Helen got a makeover! some of you might’ve seen her resting in the field, visible from the paved walking trail at Parkwood Hills. She’s named after Joel‘s grandmother. She was his grandma and grandpa‘s van for many years and then he inherited her in high school and she became rather legendary or possibly infamous at John Marshall back in the day. Ha ha! Now she’s resting in the flower field and has gotten a makeover complete with the Claire De Lune Peony which we grow and which is also the name of the song that we walked down the aisle to at our wedding! It means moonlight, hence the crescent moon and the Celtic symbol is one that he wore on his belt buckle with his kilt! Thank you Audrey!!!

Apparently January is houseplant month! I found a fun new way to use my dried flowers to brighten up my house plants. These strawflowers last forever and add a beautiful splash of color to just about anything. Also, I got this lovely large mini-jade aka elephant plant from and I added a petrified elephant molar to the moss on top as a fun nod to the name. Any guesses why it’s called an Elephant Plant?

Check out this short read about poppies on the battlefields of World War I. Flowers are nostalgic to each one of us in their own personal way. Flowers are interwoven with the stories of our lives, and our ancestors. Learning more of those stories deepens my affection for the flowers when I see them bloom, and motivates me to keep the blooms coming. Which flower is most nostalgic to you?

And last year we replaced part of the front lawn with native plants, and they’ve been so resilient during this drought! Drought resistant native flowers and grasses planted last August and thriving after 6 weeks without rain the first season!! No watering! No mowing! Rain water capture from the roof helps recharge the ground water, and their deep roots can help store and access it. They will continue to fill in and have more blooms coming.
