July 4th with Your Pets
The Fourth of July is an American holiday filled with celebrations with friends, barbecues, and of course fireworks! Although this is a fun filled day to enjoy with your pets, it can also create some fear responses in both dogs and cats.
Luckily, there are some things you can do to make sure you and your pets have a safe and fun holiday before, during and after the fireworks.
Before the Festivities and Fireworks
Prior to the fireworks, be sure all your pet identification tags are up to date as well as their microchip contact information. If you’re the type of pet parent who takes off their collars at home have your pet wear their collar that day. Even when you take all the precautions to keep your pet home and safe, if an accident does occur, you’ll be ready. Besides, it is always a good idea to make sure all their information is up to date, why not make the 4th of July their scheduled annual update.
During the Festivities and Fireworks
Although it can be tempting to feed your pet foods intended for people during the BBQ’s avoid it. There are some foods that seem harmless but can be toxic or a choking hazard for your pet. Check this list created by the American Veterinary Medical Association for some foods to avoid.
Also keep in mind the summer temperatures can be dangerous for your pets if you are outside be sure to provide shade and water for your pets and as always never leave your pet in a parked car.
After the food and fun, be prepared for the fireworks. Pets will need a safe quiet space at home where they can be away from the noise. You can have a television on or music playing to help drown out the loud noises and boom sounds. For some additional tips, visit the Humane Society.
After the Festivities and Fireworks
Locate your pets to check on them. Cuddle and give them some additional attention. Be sure to make sure there aren’t any leftover items from the BBQ that could be in the yard such as alcohol, scraps, or kabob sticks. Most importantly enjoy the holiday, you were prepared, and your pets are safe and happy.
