We are in need of help for Leo our giant mastiff! He's been working really hard every week on his training due to a set back he had (see previous posts on him). But we noticed an issue with his paw and teeth and we need to get that taken care of ASAP. We have listed the estimate we have from our vet. He has adoption applications coming in but he needs to feel good before these meets happen. We have set up a fund on our bio link for him. Anything helps and it's tax deductible.
We also welcome anyone who wants to help pay directly to the vet.
If you have followed Leo's journey you would know he was abused by people who identified as trainers and he deserves all the support.

Remember these puppies we posted a few weeks ago? They had a euthanasia date of August 30, 2024. Unfortunately we were only able to take 2 into our rescue. We had no one volunteer to foster other than Leo's current trainer Xavier from @everyday_pack_leader and Katie @sd.dogrehab
If you have never fostered we understand it can be scary but we promise if you foster with us you are not on your own. We will bring the dog to you along with food, crate, crate cover, bowls, leash, and anything else that you might need. When we bring the dog to you we do a training session with you and thoroughly explain everything and you have access to us at all times if you need us. Remember fostering saves lives. This is a community effort and we need you.
If you are completely unable to foster which we understand there are also other ways you can help. You can share our posts, do a fundraiser for our dogs, and you can also donate. We are a 501c3 nonprofit and all donations are tax deductible.

We need help! These puppies are set to be euthanized August 30. The owner is homeless and lives in his car and can't keep the puppies and has a date set for euthanasia if we can't take them in. We don't have space or funds at the moment for more dogs. Can you help?

Muzzle and Resource Guarding Training with Leo and @everyday_pack_leader
Leo continues to work hard every week. Muzzle training is important to be able to take him to the vet and keep everyone safe. We aren't saying he will always need a muzzle but as he works through his issues this is important to continue to expose him and work him through those moments. Resource guarding is something we know he has and it's very important to teach him impulse control. Why teach impulse control? So Leo can be told to leave it or to not go for it. This is good in case something is dropped that we don't want him getting and avoiding an accident.

Leo has been with our rescue since 2022 after he was abandoned by a trainer here at a San Diego kennel facility. Dogs who come from major trauma from previous trainers/owners take longer because they have to relearn how to trust humans. From extensive trainer trauma, to being injured by another dog, to a hip injury, and going through several homes in a short period of time, we had our work cut out for us with Leo, but he had successfully worked through most of his trauma by October 2023.
Unfortunately in October, we trusted a new trainer, who promised to help us get Leo certified as a service dog. Within two weeks in their care, there was a situation where Leo, through no fault of his own, was severely triggered by another dog who was extremely reactive and attempted to attack Leo. In a moment of extreme fear for his own safety, he reacted and redirected at our trainer/founder, Katie, when she visited to work with him. Although she was bitten, she was able to get Leo to come back from the situation and safely return to his kennel. Unfortunately after this, Leo developed hesitation around Katie handling him on leash. Dogs don’t live in memory like humans, but rather, build associations. Leo had built an association with Katie handling his leash, and fearing for his life because of the presence of the attacking dog in the October incident. Due to the time it takes to undo and rebuild associations, and Leo’s age as a giant breed, we thought that finding another trainer who was capable and willing to act with patience and love, would help him the most, and faster than if Katie did it herself. Finding the right trainer with a rescue mindset was very important for us. It took us a bit, but now we have Xavier helping us with Leo.

It's been a busy week for us from assessing new puppies to continue training with our current dogs and responding to new people who need help.
This week for Leo, Xavier @everyday_pack_leader wanted to check on Leo's resource guarding. Because Xavier is new to working with Leo he wants to assess Leo fully to see what triggers him. This 90 second video shows just a bit of what the training session was. Leo was tethered for safety purposes and was given a treat. Leo was definitely not ok with Xavier near his head while he had the treat, he did give a warning (growl). Xavier then wanted to touch Leo to see his response and we noticed he wasn't as concerned about being pet on his body as he was near his head. This is something we have to work on because if Leo were to go to a home we need to make sure he's ok with someone being around him while he's eating. We aren't saying he needs to accept someone bothering him while he eats, but if someone were to pass close to him while he's eating we need to know he won't trigger and react towards that person. We need to know he can be adopted in a safe way.
Having Xavier working with him also exposes Leo to taking leadership from a male which typically Leo has a problem with. With Leo having been with abusive men trainers it can certainly be a reason why he has a hard time with men. Working with a male trainer can hopefully get Leo more comfortable and feel confident around men and take leadership from them.

Now training with Leo (mastiff/cane corso) is Xavier @everyday_pack_leader in conjunction with our founder and trainer @sd.dogrehab. We know it's been a while since we have posted Leo! After Katie with CRT worked through so much of Leo’s needs last year, he needed to learn how to build trust with men, since he’s been abused by male trainers repeatedly in the past. So we knew we needed to search for a male trainer who has extensive knowledge with dogs who have severe reactivity/ trauma and especially the patience for working with rescues. It took us some time to find someone who we can trust so we are so excited that this is the beginning of Leo training with Xavier!Every dog has a journey and Leo's has been not easy. He has been bounced around so much, and been through so many trainers who saw him only as a challenge to prove themselves and he has suffered because of it. We won't give up on him because we know and have seen that he's so capable of love and he deserves it. Although not everyone can handle a dog like Leo, we know there's someone out there that is meant to be his forever home. He is currently in boarding kennels but unlike most boarding facilities he has a positive association because he trusts the kennel owners and they walk him and play with him in the yards there. Morgan has gone into a foster to adopt home as a service dog🐕🦺 and we couldn't be happier for her! Morgan not only will have a home but she will be going to work every day in an office setting. Her dream came true to be with her person all day!
Her new dad previously had a pitty as a service dog until his dog recently passed. He shared with us he hadn't been ready until now to bring another dog home. We have been getting updates on her and we couldn't be happier to see her doing so well and getting the individual attention we know she has been wanting for such a long time.
Also a BIG thank you to the people that donated towards her heavy duty mat that she now uses at work! (last picture)

Part of our rescue mission is education. We believe that if our future generations learn about animal behavior at a young age they can make a difference a lot sooner. Dog rescue currently is at an all time high of dogs needing help unlike prior years. We get many calls/emails every day of people trying to relinquish their dogs due to behavior issues. Learning about dog behavior is so important not only to understand our own animals but to also help them in case behavior issues develop. If we can understand their behavior then we can help them and not reach a point in which we give them up. A dog with behavior issues is euthanized at a faster rate and justified because they become a threat to people. Most dogs that have behavior issues come from a place of fear, insecurity, or even worst trauma/abuse. We hope with education these dogs will have people more willing to take a chance on.
Here you will see an amazing high school senior working with us as part of her internship. Katie is teaching her with a dog that has finished their board and train program the proper way to walk a dog to avoid leash pulling. We are so happy to have her learning with us because we know that she will do great things in the future!
