Health SCREENED vs. SMOKE SCREEN 💨
Buyer/Breeder Beware: that stylish little CHIC Certified badge doesn’t mean what you MIGHT think it does…
Full disclosure: I own, show and breed several Frenchies with OFA CHIC certifications. And their results are CHIC NORMAL, not just allowing OFA to make four minimum tests public regardless of results.
I’ve also bred my stud with EXCELLENT hips to several different females resulting in over 38 offspring with OFA GOOD or better hips, including the BEST score for a Frenchie in the entire OFA PennHip database. Many of those dogs were under age 24 months, and OFA won’t post their NORMAL PRELIMINARY results (unless waived ahead of submission) which is why their owners PROUDLY display their OFA certificates for public viewing…
Anyone who knows me, knows I am always an advocate of health testing FBDs and USUALLY applaud those who do so. More on that below…
The TRUTH is that it is up to YOU, “Boo”, to extract HONEST results from a stud owner or breeder IF they’ll give them to you. Doesn’t matter how many ribbons or titles they’ve displayed to awe you into looking past the obvious… SATIN and titles DON’T substitute HEALTH RESULTS.
And neither does an EMPTY badge saying “CHIC Certified”, which you can now sneak in on a dog under 24 months. Here’s how ⬇️
SMOKE 💨 and Mirrors 🪞: An alarming trend to bypass pesky labels of dysplasia is to slap a PennHip test on a 12 month old, get the patellas, basic cardiac and eye 👁️ test and BINGO! You’re CHIC certified. That won’t fly if you do OFA hip evaluation, just so you know. Nope… you have to WAIT and retest after 24 months before you can broadcast “CHIC Certified”. And if anyone dares ask you for actual results, you can dance around that and divert with a podium pic 📸 and hope they give up.
NOT THE SAME: PennHip and OFA hips DO NOT evaluate the same things either. PennHip doesn’t rate the depth of socket… just the tightn
