Important PSA‼️

Whether you are a professional groomer, kennel owner, boarding facility, vet technician, or any other pet professional, canine etiquette is crucial. Even pet owners and pet lovers need to understand the basics.
1. First and foremost, always ask owner permission. There are many reasons an owner may not want you to pet their dog. Maybe their dog doesn't like people. Maybe he is a working dog who would be distracted. Whatever the reason, always respect owners wishes and don't take it personally.
2. Don't approach a dog head on. Canines can perceive this as a threat. Rather approach from a sideways curve.
3. Don't squeal or make other loud noises. Contain your excitement as this too can be a perception of threat or even prey mode. Canine hearing is much more sensitive than our own.
4. Leaning over the top of a dog is a sign of dominance and could be perceived as a threat. Always keep your body positioned so that you are not leaning or towering over the dog.
5. Do not stick your hand in a canines face. This is a misnomer that has been flouted around for quite some time, but it is a dangerous tactic. Dogs can smell you just fine from a distance so there is no need for you to stick your hand to their face which once again can be perceived as a threat.
6. Never stare directly into the face when meeting a dog. This is perceived as both a threat and a challenge. Rather give the dog 'side eye' and look away. This is perceived as a calming signal. You can still see the dog just fine without staring directly.
7. Never, ever force interaction. This can cause fear biting as the dog is being forced into a situation that may cause confusion and/or fear. As difficult as it may be for you, you must always allow the dog to choose whether or not to interact. This will most likely be based upon proper etiquette. If the dog chooses not to interact, again don't take it personally.
8. Never attempt to hug or kiss no matter how cute they are. Dogs may feel trapped leading to biting.
While there are certainly dogs out there who love meeting new people, this is not true for all. Most canines need to know that you are not a threat to them before allowing you to pet them.
After all, how would you feel if a stranger came running directly at you, staring you in the face, squealing with their hand out, attempting to hover over you and kiss you? You'd call your dog for help, that's what you'd do 😉
