Earlier this week a Good Samaritan found a kitten, so tiny and cold they thought she was dead. She was emaciated and covered in fleas.

They rushed her to ER to have her warmed up and tested for a few different viruses, and they took her home.

But the next night she was weak and cold again, and went back to the ER.

She was anemic, hypoclycemic, and hypothermic, and its chances were poor, and the thought on all parties was that euthanasia was the best option.

But the ER doctor reached out to Smittens, and against our better judgment we agreed to take her into rescue and hospitalize her temporarily to see if a little boost of glucose and fluids and warmth would get her through.

One day became 4 days in the ICU, and a team of specialists became involved in little “Maki’s” care 24/7.

One of our volunteers even brought in their kitty, a retired blood donor, to donate a tiny amount of blood for 2 blood transfusions!

After 3 days, glucose CRIs, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, constant testing and monitoring, little Maki has finally turned a corner!

We honestly didn’t think she’d make it, but we wanted to try.

Her bill is approaching $4K and we can only take in kittens like this with your support!

✨Amaretta Success Story✨

Last week we posted Amaretta’s story, asking you all to share it and help her get adopted. Thanks to everyone, the social media community pulled through and her adopter found her on Instagram!! 😱 This doesn’t always happen, but we are so happy that she found her furrever home ❤️

Amaretta (now Sofia Marie) is now loving life! Here is what her adopter has said:

Sofia Maria aka Amaretta has settled right in.
Today she helped me measure the spot for her new cat tree, in the interim she is using my knitting table😜 to view the flowers birds butterflies and lizards in the garden.
Last night I put her toys away in the basket before going to bed and she immediately took them out again.
She occasionally asks me to pick her up but only long enough to see what I’m doing She sleeps with me most of the night, and gives me a sunrise news commentary every morning!
Thank you for bringing her into my life❤️

Success stories like this are the reason why we keep doing what we do. Sofia Marie was rescued in a hoarding situation and now she is getting ALL of the love and attention she deserves! We are so happy for you, congratulations and good job Sofia Marie!! 🙌

Last night, foster kitten Baguette passed away.

Baguette and his family (Paris and her croissants) were pulled from a high kill shelter last Thursday and brought to us because they were on the Euthanize list. They all had a URI, but we were hopeful they would all make a full recovery.

Baguette’s siblings began recovering and eating on their own — but Baguette just was not interested in eating. He received Sub Q fluids twice and was syringe fed. With all of these treatments he seemed stable, but he kept losing weight.

Yesterday afternoon his energy level dropped significantly. Another volunteer observed his behavior and checked his temperature and we received the worst news - Baguette was fading. Baguette was immediately taken to VSH.

On the ride over, the fosters knew he was not going to make it. He began to hemorrhage in his foster’s hands and fought to live with every breath. He made it to VSH and the staff got him into the ER quickly, but he was too far gone. It was decided to humanely euthanize him. He was in so much pain, and he knew it was his time. His fosters went to see him and gave him a kiss on the head. They stayed with him until the end.

In the aftermath, we found that Baguette’s days were numbered before we received him. He was too weak to overcome what he was going through. His fosters gave him a warm and loving home for the final week of his life. If they hadn’t given him a chance, he would have been euthanized on a cold metal table with his family. In the end, Baguette passed with dignity.

Mama Paris and the rest of her babies have made a huge recovery, they’re not out of the woods yet but they’re 85% there! We rescued this little family to give them the best shot at life. Although Baguette’s time was limited, his family can thrive. We love and miss you little guy ❤️

We can’t thank all of the volunteers who came together to help him! Animal rescue is truly a team effort and we can’t do it without everyone’s help.

PUMPKIN UPDATE:
The PU surgery done by Dr. Chu and his surgery team at VSH seems to be going flawlessly; it's only been a week but Pumpkin is making a seamless recovery ❤️‍🩹

Huge thanks to Dr. Westerback, Dr. Hoshi, Dr. Press, Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Halpern, and SO MANY TECHNICIANS there are too many to name, all part of Pumpkin's team who worked round the clock on his care for this outcome.

Pumpkin still has a long recovery, and a lifetime of a prescription urinary diet, but we hope he is out of the woods 🤞

Today he explored the foster's home for the first time and found out how many things he cannot do with the cone, including drinking out of the toilet, and crawling under the bed!

🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP! 🚨

Pumpkin is a 1 yo male kitty who came into the ER with a urinary obstruction.
The owners were given a $4-5K estimate for unblocking and hospitalization, and Pumpkin would need to be on a urinary diet for life.
They opted to euthanize him rather than pay for the treatment, so Smittens stepped in and took him on as a relinquishment and paid for his care.

The unblocking procedure was difficult but his kidney values came down in hospital and he did well.

Unfortunately when his urinary catheter was pulled over 48 hours later he immediately re-blocked, so it was decided he would undergo a PU that day (a Perianal Urethrostomy), a surgical procedure that lengthens and shortens the urethra of male cats ensuring that they will likely not block ever again.

The surgery went well and Pumpkin is now in a foster home for recovery.

From start to finish, Smittens has put $7K into Pumpkin's hospitalization and procedures, and cannot do it alone!
Any amount donated makes a huge difference to a kitty like Pumpkin, and to our efforts to keep taking on medical cases like this, who we believe deserve a chance ❤️

Archie how it started, and how it’s going. Today, Archie was adopted and found his furrever family 🏡

Archie had really rough beginnings. He was found with a HUGE gash on his neck and brought to the who found him and fixed him up. Because he was FIV+ and the stigma attached to it made it hard for them to help him get adopted, we took him in because we knew we could help him find a good home.

Archie stayed with us for some time and made friends with all of the volunteers who met him! His time finally came and he found his furrever home today. Congratulations Archie!!! We love you ❤️

A huge thanks to everyone who helped to find Archie, take him in, all of the volunteers at and the vet and team who fixed him up, and the volunteers with us who fostered and took care of him at the adoption center. Animal rescue is truly a team effort and we can’t do it without everyone’s support ❤️

Illegal to abandon cats (Sb 1459)

The Senate Appropriations Committee will vote on whether to take SB 1459 out of suspension on Thursday, May 16.

If you think CA animal shelters should help find abandoned cats homes (instead of putting them in street in hopes they may find a home in their own) , please call the Appropriations Committee members TODAY to express strong opposition.

➡️ Despite Senator Nguyen's claim that SB 1459 increases shelter transparency, the bill in reality enables bad shelters to DECEIVE the public.

This is how: Shelters cannot euthanize cats they already dumped. That enables bad shelters to deviously claim to be "no-kill," when all they are doing is abandoning cats to suffer and die in horrific ways without care outside. Yet SB 1459 includes NO requirement that shelters disclose to the public how many cats they abandon! Meanwhile, shelters do not need to lift a finger to help the cats find a home or rescue - they just release them and take credit for being "no-kill."

We know these posts aren’t fun to see. They’re equally not fun for us to make. But if we don’t talk about pregnant spay terminations, folks won’t see the incredible need for it.
Nearly every female coming through our clinics right now is pregnant. In a couple of weeks, they will all be lactating meaning they have given birth. And in a couple of months, their kittens will come through our clinics and have to be released back outside after spay/neuter because all of the rescues will be full.

And the cycle will just keep coming through our doors. But thankfully for each pregnant cat who makes it through our doors, their life will drastically change for the better.

We also have an alarming rate of pregnancy birthing complication requests for help coming into organizations. These often result in the female passing away if emergency help is not received.

💜Female cats do not want to be pregnant. Their bodies force them to go into heat.
💜Female cats do not know they have had their pregnancy terminated. They do not mourn.
💜Spaying pregnant cats is humane.
💜The fetuses do not suffer
💜For every pregnant cat who is allowed to give birth, kittens who are already suffering on the streets lose out on those precious foster and adoptive homes.

Every pregnant cat MUST be spayed.
