Lakeside had some visitors recently. The brownie troop in Irondequoit paid Dr. Licata a visit to help learn how to take care of animals as they work toward their pets badge!

Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

Leptospirosis vaccines are a core vaccine recommended to help prevent this terrible diseases. Please call or email us today to see if your pet is up to date.

Updates on Bird Flu in Cats.

Experts at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine have provided a resource page for pet owners and the general public on highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (H5N1).

Recently, H5N1 influenza cases have been reported in cats that have consumed contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.

Experts recommend that pet owners discontinue raw pet diets, and limit pet access to wild birds and raw milk.
