Even indoor bunnies are at risk!

RHDV2 can be tracked into your house on your shoes and clothes. It can live without a host for 4 months so once it's inside, it stays for quite a while. There are no symptoms for RHDV2 - just sudden death.

Visit https://newmexicohrs.org/list-of-vets/ for a list of vets who offer the vaccine. Currently-unvaccinated rabbits will need 2 doses given 3 weeks apart. Your rabbit then needs one dose annually as a booster.

Piper was on a foster-to-adopt program with the shelter. When she was returned, she came in with three babies and was a shadow of her former self. She’s still very cautious but does like to be petted. She plays with toys and rearranges her space. Wood toys are her favorite. She’s disassembled several! She will need a home that is quiet and patient as she grows into being a new family member. Will that family be yours?

Astrid

If you like to spoil your rabbit companion, Astrid is the bunny for you! She’s not shy. She loves attention and being petted. She will be happy to spend her nap time in a cute bunny house you find online or better yet, have made for her. She can have an opinion about the arrangement of the items in her space and will move them to suit herself. This little princess enjoys having time out to binky and her own space to retreat to.

Bunny math! 1+1=❤️
People who adopt a rabbit companion often decide to find a companion for their rabbit. Rabbits can be very choosy about their companions. Why not take the easy route and adopt a pair? Blueberry and Chickpea are a sweet pair looking for a forever home. To meet them in person, join us for an upcoming adoption day.

Miss Maple or Miss Watson?
Foster bunny Maple modeled a rabbit pet costume at adoption day. When she wasn’t costumed, there was no disguising her happy, friendly nature. She asked for petting from everyone who came by her pen.

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) has been found in domestic and wild rabbits in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and as of May 13, 2020, Palm Springs, California. We’ve all started getting used to precautions for our COVID-19 virus. This virus is much hardier and deadlier for domestic rabbits and some species of wild rabbits. It's transmitted by touch and can survive for 105 days on surfaces in hot and cold climates. There’s no cure and the death rate is very high.

More Information: Here’s the link to House Rabbit Society’s RHDV page https://rabbit.org/rhdv/. There’s a section on how to protect your rabbits.

Vaccines: There are vaccines, but they have to be imported to the US by a USDA registered vet. Dr. Brick at Madison Avenue Veterinary Clinic in Fair Oaks is working to import the vaccine and is taking orders from new and current clients. The process of producing some of the vaccines is ethically difficult because it costs lab rabbits their lives. If interested contact the clinic by May 19, 2020.

What to do:

If you did not receive and respond to an email from Sacramento House Rabbit Society, contact Madison Avenue Veterinary Clinic directly at (916) 961-1541 by Tuesday, May 19 to get more information about the vaccine or be added to a list to order the vaccine for your rabbit(s). *Please leave a voicemail if no one answers during business hours.

Rabbits have a natural instinct to chew! There are many rabbit-safe toys to physically and mentally stimulate your furry friend, made from a variety of materials with different textures and tastes, that can help protect your valuable belongings by providing acceptable outlets for chewing, digging, burrowing, and shredding.

At our Adoption Day last Saturday, two groups of three rabbits were being bonded. Our New Monday store volunteer, is bonding the Petco sisters Lucy and Ethel to her widowed mini Californian/Himalayan Leia. It looks
promising. The other three, not so much.
