In Texas, it is illegal to leave pets outdoors in extreme temperatures without proper shelter. The Safe Outdoor Door Act, which became law in 2022, aims to protect dogs from cold weather.
What the law says
Pets must be brought indoors during freezing temperatures
Pets must have access to shelter that protects them from subfreezing temperatures
Pets must not be left outside unattended with a restraint that limits their movement when temperatures are below 32° F
