Let have a look at this CT Scan. 8yr old dog presented after the pet put his head through the fence and the neighbors dog bit the pets muzzle causing a fracture to the maxilla and nose and some bite wounds you can see the fracture in the red circle. Originally on exam we thought canine tooth 104 was missing or fell out, but when finishing the CT Scan we were amazed to find the tooth in the nasal cavity in the right nostril. You can see in the yellow circle where the tooth should be but when the dog was bit it forced the tooth up in to the nose, the yellow arrow points out the canine tooth in the nose. Some small bite wounds were cleaned and sutured and the area repaired and some bone removed. The pet also received a dental cleaning and some teeth were removed including tooth 204 circled in blue, you can see the area has increased bone loss due to prolonged periodontal disease. I bet you are wondering about the tooth the tooth was removed through the nostril. Would you like to see that video? Pet did great during anesthesia and will recover well with time.

This CT scan of a 4 year old dog shows just how damaging dental disease can be from not brushing your dogs teeth. In the first photo you can see how periodontal disease damaged the surrounding jaw bone causing the jaw to fracture (red circle) you can also see how it destroyed the bone on the upper jaw, take notice to all the exposed roots that are normaly covered with bone (yellow circle). The second photo of the X-ray shows the the fracture site and the decay of bone (red circle). The last X-ray shows the other side of the jaw with bone decay. Pets are domesticated animals and this means they need routine health care and dental care. Dogs should have their teeth bushed twice a day and have regular check ups. Bad teeth and halitosis is not normal in dogs or cats and when we take pets in to our homes and make them family members it’s our responsibility to care for our pets. VOHC approved dental chews and water additives help but nothing beats daily brushing.

Does your clinic put their Veterinary Technicians on the clinic website? I think technicians are far too under looked for the work and tasks we perform in the clinic. When a clinic show cases their staff they really show how much they value the team and not just the doctors.

Did you know dogs need routine dental care? Let’s take a look at this X-ray, and a before and after. So we have a 9y old poodle mix whose eating habits have changed and scratches at the face often. Oral exam was difficult as pet would not allow. Under anesthesia X-rays were taken and showed the severity of alveolar bone loss around the tooth and surrounding area. As you can see in the photos once hair and debris were removed you could see more of the damaged area. After removing affected teeth 105-108 the surrounding tissue was closed and the pet will have a much healthier and pain free life. Remember our pets can’t tell us what hurts that’s why regular routine exams are necessary as well as at home daily brushing.

Here we can see the lower mandible of a dogs mouth that has had previous unknown trauma, more specifically the lower 300 quadrant. What you can see circled is teeth 301,302,303 (incisors) and tooth 304 (canine). As you can see the incisors have been fractured leaving segments of teeth and the roots and the canine tooth has also fractured leaving the root as well. As you can see the surrounding area was corrected, removing roots and affected alveolar bone from the lower jaw. The correction will aid in overall better oral health for the pet as well as solving pain and discomfort for the pet.

This might be a shock to some but did you know dogs and cats need regular dental care and yes that includes daily brushing. Have a look at this X-ray of a dogs lower mandibular carnassial tooth. You can really get an idea just how large dogs teeth are and just how much of the tooth you don’t see. Brushing your dogs teeth daily can reduce the amount of debris and bacteria that can cause bad breath and ultimately calculus growth and periodontal/dental disease.

Did you know cats have 30 teeth? Did you know you can help protect your pets teeth from dental disease as well as halitosis (bad breath) by brushing their teeth daily? Starting a daily brushing routine and having regular dental exams can save your pet from dental discomfort and having to have teeth removed like the cat seen in this photo.

Here you can see the severity that a carnassial tooth root abscess can have on the surrounding area of bone and tissue. This photo is showing exposed roots of tooth 108 (top right maxillary). This was a closed non draining abscess and the tooth was removed and area treated. Remember to brush your dogs tooth they may look clean but many times the issues are under the gums.

I’ll keep the terminology real simple. Here you can see an X-ray of the lower jaw (mandible) of a 3 year old French bulldog. Simply put the dog had developed cancer of the lower jaw and oral surgery was performed to remove a portion of the mandible. Pet is expected to recover normally and with regular rechecks to evaluate the area.

You might be asking yourself “is pet insurance really worth it?” The truth is many pet owners can’t afford routine, care or even emergency visits to the vet. If you had pet insurance the fear of going to the vet might just fade away. Honestly, there are so many companies out there offering pet insurance and you just have to find the right policy that fits you and your pet. Don’t make your next visit to the Vet even scarier wondering if this is gonna cost me an arm and a leg. Don’t make your next Google search “what’s wrong with my pet” but instead google pet insurance and find a policy that’s right for your pet.

p.s. fun fact dogs and cats are pregnant for 62 days, one other animal shares this same gestation period and that’s a guinea pig. Also retractable leashs suck 😃

This size ball is not an appropriate toy for a 68 pound Labrador. Also all toys should be thrown away once they are broken. Use appropriate sized pet toys this can prevent the pets from swallowing them. Keep your pets safe and healthy.
P.s. if you have a retractable leash throw it away.

Before each dental cleaning I document the teeth and add photos to the record. This case was interesting cause the dog was aggressive and needed to have sedation to place the IV catheter and to even get a clear look at the mouth. After Xrays it was clear that all the teeth needed to be removed and this was a full mouth extraction. What you are seeing on the teeth is hard calculus build up, food and debris.
