🚫 MYTH: I have an indoor only cat so they don’t need flea or heartworm prevention.

Fleas and mosquitos (that carry heartworms) can still enter your house exposing your indoor cat to them. Lots of "indoor only" cats also go out on the screened in porch. Fleas can be small enough to jump through your screen and onto your cat!

Even your exotic pets should see a veterinarian at least once a year so we can assess their overall health and ensure they don't have any serious health concerns like vitamin deficiencies or metabolic bone disease. Most exotic pets are good at hiding signs of illness until they are very far progressed since that is how they would survive in the wild.

Veterinary technicians carry all kinds of fun things in their pockets including treats, pens, Sharpies, bandage scissors, and in Sam's case... pocket pups 😂

Buddy Levi is the perfect sized pocket pup . He was more than happy to hang out with Sam while she worked on follow up calls instead of sitting in his cage after his dental cleaning.

In honor of National Wildlife Day here are a few of the injured and/or abandoned wildlife we have had drop off with us so far this year: a juvenile opossum, a baby blue jay, and a few screech owls!

After wildlife gets dropped off here at the clinic, the doctor will triage it and treat any injuries. Once they are stable, we will transfer them to our rehab specialist at who will take care of them and eventually release them back to live out their lives in the wild!

Tampa Bay Wildlife Rehabilitation is 501(c)(3) organization and we are happy to be a supporting partner by accepting these abandoned and injured wildlife!

Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day featuring 2 of Dr. Woodman's silly orange kitties, Calypso and Isabella.

Did you know...
🔸 Majority of orange cats are male! Only about 1 in 5 are female.
🔸 Their coats can be a variety of different patterns including: classic, blotched, mackerel, tiger, spotted, ticked, and patched

Sofie was all dressed up for her first puppy visit with us! Her adorable outfit matched her adorable personality 😍

Puppies should receive 3-4 sets of booster vaccines between ages 8-20 weeks of age including distemper, parvo, rabies, and bordetella vaccines. At Animal Hospital of Northwood, your puppies visit will include a physical exam with the doctor, any vaccine boosters needed, a f***l test to test for intestinal parasites, a preventative deworming, and we will also discuss recommendations for heartworm and flea prevention.

On Sunday, we spent the morning at the aquarium! It was so fun to get to see and learn about other animals we don't see on a daily basis! We attended the Flight of Feathers bird show which was super fun!

Another thing we got to see was a live Bufo toad! This is one of their ambassador animals they bring out for educating and touching. Bufo toads are toxic to pets! We got an up close view of the glands where their milky white toxin secretes out if your pet puts the toad into their mouth. Check out our Instagram highlights to see some of the other animals we saw at the aquarium.

Meet Beemo! 😄👋🏽
Beemo was here recently for an exam and rabies vaccine. Ferrets are more prone to having a vaccine reaction compared to dogs or cats.

Some symptoms that could alert you your ferret may be having a vaccine reaction include: vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, pawing at the face, redness in the paws or face, excessive drooling. Ferrets can die from a vaccine reaction very quickly so it is important to keep a very close eye on them following any vaccines.

Because of this, we have our ferret patients drop off for us to administer the vaccines so we can monitor them for a few hours following the vaccine to ensure they do not have a reaction. If they were to begin having a reaction, Dr. Grennon would be able to immediately intervene since they are in the hospital. Thankfully, Beemo did not experience a reaction so we just got to hang out and cuddle him for few hours.

Today is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day 🩺🐈
There's lots of ways to get your cat to the vet, the most important thing is that they come and see us on an annual basis for a physical exam and to update their vaccines! Mr. Darcy and Georgiana arrived for their visit in a pet stroller!

At our staff meeting last week, we started off with a building challenge. Each group received 20 pieces of spaghetti, 3 ft of string, 3 ft of masking tape, and 1 marshmallow. The goal was to build the tallest free-standing structure in 10 minutes. The only rule was that the marshmallow had to be on top! 👷‍♀️👷 Deb, Julian, Jordan, and Montana won with their structure standing 22 inches tall! They were also the only team to use the string in their structure design!

We had a special guest doctor today in honor of World Lizard Day, Dr. Pringle 🩺
He had a very busy day complete with:
- a full physical exam on Husky
- cold laser therapy on Husky's back hind leg to help his arthritis pain
- put some medication in the lock box for a client to pick up
- answered the phone and scheduled an appointment
- approved of our new marketing sign for exotic appointments
- looked at a f***l sample under the microscope to check for intestinal parasites

Did you know pets may experience some back-to-school blues when their family is not home as often. Here are ways to help your furry friend adjust:
☑️ Plan Ahead: Gradually acclimate your pet to being alone by leaving the house for short periods of time.
☑️ Use Distractions: Provide a puzzle or other interactive toys to ensure your furry friend is entertained.
☑️ Reward Them: Give your pet their favorite treat before you leave.

Your dog starts to cough, wheeze, or is having a hard time breathing. Could it be #asthma or something else? It's helpful to know what symptoms to look for, and know what to do when your pet has an asthma attack. Can my dog or cat get asthma? Yes! Both cats and dogs can suffer from this health condition. It is typically seen in smaller, middle-aged dogs such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Maltese's. Asthma in cats is the most commonly diagnosed respiratory disorder. How do I know if my pet has asthma? Symptoms in dogs and cats are very similar to those in humans, such as: 💙 Difficulty breathing 💙 Excessive panting 💙 Breathing with wide mouth 💙 Coughing 💙 Wheezing 💙 Increased swallowing 💙 Hunched body with extended neck 💙 Mucous build up If your dog or cat is having an asthma attack they may seem like they are unable to calm down, or panicked. Their tongue and gums may turn blue, when they are normally pink, which is a lack of oxygen. If you see this symptom you will need to seek an emergency veterinarian right away. What can cause asthma in my cat or dog? 🔺 Pollen 🔺 Household cleaners 🔺 Mold, Mildew, or dust mites 🔺 Pollution 🔺 Tobacco smoke, cigars, pipes, or vapes 🔺 Dusty kitty litter To diagnose your pet with asthma the doctor would do a full physical exam, listen to their heart and lungs, and may even order lab work, radiographs, or other tests to help determine the diagnosis. There are different ways the doctor may recommend to help treat asthma in pets. One way would prescribing medications or steroids to help open and decrease inflammation in the airways.
