How to Make Super Nutrient Agar Plates for Mycology. North Spore

This recipe for super nutrient agar plates is great for propagating mushroom mycelium. Combining honey, light malt extract and potato water makes for a power house of nutrients. I use different agar formulations from time to time to keep the mycelium from getting bored of the same old food. So if I have mycelium that seems to have slowed down, I transfer it to this high nutrient agar to rejuvenate.

Recipe for 1 liter of super nutrient agar solution (40 Plates):

1TBS of raw honey
8 grams of LME
4 small potatoes
20 grams agar agar powder
Distilled water (Final Volume 1 Liter)

You may cut the ingredients in half if you want to make 20 plates instead of 40.

The NocBox by North Spore is a great option to pour the agar plates in, it keeps the air still to protect your work. It's super easy to set up using the provided tent poles and I love the portability. It's like a lab you can take with you anywhere! It has arm holes with ties and zipper openings to bring in large items like substrate. Testing Calm Wind Laminar Flow Hood for Mycology

I tested this laminar flow hood and the results were great! I really love the side panels and the built in light. The price being only $239 is a great deal for the quality. It has 2 fans at the top instead of one big blower motor which I thought was interesting, it gets the job done though!

The company said replacement filters will soon be available on the amazon listing. The filter needs to be replaced at least every 6 months.

I found these tiny reishi mushroom antlers growing on top of my jars of honey water!

The ability of various mushroom species to grow on liquid is fascinating to me and always a pleasant surprise.

To make the jar all I did was add 1 tablespoon of honey to a jar with 600 ml of water and pressure cook at 15 psi for 30 minutes. Once the jars were cooled down I inoculated them with reishi mushroom liquid culture and set them on a shelf in a warm room. I left them untouched for a few months and the reishi antlers started growing all by themselves, without a solid substrate!

How to Grow Mushroom Mycelium with Potatoes

Potato water is a nutrient rich medium that works well for growing mushroom mycelium because it contains key compounds that support fungal growth. Potato water contains starch and simple sugars that serve as an energy source for mycelium. As the potatoes are boiled, starches break down into smaller, more accessible sugars like glucose, which the mycelium can metabolize to fuel growth and development. Potatoes also release important vitamins and minerals into the water like Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Vitamin C.

Potato water can also be used when making agar plates which makes this a convenient and cost effective ingredient.

How to Collect Spores from Lion's Mane Mushrooms

Lion's mane mushroom has white spores which start dropping when the tendrils elongate. The spores are hard to see until there is a massive amount of them on the foil.

I took advantage of the experiment I was running which was growing lions mane in a grow tent with no electricity, so there was no added humidity or air currents to disrupt the spore deposit.

I harvested 27 spore prints which I can use to start fresh cultures of lions mane whenever I want for many years. This method was fun and easy. If the fruit becomes so big that the foil doesn't fit under, I use some makeshift risers to raise the block up.

Here's the full lions mane experiment video I posted the day before this: https://youtu.be/1MXDPgjvcPc?si=0MBY3qbPCbvSIL_i

Growing Lions Mane Mushrooms in Complete Darkness Without Environmental Controls

In this experiment I fruited 30 lions mane mushroom blocks in a grow tent without turning on the humidity system, exhaust system, temperature control or lights.

The temperature outside was around 40F at night and 65-F during the day. The building the grow tent was in also had no temperature controls. It is a stone factory building that feels like a cave.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the lions mane grew in these conditions, I suspected a little deformity but the fruits look absolutely perfect. I sliced the blocks on October 15th and harvested the mushrooms on November 11th.

Another important note I want to add is that these fruiting blocks were made from grain to grain transfer propagation technique. I used one 3lb bag of colonized grain to inoculate 12 new bags of sterilized grain and then I used most of that grain spawn to inoculate all those blocks. The mycelium obviously had no problem with this expansion which is impressive.

11/13/2024

A laminar flow hood is the most useful piece of equipment you can use for mycology and growing mushrooms at home. It creates a sterile workspace that prevents contamination of mushroom cultures.

The blower motor on top brings air into the box which is forced through the HEPA filter creating a stream of sterile air over the working area in front of the flow hood.

A clean room grade laminar flow hood can cost thousands of dollars and shipping is usually $300 so making your own flow hood is more affordable.

I have used a clean room grade flow hood and this homemade flow hood for many years and haven’t noticed a difference in performance between the two.

I just posted a tutorial video for the build here: https://youtu.be/ZYCbFbcPpM0?si=PswZJlepxzoxuVJa

Check the description of the video to find the parts list and measurements.

11/13/2024

This laminar flow hood build helped me level up my game years ago and now I am sharing it with you!

I recommend buying 1/2 inch MDF particle board. One 4 x 8ft sheet and one 2 x 4ft sheet (It costs around $70 at Home Depot).

Use a table saw to cut 5 squares from the MDF sheets. Here are the measurements:

Top/Bottom panels: 25.5" x 24"
Side panels: 25" x 25.5"
Back panel: 24" x 24"

Compatible HEPA Filter: https://amzn.to/3USU9yL
Compatible Blower Motor: https://amzn.to/3OaIHdW

Once all the panels are cut the hardest part is over. Construct the box as seen in the video and use silicone to cover any gaps. Wire up the blower motor and it's ready to use!

It's easy to build a pre filter box around the blower motor but it is not absolutely necessary, my first flow hood didn't have one and it worked perfect for years.

Total project cost is around $500 which was a life saver when I was starting out considering the shipping cost for such a large/heavy item.

The cold weather in the morning can freeze a growing mushroom but it can resume growing if temperatures increase in the afternoon. I planted these wine cap mushrooms a few months ago and harvested a bunch but left a few to continue growing.

It has started to frost in the mornings here in Michigan which froze this baby wine cap mushroom solid. The temperature increased in the afternoons for the past few days allowing this mushroom to thaw and continue growing. The ultimate goal of the mushroom is to open its cap and release spores. It’s fascinating how mushrooms have evolved over millions of years to withstand harsh conditions such as this.
