Rescue case update: Judy & Max
The senior bonded pair of Bassets we mentioned in Rocky’s post arrived to their forever home all the way to Colorado last week 🐶🐶🐾 We’re happy that we were able to help them out 🙏🏻❤️
Here’s a bit of their history:
We went to pick them up a couple of weeks ago. Their names are Judy (now known as Juju) & Max. We were told Judy is 10yo and Max 12yo. They're a bonded pair, they have been together for 7 years (Judy was 3yo when this family adopted her and Max was a puppy) so we placed them in adoption together. The surrender reason we were given is that the family is going through a divorce situation and no one was able to keep the dogs. They also tried to rehome them themselves for some time but didn’t find anyone interested, unfortunately.
As you all know, the Beagle is the breed we specialize in, but we love all kind of dogs, and Hounds are just very special for us. We’ve rescued about 25 Basset Hounds and other Hound breeds / Hound mixes in the past 2 years, the rest have been Beagles (I haven’t count all the Beagles we’ve rescued yet but I estimate they have been at least 75 in the last 3 years!).
All have been successfully adopted in great homes and their lives have changed immensely, plus we have made all these families happy, a few families have also reached out to adopt again. Helping dogs in need has been very rewarding for us, that’s why we have been actively involved in rescuing.
However, this was the first time that we’ve received a bonded pair of 10+ years old, and as you may know, finding a good home for a senior dog can be hard, and even harder, to find a good home that would adopt 2 senior dogs at the same time.
With all this being said, we did find a great adopter that offered to adopt both of them, however, we needed to pay for the majority of their vet bills to make this happen, which was the vet care protocol we do when we receive a dog (wellness exam, vaccines, deworming, microchipping, dental cleaning / spay/neuter when needed, flex4 and f***l tests, flea/tick/heartworm prevention…).
The adopter offered to of course, give them both a good home, and to cover all the post-adoption expenses plus the transport costs to drive them to Colorado, which is where she lives. She already owned another senior Basset, so we understood that taking 2 more senior dogs was a huge commitment in every way, she wanted Judy & Max to have a safe home for the rest of their lives and so did we. We were very grateful for this offer, so we worked together to help making this possible.
As many of you have seen, we don’t ask for donations for our rescues, how it works when receive a rescue dog is that we cover all their needs from our own funds and when they’re adopted, the dog’s expenses are covered with the adoption fees, for the most part, usually stuff like the food and other foster expenses in general are covered by us, and sometimes we go further than that, like when they need meds, or an additional surgery, for example, we recently covered over $500 for an inguinal hernia surgery that a rescue required, additionally from the vet care the dog needed to become adoptable, which we don’t mind helping financially when we can, as long as the dog goes to a good home.
We don’t have a facility or anything like that, all are fostered in our own home and we typically only receive 1-5 dogs max. So, so far we really hadn’t had the need to ask for donations aside from the adoption fees (we just did it once before to fund for transportation to OR for another bonded older pair of Beagles who btw are thriving in their forever home!). But in this case we could use some extra help with the vet bills of this sweet senior bonded pair. We didn’t want them to loose a good adoption opportunity due to a financial factor.
We took them to the groomer the 2nd day we received them, they had very long nails and were dusty and very smelly, ears were very dirty, it’s been windy lately and they were sleeping outdoors in a dog house. So they clearly needed help and we couldn’t leave them behind. We really wanted them to be in a warm and loving home before the holidays. We promised their adopter that we were going to post about their case to hopefully receive some help funding for their Vet care to make their adoption possible.
We also reached out for help with them to a Basset Hound rescue, I had an idea of helping them mutually, but didn’t receive any response. I don’t blame them though, I understand that other rescues are also overloaded with dogs and vet bills, so we decided to go for it and help them ourselves.
Of course, we’re not hoping to recover all their rescue expenses, we knew upfront that it was going to be a challenge rescuing them but anything would help since we currently have other rescues that we’re in the process of vetting as well, plus any future rescues we may receive this month, after the ones we have are adopted.
If it’s within your possibilities and would like to contribute with this rescue case we’ll all appreciate it. Dog food donations would also be very helpful for our rescues. Hounds eat like champs! LOL
