Red-eared slider

-They are common pets and are widely available in stores across the world. They can grow to a length of 11.6 inches (30 cm), with females being bigger than males.

Dark green with some yellow coloring makes up their body. Two red spots on the sides of its head are, however, its most defining characteristic and the source of its name.

This variety of turtle, which can live in both water and on land, has a shell that is slightly angled from the bottom up to its body.

This turtle is semi-aquatic. They are simple to see in southern US waterways, namely the Mississippi River.

African Helmeted Turtle

-The little, side-necked African helmeted turtle can be found in Yemen in western Asia as well as all of sub-Saharan Africa.

This semi-aquatic species, also called "crocodile turtle" and "marsh terrapin," can be found in both permanent and ephemeral bodies of water, but prefers standing water, such as lakes, swamps, and rain puddles over rivers.

Along with other well-known African creatures like crocodiles, warthogs, hippopotamuses, buffalos, and rhinos, the African helmeted turtle lives in the same ecosystem. It has been proven in recent years that some of these larger mammals gain advantages from the turtles eating the parasites off of their bodies.

The African helmeted turtle lacks a hinged plastron, which prevents it from being able to close its plastron and enclose its head and front limbs like other Pelomedusidae members can.

Malaysian Box Turtle

-The Southeast Asian box turtle, commonly referred to as the Amboina box turtle, has a local subspecies called Malaysian Box turtles. Regions of Indochina, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, are home to this specific subspecies. The Malaysian Box Turtle prefers warm, humid climates with tropical habitats. Compared to other Southeast Asian Box turtles, they have dark brown shells with less black spot markings. Additionally, compared to their relatives, Malaysian Box turtles have smaller, shorter tails. Although these turtles can endure some very harsh environments, they are sadly endangered. Box turtles from Malaysia are omnivores, though older animals tend to consume more plant material.

Chinese Box Turtle (Yellow-Margined Box Turtle)

The Chinese box turtle is an endangered Asiatic box turtle native to China, Taiwan, and Japan. This species is also known as the Yellow-margined box turtle, shìshéguī (which translates to snake-eating turtle), or Golden-headed turtle.

Although this is a hardy turtle, which is quite easy to care for, it is endangered. As such, they are not easy to find. This semi-aquatic turtle spends as much time in water as it will out of water. It is essential that the turtle enclosure is 50% aquatic and 50% terrestrial.

Sea Turtle

Seven different species of sea (or marine) turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle and the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. While these highly migratory species periodically come ashore to either bask or nest, sea turtles spend the bulk of their lives in the ocean. WWF's work on sea turtles focuses on five of those species: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, and olive ridley.

Philippine Forest Turtle

The Philippine forest turtle (Siebenrockiella leytensis), which is found only on the Filipino island of Palawan, has a unique history. First described as a species in 1920, only two specimens were known to exist, and no more could be found by herpetologists until 1988 when one more specimen was discovered. Due to the lack of available specimens, scientists feared that the species was extinct until 2001 when herpetologists surveying Palawan discovered populations of the turtle living there. These scientists soon realized that the original specimens discovered in the 1920s were erroneously described as originating from the island of Leyte. Thus, the efforts to locate the species over the past 80 years, which were conducted exclusively on Leyte, had been futile since the species actually lived on Palawan.

Ornate Diamondback Terrapin

This brightly colored species has a shell patterned with black or near-black and yellow. Its pale body forms a stark contrast with the carapace, and the tiny blackish dots add some visual interest.
Florida is known for unique aquatic creatures, and the ornate diamondback terrapin is one. This lovely turtle is a subspecies of the diamondback terrapin. Though its diamond-like carapace patterning is memorable, the ridges on its carapace may be even more so.

Roti Island Snake-Necked Turtle

The Roti Island snake-necked turtle is a weird turtle indeed. It is critically endangered, and can only be found on Rote Island, Indonesia. Collection for the pet trade due to it’s desirable appearance had devastating affects for this turtles population. They have now become illegal to collect in order to try and protect this species. Outside of collection by humans there are few natural threats to this species. There are some reports of predation by feral pigs and loss of habitat, but illegal capture and trade remain the primary threat to the stability of the population.

The shell of the Roti island snake-necked turtle are on average 7.1 – 9.4 inches in length, and has a colour of pale grey brown. The plastron of the turtle (the underneath of the shell) is a pale white colour. The neck of the snake (which is nearly as long as the shell, and resembles the body of a snake) is a dark brown grey on top, and a light beige underneath. Their eyes are a black iris surrounded by a bright white ring.

This rather prickly looking chap lives in the Amazon rainforest, near streams. You don’t need anyone to tell you why or indeed how it got its name because it is a handle with care kind of a tortoise and those spikes really are needle sharp.
