Y’all know I’m a dog person. I love dogs. Golden Retrievers especially. I DO NOT think you should ever hurt a dog. Don’t hit them. Period. It will only encourage the behavior you’re trying to make them stop. Dogs need consistency and Golden Retrievers are people dogs, meaning they want to please their owners. Many of you don’t know this but we got Brady at six months old because Trevor’s friend saw his grown son beating him with a chain. He, to this day, freaks out over a chain or leash. He will follow us to the ends of the earth and not run off but he panics over those. We’ve had him for a decade and those six months before us still haunt him. If your dog does not trust you, he will never behave the way you want him to. Read that again. Do not give your dog reason to be afraid for their safety. If they don’t feel safe, they act out and you’ll never have his trust. Magnifying the behavior you’re wanting to stop. Here’s a short article:

People shouldn't hit dogs because it causes physical injury and psychological harm, including fear, anxiety, and aggression, while damaging the bond between a dog and its owner. Instead of teaching a dog what to do, hitting teaches them to be afraid of the person doing the hitting, and it does not effectively correct unwanted behavior in the long term. Positive reinforcement is a more effective and humane training method that builds trust and encourages desired behaviors.
