Dogs are a great equalizer. They don’t care if you’re wealthy, poor, mentally stable, or insane. They’ll love you just the same.
They’ll p*e on your carpets in Beverly Hills or the Bronx. They’ll bite a small child or criminal if the circumstance is right.
Dogs don’t need expensive training collars, doggy daycares, interactive toys, or soft beds. They are pretty simple creatures. Humans make the relationship complicated.
Your dog needs to be a dog.
Digging. Chasing. Chewing. That’s it.
Don’t overthink it.

Put your dog in situations where they have to use their brain. Teach them how to problem solve and their life will be a lot less stressful. I love playgrounds for dogs. Lots of different textures and heights.

Every good dog trainer has a small useless dog that has zero training but goes everywhere with them. Take Miso for example, she doesn’t even know how to sit on command but is an exceptional hiking companion.

Enjoy your dog. In the grand scheme of things the behavioral issues you think everyone is silently judging you about isn’t true.
When your dog is no longer with you you’re going to remember the hikes, the walks, the coffee shops visited, and them sleeping next to you.
You’re going to remember them being happy to see you.
You’re going to remember the quiet moments you had together.
Those sweet moments you didn’t even think to take a photo because you were so in the moment. Photos never do that moment justice anyway.
You and your dog chose each other. Our dogs teach us about ourselves.
Enjoy your dog. We’re here to learn from each other.

In case your wondering what a dog looks like when uncomfortable… this photo is a good example.

Most dogs are unbelievably tolerant with our canine social skill stupidity. Dogs do not go around “hugging” one another around the neck unless they want to fight.

This is the reason most kids get bit by dog while hugging them and the “bite came out of nowhere!” On average little girls between 3yrs - 10yrs get bit by dogs more than boys in the same age bracket.

How can I tell this dog is uncomfortable?
1. Whites of the eyes are visible. Dead giveaway. Dogs will go “whale eyed” and just stare when in a situation they can’t get away from.

2. Stiff body language. The dog does not look relaxed and is essentially bracing with wide legs. Dogs that want to be pet/loved on have a tendency to lean into you.

3. Ears pinned back. A dog who has his ears pinned back is fearful or timid in that situation and uncomfortable.

These are some signs of a dog who’s in an uncomfortable position he doesn’t want to be in. Pet owners typically interpret this as “he loves kids!” and are shocked when the dog nips or bites. Dogs are usually euthanized due to user error.

Be respectful of your dogs space and teach children how to interact with dogs fairly. Dogs are sentient beings and not toys for human entertainment.

Learn basic canine body language, be a fantastic leader, and you will have an animal that will follow you to the end of the earth.
