We have a very sad announcement to make, and while we knew the day would one day come, we never wanted to have to face it, yet here we are.
Our wonderful beloved dog Destiny has traveled to the rainbow bridge along side her son Beethoven.
Now if you think it's a coincidence that her name is Destiny and the rescue is Pets of Destiny, you are wrong as the rescue is indeed named after this wonderful girl.
I would like to share our story.
14 years ago I was finally in a position I could finally get a dog. I was on a mission. I wanted a small, male purse dog. Keeping an eye out on all the pages I could think of.
After about a week of searching I saw an AD on craigslist.
" unwanted litter, $30 each. First come first serve, no holds"
That was it. My gut told me to go. So, hubby and I jumped in the car and took off for an hour drive not knowing what kind of dogs we would be looking at or if there would even be any left!
When we arrived, I was surprised to find out we were the first to show up.
They were all running around the front yard playing.
Andy scooped up the first pup that ran by and handed it to me saying " here, check this one out"
My goodness, puppies. Just so cute. Full of kisses. After taking a closer look, he handed me a girl.
Well shucks, I really wanted a boy and I could tell these were defiantly not purse dogs. I set the pup down to check out the other siblings who at this point had all run into the bushes in the front of their house.
This little pup I had just been holding made 2 tight circles and curled up on my feet and fell asleep.
I couldn't believe it. I didn't pick a dog, she picked me.
I gave them their $30 and off we went with our new family member.
The whole way home we were talking about names and nothing seem to fit until I had a sudden light bulb moment.
Everything that day lined up so perfectly that lead me directly to her, almost as if Destiny it self had paved the path.
And that's how she got her name.
A year later we had a whoopsy with our roommates husky Draco. He was scheduled to be neutered and it was just a little too late. He had impregnated Destiny who then had a whopping 12 babies.
11 survived and she was such a wonderful mother.
All babies except 2 went to family and friends.
We kept Beethoven and Shadow.
Now Shadow sadly passed last year after having a sudden onset of medical issues that had no cure and it made it no longer safe for her to be around the other dogs, and could have potentially escalated to us as well. ( vet concluded either doggy Dementia or a brain tumor but she wasn't recognizing her own family and had sudden snaps of being aggressive)
Sadly Beethoven was extremely close to his sister so he hasn't quite been the same since, but with his mom around, he has grown closer to her in the absence of his sister.
This is part of the reason we had discussed having them leaving this earthly world together.
We are so lucky to have Destiny outlive her breeds life expectancy by 2.5 years. She has been an amazing little soul. Absolutely adores anyone and everyone.
Every single stranger she meets, she welcomes them with a "Destiny" happy dance and a wagging tail. She has been out little angel and soon to be a real angel which she so rightfully has earned.
When I started the rescue and picked the name, I thought back on that day I met my first doggy daughter. How true Destiny brought us together. And that's what I want to help others do.
Find their true Destiny family members. Whether it be a rat, Ferret, rabbit, dog, cat, bird ect.
If we don't have any available, we have outreach to other who might!
Please take a moment to keep Destiny ( and Beethoven) in your thoughts. She has been such an amazing part of so many peoples lives that she has met. ( Beethoven is absolutely amazing too, don't read this section the wrong way. He just wasn't as stranger/people oriented. If he didn't know you, he was very shy where as Destiny would come to horror conventions with us and meet celebrities and such because that WAS her jam!)
And if you would like to make a donation to Pets of Destiny in honor of our wonderful girl, we would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.
