5 Things You Didn't Know About Bugs Bunny

On July 27, 1940, Bugs Bunny made his official debut in A Wild Hare, as a wise-cracking, smart-aleck rabbit. Here are 5 little-known facts you didn't know about Bugs Bunny, who debuted 80 years ago today...

He First Appeared As An Extra In a Porky Pig Cartoon~

The then-unnamed rabbit was created in 1938 for a cartoon starring Porky Pig called “Porky’s Duck Hunt” that was well-received. The name Bugs Bunny didn’t appear on the title card of the cartoon until 1941, following the success of “Elmer’s Pet Rabbit.”

His Mannerisms Were Inspired By Famous Actors~

A number of famous people were combined to create Bugs, including silent stars Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Bugs’ nonchalant, carrot-eating manner was inspired by a scene in It Happened One Night, when the fast-talking Clark Gable snacks on carrots while leaning on a fence. Groucho Marx used his cigar as a prop, and so does Bugs in the cartoons, even going so far as to borrow one of the comedian's lines, “'Of course, you know, this means war!” in 1953’s “Bully for Bugs.”

He Appeared in World War II Military Propaganda~

During World War II, instructional cartoons were made to educate American troops in areas such as protecting secrets, avoiding b***y traps, and sanitation. Bugs made cameos in some of these cartoons. The main character was Private Snafu, whose voice was performed by Mel Blanc, who was Bugs Bunny’s voice. One of the writers was Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel). The cartoons were considered top secret and even workers who put together the animations at Warner Bros. were not allowed to see the finished product.

Bugs May Have Saved Mel Blanc’s Life~

Mel Blanc was in a serious car accident in 1961 when his Astin Martin collided with another vehicle along Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, which left him in a coma. He didn’t awaken until two weeks later when the doctor asked him, “Bugs Bunny, how are you doing today?” and Blanc replied in Bugs' voice, "What’s up Doc?” Later, the doctor would say of the incident,“It seemed like Bugs Bunny was trying to save his life.”

Bugs Bunny Is Used in Psychological Studies

In several psychological studies about false beliefs psychologists have shown patients fake advertising for Disney World featuring Bugs Bunny. According to the studies, a significant number of subjects claim to have gone to Disney World and met Bugs Bunny even though Bugs is a character from Warner Brothers and would never have appeared at a theme park owned by Disney.

5 Facts You Didn't Know About the Roswell Incident

On this day in 1997, U.S. Air Force officials released a 231-page report dismissing long-standing claims of an alien spacecraft crash in Roswell, New Mexico, almost exactly 50 years earlier. The truth is out there, and perhaps these five fascinating facts will help you decide where you stand…

Strange Flying Object Crashes Near Roswell~

During the middle of 1947, debris from a strange object was found by a rancher named William Brazel and his son near Roswell, New Mexico. Brazel collected the pieces of wreckage and took them to the local sheriff’s office. Some people in the area believed that the wreckage was from an alien spacecraft and that alien bodies were removed from the site to be studied, either at Area 51 in Nevada or in Roswell. It was admitted by the government that the object was part of Project Mogul, high altitude balloons that were capable of detecting nuclear testing by the Soviets.

It Wasn't Just the Aircraft That Crashed~

According to several eyewitness accounts, troops removed several bodies from the scene that were far from human. All accounts claimed to see the same short, 3-to-4-foot tall bodies carted away. Each had a large head, big eyes, and a single hole for a nose. The Air Force claimed that the "bodies" were, in fact, crash dummies used on the weather balloon. However, believers are quick to call the bluff on that excuse.

A Future President Saw What Might Have Been a UFO~

Sightings of UFOs were common during the 1970s, and the governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter, reported seeing one a few years before he was elected president. He was so convinced that he said he would publicize the government’s knowledge of UFOs and the mysterious crash at Roswell if he was elected president. After Carter was elected in 1977, he stated that if the information related to UFOs was released, it could be a risk to national security.

Some Claim Area 51 is Famous for More Than Just Aliens~

As if one conspiracy theory wasn't enough for this famed government test site, some believe that Area 51 was home to the staged lunar landing video, too. Though just 6 percent of Americans are still skeptical about the Apollo 11 mission, those who do are pretty vocal about it and have some interesting theories. The idea that Area 51 was involved actually isn't too far from the truth—the government used the site for testing several vehicles used by the astronauts.

UFOs are Everywhere in Roswell Today~

The alien culture and celebration in Roswell lives on, even as the story was debunked. Every year, Roswell is home to a large festival to commemorate and celebrate the crash landing with costume parades for people and pets, live entertainment, guest speakers, and family-friendly activities. This year, the festival celebrated the 70th anniversary of the UFO incident. Further up the road in Roswell, you can find a flying saucer-shaped McDonald’s restaurant, an international UFO museum and research center, and UFO tours to the Project Mogul balloon crash site.

5 Things You Should Know About Your Body

You Have a One-of-a-Kind Tongue Print~

Just as your fingerprint is uniquely yours, so too is your tongue print, according to a study by the Thai Moogambigai Dental College. Biometric scans can be done to compare the individual shape (long or short, wide or narrow) and texture (ridges, wrinkles, and marks), with specific details tracked and mapped by a "tongue image-acquiring device." Of course, while this thing you didn't know about your body might be interesting, it probably is not very useful to forensic investigators.

Taste Buds Dull With Age~

Wine may taste better as it ages, but as we age, it's harder for us to appreciate it. Just as hearing and vision tend to deplete as the years go by, your sense of taste does the same. As you get older, your taste buds regenerate more slowly after injury or if you take certain medications. And bad news for the ladies: Women generally experience a decrease in their taste sensitivity beginning in their 50s, while men don't experience that until their 60s.

Your Rear Is Your Largest Muscle~

While there is some debate about which of your muscles is the strongest, your gluteus maximus happens to be your largest, according to the Library of Congress. These muscles help keep your body upright and move your hips and thighs have to work against gravity when you're walking uphill or upstairs. Oh, and they also cushion you in the seated position.

Half Your Hand Strength Is in Your Pinkie~

The pinkie seems unassuming, but it's crucial for your hand strength—helping the thumb to pinch and giving more power to the ring, middle, and index fingers. Laurie Rogers, hand therapist at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, told the New York Times that losing your pinkie would mean, "You'd lose 50 percent of your hand strength, easily."

Your Intestine Is Four Times as Long as You Are~

This just in: there are a plethora of things you didn't know about your body. Case in point: your small intestine is about 18 to 23 feet long, meaning, if you uncoiled it, it would stretch to almost four times the length of your own body.
