Janeen's Catahoula Leopard Dog Rescue Network

Janeen's Catahoula Leopard Dog Rescue Network Over 40 years has been my experience with this breed. This is for the purpose of rescuing Catahoula Leopard Dog's and Catahoula Mixes. LET'S DO IT!

I have no cell service, only landline, no text. Call if you want or need help, email [email protected] My very first Catahoula experience was in Arizona with a small pup of the neighbor's named Stopper. As Stopper grew, my respect and love for that dog and awe for his intelligence and loyalty grew. It would be a while before I would find out that Stopper was a purebred registered natural Bobtail C

atahoula. This started my love for a breed that continues to hold me in its grip. A breed I set out to learn in depth; a journey of a lot of years with a lot of experiences. Stopper and a neighbor's female purebred Doberman, had an oopsie breeding. It produced 3 unwanted puppies, one of which was to be my very first rescue dog resulting in Blueberry being my introduction to the Catahoula. I knew nothing about the breed but this was my first days of learning. A love affair began that brought enthusiasm, zeal and desire in me to HELP people that didn't know and understand this breed's heart, drive, vitality, love of family, love of life, independent thinking, working ability, hunting instincts, loyalty and intelligence. The Catahoula was a little known breed and is not a breed that fits into every life style but I knew that there would be people who could be taught to change their life style to become good Catahoula owners as I had. I wanted to aid people in knowing how to choose a breed, identify the breed and how to sort out whether this breed or another would fit or not fit into their lives. I knew that with guidance there could be fewer on the euthanasia list in overcrowded shelters and that it was possible that with education, proper help, guidance, perspective and support, we could make a difference; part of my mission is to be leader and team player. Eventually I was referred to a rescue message board, thus my introduction to saving a misunderstood breed, because of humanity's lack of knowledge of the breed in general. Huge quantities of good dogs were being euthanized and my experience and knowledge could be put to use. Pain, loss, fear showed in dogs faces that haunted me day and night. Shelters that were inundated with huge quantities of dogs and few people stepping up to adopt. I saw apathy in humans unwilling to step out of their comfort zone and face the reality of all this; I saw struggles of a few volunteers, trying to rescue and save them without resources or much help. Dogs were tormented, stressed, sick, unwanted and abused yet still showing signs of wanting to be a friend to human counterparts; both Catahoula purebreds, and Catahoula mixes. Something inside me said, you can help. It took a while to get a feel for how I could offer my expertise acquired through years of hands on with these dogs; this breed that wasn't so well known. I knew that what I had seen as a very young girl, the need I saw then all around me, was now greater than ever before and even if I couldn't save them all, I could not sit around and leave it to others to do. I had to do my part. I could inspire, encourage, and teach dog owners how to work through issues and thereby keeping their dogs out of shelters. I wanted to offer a working relationship with adopters or potential adopters to turn things around for the dogs. I knew that I had stickability in my heart and mind and I wanted to put my time and efforts towards being the voice for the voiceless; the help for the helpless. To be support for those who did not know where turn for help. Unlimited support, patience, kindness and firmness to help them learn what a long life of experience had taught me and that everyone can change and everyone can win. I wanted to pass it on. I wanted to teach people how to try, how to build confidence in their relationships with their dogs, into something lasting and to put confidence in them. I wanted them to see what true companionship can turn into with a little work. I wanted to dispel myths that were now proven to be poor training practices. I wanted to share what I had proven myself through the years; offering something tried and tested. Helping them understand better nutrition, safety practices, and offering practical first aid. I wanted to educate about spay/neuter and proper veterinary care. I wanted to just be there and help clear their perspectives so that they could enjoy giving life another chance to a FUR friend that had already been let down; to find the richness in offering their dog a faithfulness that dogs willingly give back even when undeserved. People need to believe there is always HOPE and always HELP. We only fail when we fail to try. This is what life is all about: ANOTHER CHANCE. I wanted to aid in any way I possibly could to help make it a reality. Nearly 40 years of experience with this breed and 14 years with my finger in rescue makes me say heartily and emphatically that this WAS and IS my passion. It has proven successful in the past and has grown. Life is on going and on growing. Life is precious, I want to help others stop throwing it away. I hope this will inspire others to HELP and it will become their passion and mission. I plan to continue making it mine.

DAISY: SPECIAL NEEDS GIRL, SHELTER CONTACT TO ADOPT DIRECT. … JANEEN WILL BE WILLING TO GIVE UNLIMITED PHONE BEHAVIORAL HELP, ALL THE EXPERIENCED TRAINING YOU WILL NEED IS AVAILABLE THROUGH JANEEN. SHE IS VISION AND HEARING DEFICIT. NO SHOCKING DEVICES ON THIS DOG, PRONG COLLARS OR CHOKE CHAINS, ELECTRIC FENCES OR VIBRATING OR GPS DEVICES ON HER. IT WILL UNDO THE TRUST THAT HAS BEEN BUILT.

NOTE…** is Janeen’s comments on breed behaviors that are normal in the breed.

Per shelter Rep… Okay, so I spoke with the last tech. She says the same thing that everyone else says that she's a really super sweet dog once she gets to know you. She has been doing much better with her. Dog reactiveness, she tends to like male dogs over female dogs. We only found one female dog She liked and it was another catahoula. She says that she remembers people that she meets like, if a volunteer will come in that she hadn't seen it over a year. She'll remember that volunteer and get excited to see them. If introduced to men properly, it doesn't take her very long for her to warm up to them. But she's a really super sweet girl and is excellent on a leash.

Car reactive - does not like them driving by her** WORKING BREEDS ARE REACTIVE TO MOVING AND LOUD NOISES… MOTORCYCLES, CARS, MOWERS, SKATE BOARDS, W**D EATERS, BICYCLES, VACUUMS…IT IS BUILT IN TO THEIR SURVIVAL MODE..

Can be reactive to human men ** MEN HAVE A TIMBER TO THEIR VOICE AND A STRENGTH THAT ANIMALS SENSE…SOMETIMES IT INTIMIDATES UNTIL THEY EARN THE DOGS TRUST.

Can be stranger reactive: ** Catahoulas and other working breeds are very tight packed with humans. One owner one pack leader is very common. Very loyal dogs but slow introductions often help them be tolerant of strangers. Do not let guests or strangers or children correct dogs. Not a good practice

Dog reactive: **AGAIN VISION AND HEARING IMPAIRMENT MAKES THEM A BIT MORE VULNERABLE AND REACTIVE BUT STILL CAN BE TAUGHT TO NOT OVER REACT. BEST IF AN ONLY DOG IN THE NEW HOME.

Potty trained

Great on a leash - sometimes will lunge at another dog if it comes to close to her…** vision and hearing impairment can make dogs a little more reactive …some feel safe on leash and some feel trapped. All dogs with this special handicap should always be on leash if not in a fenced in secured area.

Great in the yard as long as dogs in adjacent yards leave her alone.

Storm anxiety - does well woth thunder treats. ** MANY DOGS FEAR THUNDER STORMS. electricity charge in the air and loud booms. Not surprising. Thunder shirts often help, crating with a plastic enclosed crate can be helpful…Den.

Does not like feet being touched ** MOST DOGS DO NOT LIKE FEET TOUCHED. PREDATORS GO FOR THE FRONT FEET AND THROAT SO IT IS A BUILT IN CAUTION FOR MOST DOGS AND ESPECIALLY WORKING BREEDS. Start de sensitizing them on rear feet…less sensitive to touch and handling on back feet.

CATS ARE SNACKS…PREY DRIVE. **. Nature teaches that it is high risk to put dogs and cats together, canines and felines are mortal enemies. Would you put a cat and rat together that are pets and say buddy up?? It can work with animals to get along with things that are not natural to species but do not fault them if it is not working. NO SMALL DOGS…STILL COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR CATS..SIZE WISE.

Takes correction well from staff and people that she knows.

Does not tear up blankets sheets or toys.

STATS, OVERVIEW: GAFFY- His birth date is OCT 6, 2023. He is now a year and a half old, a neutered male as of Jan 2025. He is a Bloodhound/Redbone mixed pup. He is up to date on vaccinations. He weighs 65 pounds, 23 inches at the shoulder. He is crate broke and is not left unattended in a house with no supervision because he will chew and be puppy naughty at this point in time, fed twice daily, and doing well on potty training, though he can’t hold it for a long period; if no one lets him out quickly he will go potty, he is trying. His owner is a senior and she isn’t fast in doing that sometimes. He does alert that he needs to go out. On leash he is good unless he is stimulated on the other side of a fence, then he will go forward too fast for his handler. He is a typically focused hound. He loves toys, he likes the crinkly sounding ones and squeakies. He does not destruct them when playing. He was not socialized a lot when young and so he has an unease with strangers that he hasn’t been properly introduced to and he has learned to trust. He is a bit over protective of his owner and yard and considers it his job and being young as well as having stranger danger feelings it causes him to bay and warn and alert. He just needs more time and socializing as he has only been in his new home 7 months and is still learning territory stimulants and what is expected of him. He is doing very well with positive reinforcements as far as house manners goes, eager to learn and so very trainable. He is food motivated and that helps in training. He definitely needs a yard where he can run and play, he needs to be in a fence that he cannot scale; like any hound he would put his nose to the ground and follow scents and be out roaming which is not safe. Also encountering strangers he might scare them with his own stranger danger reaction. He is just a puppy after all and needs more work with gentleness, firmness, manners, and no hurtful devices PERIOD, no electronic devices or fences are acceptable for this dog. It would send him the wrong direction. He needs patience and love and motivational positive training only. NO GPS COLLARS or VIBRATING COLLARS and NO SHOCK COLLARS or electric /or invisible fences. Anything with a battery in it does transfer electricity to a dog even though humans cannot feel it and it makes them extremely reactive and edgy. He rides in a car well, loves to watch out through closed windows at scenery. Very alert interested dog, a good hound trait. Don’t know how he handles nail trims. Slow intro’s to the female mobile vet was scary at first for him, but he did calm down with her slow patient waiting and using treats. He hasn’t been to a vet out of his new yard and he hasn’t been there long enough for us to know any more about his vet manners. Please see history and reason for rehoming him in next category below. He wears a harness during the day as well as a collar with ID. It would be advantageous for him to have a microchip. He does get along with the owners 8 year old basset, we feel he would do awesome after getting acquainted with a spayed female dog that is not bossy but loves to play and expend energy. This would wear his puppy energy down and would help his socializing with humans. This is a beautiful dog with wonderful potential in the right home. He would benefit from an active owner that jogs or runs with him on leash and in time he could be on long line. Hounds roam so they need to be leashed for their safety and everyone else’s. He deserves a FOREVER home that really suits his needs. Children 14 and over that is dog respectful might be ok, some that would play with him AFTER he gets acquainted with them slowly and accepts them. No toddler or no children under 14 or 15 years old. No cats or small dogs nor other small pets.

HISTORY: His owner is a senior with arthritis and she had two dogs but one passed away and the other grieving dog and her own grief brought the need for a new friend. She saw his advertisement for a new home, went and met him and he bayed at first and then went right with her and settled down. He has done exceptionally in the settling in process, but the area he lives in, the rental home, has a very weak and low fence so he figured out how to sail over it. It also is a high stimulus traffic area both with humans; dogs on and off leash, lots of cats and rabbits and deer and so it produces continual over stimulation. Also he is very strong on leash and his senior owner needs an easier dog to take out on leash forwhen he is focused he could pull her down and injure her. He is too stimulated there and could use a calmer area and home to settle into. Too much dog for her, and that these are the only reasons for rehoming. She loves him. She cannot be pulled down stairs and endure a fall because he is so focused and protecting his home as well.

GOOD: He has a sweet personality and initiates play with his senior owner, though she runs out of steam before he does. He could use more play. The older dog plays some but runs out of steam also. This is a young healthy strong hound. When he plays with his toys he tosses them in the air and catches them or throws them across the room and runs after them, so he entertains himself when no one else can or will. He has a lot of charm and charisma. When he is corrected positively he teases at first and then will acquiesce. Owner can take items and even food away from him but she does it respectfully not bossy.

BAD: He will chew on plastic and phone charger ends per owner, shoes are always tempting. He takes the shoe and bobs his head wanting to play but he takes the liner out and plays with it if she is not in the game. Shoe liners smell strong of owners and that is always tempting. It is a game for him. Him not being completely house broke YET might bother someone a bit, but he is trainable. His ability to scale a fence is bad. If he is left out alone and gets bored he will try to scale the fence, like most hounds. Stranger danger and needing slow introductions is a negative but surmountable. He is not secure with strangers at first and he BAYS THEM. He just needs time and kindness and patience. He loves to shred paper and cardboard like many dogs do and he will counter surf if food is left on counters. Pretty tempting for any dog but especially for a hound.

UGLY: In our opinion there is nothing ugly to date about this dog. He is a young dog trying to find his way with human help and supervision. (Admin Janeen)
