WHAT IF YOUR DOG COULD DOUBLE HER EXPECTED LIFESPAN?! 🦮🤩
For a breed that has an average lifespan of only 10 years, Augie doubled that living to 20 (just one month shy of her 21st birthday!). Believed to be the world’s oldest golden retriever, Augie is an example of the benefits of core longevity principles: staying active physically and socially throughout life (at 17, she spent an entire year exploring the country in an RV with her human and fur-family). 🚙🗺🐶
There is overwhelming research and evidence about how exercise can dramatically improve a dog’s health and life. The longevity power of keeping our dogs lean and giving them plenty of appropriate exercise shines through with Augie. When we interviewed her guardian Steve Hetterscheidt for The Forever Dog, he told us Augie swam an hour to an hour-and-a-half every day (pictured here at 16 🤯), and was often eager to continue retrieving the ball even after the younger dogs were tired. And despite slowing down as she got older, she continued moving and loved daily walks with her pack around their property. 👫🐕🦮🐕 As we explain in the book, giving older dogs plenty of time to smell outside every day is critical not only for exercise but for their enrichment and engagement with the world. Steve perceptively told us, “I always thought something that really contributed to her longevity was she exercised so much.”
