The 4th of July can be really scary for pets! And shelters nationwide see an uptick in lost animals 😢. What can you do to keep your pets safe?

1. Keep them home and inside. Don't bring dogs to firework events, even if they haven’t shown fear in the past. They could develop a new fear. Noise phobias often don’t appear until adulthood. A puppy that seemed fine last July 4 might not be the same this year. And PLEASE don’t leave them in cars or alone outside.

2. Remember to take dogs out for a final walk/potty break before dark, so they can stay inside when fireworks start.

3. Use white noise or find a very quiet space, like an interior room or finished basement. Studies show that a combination of white noise (e.g., a fan, air purifier) combined with soft music, TV, or radio often do the best at making the booms less startling.

4. And for kitties, who have special spots they like to go when scared, let them go to that place. Generally speaking, hiding is an important coping mechanism for cats!

5. And last BUT NOT LEAST, make sure your animals are wearing tags and are microchipped. And be sure your microchip information is up to date! Plus, remember that though microchips aren't homing devices, there are a lot of tracking devices on the market now. Some use GPS or cell phone towers to help you find your animal if they leave your property, so consider this for escape artists!
