please note that Carver Lake Beach remains closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

More information and resources on blue-green algae can be found at www.woodburymn.gov/carverlake.
