How intelligent are dogs?
Do they only respond to repeated events because they’re pattern-oriented?
No, in fact they’re way more observant than that.
I do the exact same morning routine every day. Get up, get ready & dressed, feed & water the birds, let my boys out, let fosters / boarders out, clean up, come in, take my medications, then I will go to the restroom and grab my things and leave.
By the time I’m taking my meds - my boys begin to get antsy. They start talking to me, stretching and yawning and getting more bouncy. Because they know that when I grab my things, my keys and wallet - they get a cookie as I leave.
UNLESS! I stay in my sweats.
Yep. My dogs recognize the clothing that I wear as either leaving clothes, or staying home clothes.
I do nothing different! The point at which they begin to get excited is not at the end of my “leaving for the day” moments. It’s in the middle of finishing things up - which I still do all of when I’m in my sweats or “staying home” clothes.
Dogs are WAY more intelligent than people have given them credit for.
And here I’ve been for years telling people that dogs understand much more complicated situations. That they understand human language (and even that is being backed by science finally) and the complexity of humans better than we ever thought.
Dogs are amazing.
