"I read somewhere a very profound statement: "The excellence in every art consists in the complete accomplishment of its purpose." Over the years, I've come across plenty of people who criticized me because they subscribed to the old-school methods of dominating a horse. They worked a horse as if they were going to war with it. And they were. If that's the way you deal with your horses, it's the way you deal with your fellow man as well. I just can't subscribe to that primitive notion of forcing your will on a horse or a human." - Buck Brannaman, Horseman, Believe

Autumn has officially started her re-training for the Equine Collective Inc 501c3 Rescue & Sanctuary lesson program.

An integral part of horse training is building a strong foundation of trust, followed by desensitization. Horses in the lesson program must be prepared for the unpredictability of kids—jumping, yelling, fast movements, jackets rustling, candy wrappers crinkling, loud laughter, and lots of petting (lol).

After several days of trust-building, Baylinn has started working on desensitizing Autumn. In just a few minutes, Autumn went from being afraid of pool noodles to accepting them. This quick progress is a testament to the trust she has in Baylinn. Autumn knows that Baylinn would never put her in harm’s way, so despite her initial fear, she learned the pool noodles are safe.

Desensitization is crucial not only for lesson horses but also for those used in trail riding, shows, or ranch work.

Good horse training is not for the faint of heart. It requires bravery, calmness, and a steady presence to earn a horse's trust and guide them through new experiences. Breaking a horse to ride is a delicate process that demands patience, understanding, and a deep connection forged through mutual respect.

It’s about more than just teaching a horse to carry a rider—it’s about building a relationship. You need to communicate clearly, set boundaries with kindness, and be consistent in your expectations. Each horse has its own personality, fears, and learning pace. Some days are full of breakthroughs, while others test your resolve.

To be a good trainer, you must adapt to each horse’s unique needs, remain calm in the face of resistance, and celebrate small victories. True progress comes from understanding the horse’s perspective and working with them, not against them. It’s a journey of trust, growth, and partnership that’s as rewarding as it is challenging.

These things can take time and require unwavering patience to achieve these goals.
If you’re unsure where to start, whether your horse is green, needs a restart, or just a tune up, give us a call for a free consultation.

Positive, trust-based horse training focuses on building a relationship of mutual respect and understanding between the horse and the trainer. Masterful horsemanship is nothing more than simple things done with excellence.

Training horses is about more than teaching skills or simply 'breaking' them to ride. It’s about building a partnership founded on trust and mutual respect, not just control. That’s why we ask our clients to commit to a minimum of 60 days for training. The first 30 days are dedicated to allowing your horse to acclimate to our barn and get to know us. Horses need time to feel safe and to trust the people working with them. We begin with grooming, scratches, walking, and groundwork to establish a strong bond. Only after trust is built do we move forward with the next steps in their training.

Pictured here is Baylinn working with Finnegan, a 3-year-old Irish Draft-QH cross. Finny is currently learning to accept a rider and saddle. Baylinn has spent time establishing groundwork and trust, and now she’s gently introducing him to the idea that having weight on his back is safe and nothing to fear.

If you're unsure where to begin or need guidance in your horse training journey, give us a call — we’re here to help.

With so many trainer options available, why choose Dual B?
We use a trust and connection based horse training method of pressure and release, positive reinforcement, and clear communication.

Positive, trust-based horse training focuses on building a relationship of mutual respect and understanding between the horse and the trainer, rather than using force, fear, or intimidation. It relies on clear communication, patience, and rewarding desired behaviors through positive reinforcement, such as treats, verbal praise, or gentle petting.

Key elements include:

- **Trust**: The horse is treated as a partner, and the trainer earns the horse's trust through consistency, kindness, and calm handling.
- **Positive reinforcement**: Rewards are given when the horse demonstrates the desired behavior, encouraging them to repeat it.
- **Clear communication**: Trainers use body language, voice commands, and cues that are easy for the horse to understand.
- **Patience and understanding**: Instead of punishing mistakes, the trainer focuses on teaching the horse what is expected in a low-stress environment.
- **Listening to the horse**: Trainers pay attention to the horse’s signals and respond appropriately, adjusting the training to the horse’s emotional state.

This method leads to a deeper bond, a horse that is more willing to learn, and training sessions that are enjoyable and enriching for both horse and handler.

“You can never rely on a horse that is educated by fear. There will always be something that he fears more than you. But, when he trusts you, he will ask you, what to do when he is afraid.”
