Rutherford Equine Mobile Services Practice History

Rutherford Large Animal Services was started back in 1993 by Dr. Paul Hinkle.

Dr. Rachel Butterworth-Tice joined the practice in November of 2007 when Dr. Hinkle purchased Cox Animal Hospital from Dr. Lanny Walker and took over a majority of the large animal work. In October of 2009, Dr. Butterworth-Tice purchased Rutherford Large Animal Services from Dr. Hinkle and continues to live up to the promise of professional, quality and personal veterinary care to farm animals tha

Dr. Rachel Butterworth-Tice grew up on a small horse farm in central Maryland, where her mother taught her to ride English style as well as a deep love and respect for animals. She studied animal science at Virginia Tech and proceeded to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine on the Virginia Tech campus. She graduated from veterinary school in 2003 and took her first job in Maryland at an ambulatory equine practice. She worked there for three years before moving to North Carolina to take a position with Rutherford Large Animal Services. In 2009 she bought the practice and is now the sole owner of Rutherford Large Animal Mobile Services, PPLC. She currently lives on a small farm in Rutherford county with her husband Matthew, son Gregory, three horses, five cats, two dogs and a flock of chickens. Bachelor of Science - Animal Science

Have you had your horses teeth checked lately? They may need floated. Routine equine dental care is one of the most important maintenance procedures you can do… improper and or inadequate care can lead to poor performance due to ill fitting bits, pain from sharp hooks rubbing the inside of the mouth as well as affecting nutritional intake due to an altered ability to chew. Dentals are done under mild sedation by a licensed veterinarian to ensure a pleasant experience for the animal and typically only take about 20 - 30 minutes. They can resume normal activity the same day…

Rutherford Equine is feeling extra thankful this year. We had a successful breeding season, a lovely year of horse shows, lots of new critters, and the kids are growing up…
Also, as our area is recovering from the tragedy of Hurricane Helene we are lucky to continue to provide care to beautiful western North Carolina.

We appreciate each and every one of you and can’t wait to see what 2025 holds! 💫

We spent Wednesday at Lollybrook Farm supporting Dr Bs passion for her breeding program. Wrenn was perfect as always and our ‘Lana Del Bay’ was accepted into the Hanoverian registry. We are so excited for this girls future! 💫

Rutherford Equine extends their greatest sympathies to everyone dealing with the effects of Hurricane Helene right now.

Our mobile truck is attending to appointments and emergencies as best as possible and Katelyn is stationed with wifi to address needs and relay information to Dr. B.

Life lately… ✨

We survived breeding season (barely), we finally decided to let Rachel go on a vacation earlier in July, and we finally got a filly.

May 31st, our beloved Wrenn, gave us a spicy little girl who is now formally known as ‘Lana Del Bay’.

We have some exciting news!

Moving forward we are now Rutherford Equine Mobile Services PLLC.

With that comes a few changes within the practice…. We are no longer accepting new clients unless they are equines. We will still provide the utmost care to our current non equine clients.

Dr. Rachel would like to focus on her passion of horses including all aspects of reproduction, preventive and wellness care along with chiropractic and accupuncture.

Thank you for all your support throughout years and moving forward.

Talk about ending the year with a bang…

two enucleations in one week. 👀

These surgeries were performed to increase quality of life due to previous injuries/infections.

Both patients can return to a normal life including work after a brief recovery period.
