One picture is before Taco’s treadmill session…and one picture is after his 45 min treadmill session this afternoon…can you guess which picture is which??

When he’s anxious, he’s looking for things to occupy his mind, his body is stiff and he sits just staring at things from my balcony.

After helping him shed some of that anxiety with a great 45 min treadmill session, he’s happy to lay down with his eyes closed, and finally relax on my balcony for the first time in 5 days!!

Now that’s one fulfilled dog!!!

So proud of you Taco!!

Taco is here for a board and train and he’s learning a lot!! Gotta love my Poms in the background observing.

He’s a sweet, sensitive and excitable boy that hasn’t been taught manners. His dad has had him for a few months and it’s clear Taco’s previous family showered him with love, but didn’t balance that love with any rules or boundaries, so Taco struggles with self-control, invading people’s space and knowing how to relax.

I’m treadmill training him and given he’s very sensitive, we are taking it slow. To a dog, especially a sensitive dog, the ground moving means an earthquake, so asking Taco to ignore those instincts and stay on the treadmill is challenging for him. I’ll post the video after it’s edited.

We are working on things to help Taco learn how to relax, so lots of Place training, teaching him to wait for me to release him to eat, waiting at thresholds, teaching leash pressure, and one of my favorite things, doggy massages when he’s been a good boy.

I’ve used a slip leash with Taco, but his fur is so healthy and shiny, the slip leash instantly slips down to the base of his neck (which renders it ineffective to communicate) so I’m desensitizing him to a head harness that will be easier for his dad to use. A head harness can be a “set it and forget it” tool, while a slip leash can need constant repositioning on some dogs.

It’s mornings like this that help make my heart full…teaching a dog how to relax and just enjoy the So Cal life!

This is what Sundays are made for…morning snuggle time while I drink my green tea. It looks like I only have one dog, but Coconut likes to burrow under the covers, so I lifted up the blanket to make sure he was still in there!

My boys have learned that when they wait for me to invite them into my personal space, they get to enjoy some snuggle time. It took a few months to teach them that good things happen when they wait calmly for permission.

I’m such a lucky girl enjoying a beautiful Sunday morning in So Cal. Life is good!

I received the best present from Chewy.com that made my heart smile!

When I grabbed the mail, I was a bit confused as I could feel something hard, like a small book in the package, but I didn’t remembered recently ordering anything like that from Chewy.

When I opened the package and saw my sweet lil Coco’s face staring back at me, I giggled out loud!

They had an artist hand paint Coco’s picture from the profile picture I uploaded for Coco’s Chewy profile.

What a wonderful surprise!! Thanks Chewy!!

I love spending evenings on my balcony with my boys. They patiently lay in their bed and watch me write my affirmations, manifestations and the things I’m grateful for. They lay in their bed and relax until I’m done, no matter how long it takes. Dogs offer such amazing support!

Tonight I’m grateful for so many things: amazing friends, amazing family, amazing clients, amazing dogs, amazing adventures…but most of all, I’m grateful for this amazing life.

Save the date!!

Kelly and I are hosting our next Pack Walk on July 30th in Liberty Station.

This pack walk allows dogs to calmly walk together while keeping a lil distance from each other (in the dog world, distance is respect). This is an important part of our walk as some dogs don’t like other dogs or even people invading their space.

When we respect dogs and their personal space, they learn they can trust us. If a dog doesn’t want to be touched, no one should force the dog into that situation.

The progress we’ve seen in some of the dogs over the past few months has been amazing!!

Save the date for our next pack walk!!

We’ve seen some pretty awesome progress with a few of the dogs that have attended the last several pack walks.

After the pack walk, our group does a few exercises to help the dogs learn how to walk calmly by other dogs while following their human’s leadership.

This kind of training and calm environment becomes the foundation for you to practice calm confident leadership with your dog.

With practice, comes progress, so when you are out walking with your dog and run into an off-leash dog, or a human that wants to invade your dog’s space, or you need to step in and prevent a child from hugging your dog without permission…you will have the tools and experience to be successful!

I adopted Coconut from over four years ago. He was surrendered to the shelter as a Pomeranian, but his long ear feathers has always made me wonder if there might be another breed mixed in.

Well…the DNA test says he’s 100% sassy Pom Pom!!! Thank you to Coco’s Auntie Sooty for the test!!

Coco is the sweetest dog, he loves everyone and will happily jump in a strangers lap to give some kisses, if he’s invited.

He’s a back of the pack dog and is very sensitive. Every position in a pack is important, but the back of the pack dogs help alert the pack to noises and danger, so Coco does a great job at letting me know when someone is outside our door.

He is very pack driven and always wants to me with me, so we work on him staying in his place (aka a dog bed) while I move around so he can practice relaxing and being calm without me. If we didn’t practice this, Coco could easily develop separation anxiety when I leave the house.

Coco constantly teaches me how to be a better dog mom and a better dog trainer. He wakes up every morning excited for the new day and happy to be alive…so that’s how I live my life, happy to be alive and excited for the opportunities the new day will bring!

I’m truly living my best life!

I started a new class, Fitness With Fido!

This class is designed to help teach and/or practice your dog’s calmness in a park environment where they might usually get excited.

The class is a combination of humans doing exercises while their dogs practice their Place command, and humans doing exercises with their dogs.

This class will provide a safe and calm place for you and your dog to learn and grow together through movement and dog psychology.

All dogs will be tethered to tie-downs while their humans move around, no unleashed dogs at this class for safety.

Tonight’s class is almost full. I’ll be offering these classes monthly, for now. If the demand grows, we can do them more often.

I never saw myself teaching a class like this…but one of my favorite quotes is “life begins…at the end of your comfort zone”!!!

When you find your joy in life, nothing can stop you!

We had a great pack walk this weekend!

By having two trainers (who both believe in dog psychology) we are able to connect with every person during the pack walk and give them tips and tricks for achieving loose leash walking, or tips on curbing other unwanted behaviors.

There are times, especially in a group class, where loose leash walking might not be achievable with your dog, especially with dogs that have anxiety or are overly excited. In these situations, we have the owner “lock” their hand to their “back pocket”, look straight ahead, take a deep breath and just start walking (with a fairly short lease). Once the dog is able to burn off some energy, we revisit the loose leash walking techniques.

After our pack walk, we did group exercises and worked on people approaching each other as they kept their dogs calm.

Sometimes people will allow their dog to pull them to go greet another dog or person, but excitement in dogs in an unstable state of mind, and some dogs might not want to tolerate that much energy.

By stopping and giving the dogs some distance and time to calm down, we can asses how the dogs feel about having another dog in their social space.

Thank you Kelly ( ) for taking pictures of the group exercise! It’s hard for Kelly and I to take pics when we are teaching, so we appreciate people who are able to capture some of the training!

Kelly and I partner up for our instructional pack walks and will be hosting the walks once a month.

I’m so grateful for this amazing community of people who are committed to learning how to speak their dog’s language!!

With Valentine's Day around the corner, show your dog you love them by fulfilling their mind, body, and spirit!

Join local dog training professionals, Kelly Whelan from Dog Vibes Tribe and Wendi Blanton of Wen's Waggin Tails, for a free (donations accepted) instructional community pack walk at Point Loma Community Park!

Kelly and Wendi will help you resolve on leash behaviors such as reactivity, pulling, and refusal to walk in this 1 hour pack walk in Point Loma.

Please bring your non aggressive dog on a fixed leash (no retractable leads please), some good walking shoes and a positive attitude for this opportunity.

When you arrive, please keep space from other dogs and we ask that you refrain from on leash greeting with other dogs.

Attend at your own risk. You are responsible for your own dog and personal space and by attending, you agree to accept all liability for any/all actions that may occur at this event. If your dog has ever bitten another being, please put a muzzle on your dog. If you are unsure of your dog’s behavior, please put a muzzle on your dog.

This will be a judgement free zone and all are welcome with exception of aggressive dogs.

The event is on Sunday February 12th at 8:30am.

We will meet in the parking lot, near the snack bar and each dog will receive a free Valentine's Day bandana.

We look forward to seeing you!

You know it’s gonna be a great day when you wake up to a beautiful rainbow outside your window!!

Some of the most beautiful things can only show themselves after they have weathered a storm.

For me, and I hope for you too…it’s not about being perfect, it’s about the progress and the journey I get to live and experience every day!

I know more than I did yesterday, and I’m excited to see what I learn today and what I will learn tomorrow.

Keep growing, keep learning and keep paying it forward!!

What do you do when you are a 5 lb Pomeranian who’s cold in San Diego…you wear a jacket and snuggle on the heating pad!

Usually Pom Poms are warm enough with their natural “fur coat”, but my babies like to be warm and are always snuggling under covers.

When leaving your house, it’s best to ignore your dog as your eye contact and the sound of your voice can be stimulating and make it hard for your dog to be calm while you’re gone.

If you need to satisfy your desire to say good bye to your dog, do it 15 - 30 mins before you leave. That way you feel satisfied and it gives your dog time to calm down before you leave the house.

When my Poms try and use their cute lil faces to stop me from leaving the house without them…I mentally think to myself “mama’s gotta go make some money so you fur balls can eat”! I think it, but don’t say it, so my boys can stay calm and sleep while mama’s working!

❤️

I’m thankful for a lot of things this past year... and one of those things was the opportunity to work side-by-side with Jojo () here in SD!

I met Jojo at a Training Cesar’s Way class at Cesar's Dog Psychology Center. I’ve attended several TCW classes, and each time I got to know Jojo a little better. What I learned during the TCW classes was amazing, but the people I met during those classes, were even more amazing!

We kicked off Jojo’s week in SD with a great pack walk that brought together some of my clients, along with another local trainer, Kelly Whelan (), and some of her clients.

Jojo talked to each person to get to know them a bit, then offer tips for them to practice during the walk to help deal with behaviors like pulling, barking, excitement, anxiousness and nervousness.

Subtle changes, like the way you hold the leash, or how much leash you give your dog during a walk, can make all the difference in whether or not your dog feels connected to you during the walk. With no connection, a dog is more likely to “do their own thing”, instead of following your leadership.

Cesar says “always walk with a purpose” when you walk your dog. Jojo teaches people about their own energy, and the things they can do to make their dog feel like they are waking with a purpose!

Thank you Jojo for an incredible week and I look forward to continuing to learn from you!

Over 60 Pomeranians walked through Balboa park in our 7th Annual Pom Pom Halloween walk yesterday!!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Halloween and our love for Pom Poms! We even had a few non-Poms join our walk, which made the event even better!!!

Thank you Just Food For Dogs for coming to our event and handing out samples!! My dogs love JFFD treats and food, especially the Venison & Squash. My dogs think I’ve lost my mind as I usually don’t give them human food! Haha

Our group did a great job at keeping the dogs fairly calm during the walk…so by the time we took our group photo and video at the end of the walk, it was time for everyone to celebrate!!

Can’t wait to do it again next year!!

This will be our last Pomeranian event…so we are inviting anyone and everyone to join us to celebrate Halloween with our dogs!

All breeds welcome, dogs must be respectful in a crowd.

Human and dog costumes are optional. Please bring water for your dog in case it’s warm.

We meet at the large water fountain in front of the Reuben Fleet Science Theater. After the group is gathered and had time to socialize, we’ll walk to the Plaza de Panama to regroup, then walk to the Organ Pavilion. Hopefully the day event at the Pavilion will be over so we can all line up on the stairs for a group photo. Depending on the number of people, we might need to take several groups photos!!

If you join us and experience any behavioral challenges with your dog during the event, I can give you some tips on how make your dog feel more comfortable.

Please don’t bring your dog if they are nervous. Large events have a lot of energy, which is great for the humans and some dogs, but can be overwhelming for shy and/or nervous dogs. This is not the right event to help socialize a shy/nervous dog. If you have any questions about this, please DM me.

Please share this with your friends and family in San Diego!!

Come celebrate Halloween with us!!!

When I first started working with Pluto, he was terrified of the sight and sound of water. Turning on the hose, or approaching him with a bucket of water would terrify him to the point he was willing to choke himself out to get away. Even after losing a battle with a skunk, Pluto wouldn’t let his family give him a bath.

The thought of swimming would spark pure panic in his eyes, but it’s a great way to help build a dog’s confidence (if done correctly), so it became our goal!

For the past several months, I’ve been working Pluto on a treadmill while slowly introducing the sight and sound of water. It took a few months before I started to see his fear begin to subside. Once he was comfortable with the sight and sound of water again, it was time to conquer the pool.

I used light leash pressure to lead him to the edge of the pool, then without much hesitation, he stepped down to the first step by himself!!! Since he was nervous to get into the pool, I didn’t want to use sound as it can startle a nervous dog, so I had to express my extreme happiness in another way, hence the fist pumps!!!

From there, I used light leash pressure, lowered my body and held the leash parallel to the ground so I could encourage Pluto to step down to the Baja shelf…and he did it!!!!

My client texted me this weekend to say they went swimming with Pluto and his brother Neptune for the first time!!!!

Obi liked showing off his loose leash walking skills in his last video, so he wanted to show off more of his good manners.

He’s learned that good things happen when he gives me eye contact…aka looking at me for direction. His soft eye contact can get him released to go smell while on a walk, or released to eat or even take a treat. I also wait for eye contact before dogs can get in or out of my car. Good things happen when you build a relationship with the dog and teach them the importance of eye contact.

Cesar teaches things in threes as it helps people remember the info, and one of my favorite sayings of his is “direction, protection, then affection”. When you give a dog those items, in that order, you work to gain their trust and respect, in addition to their love!

Obi has a lot of big beautiful teeth in that mouth, but he has learned to have a soft mouth, so I can even leave my fingers in his mouth as he was taking and eating the treat!

Now that’s a good boy!!!!
❤️

I’ve been swimming with Neptune this week to help drain some of his energy. Today he taught me that a dog can still bark and growl while they swim, I didn’t know that until today!

To get Neptune to do laps, I use a leash to guide him around the pool, then softly use my fingertips on his hips to pivot him for another lap. The goal is to use the least amount of pressure needed to get him to pivot for another lap instead of heading for the pool exit.

In the second video, I’m asking Neptune to trust me and swim calmly in place with my guidance. This was his first attempt, and after a few seconds, he completely relaxed and calmly swam in place…that’s what made me so happy at the end of the video.

Swimming can definitely build a dog’s confidence, but it can also build trust between you and the dog as you’re asking the dog to follow your leadership in the pool.

Take the time and effort to build a relationship with dogs so they learn they can trust you.

I taught Koa how to walk on a treadmill today and he did really well!

Before I turned it on, I used a leash to guide him on and off of the machine several times. Part of the lesson was him learning that I control when he gets on, and when he gets off the machine.

When I turned it on for the first time he was hesitant to walk, but his mom encouraged him from the front of the treadmill until he got comfortable.

Part of the challenge for dogs is their instincts tell them that when the ground is moving, it’s likely an earth quake and they better run to safety.

In order for you to override a dog’s instinct to run away (flight), you have to be calm & confident AND work to gain their trust. I took Koa to one of Cesar Millan’s training classes, so he trusts me and we have an amazing bond!

He jumped off a few times trying to get away from the exercise (avoidance), but every time he jumped off, I stopped the machine, guided him back on, and we started again. The lesson being that we end the exercise on my terms, not on his terms.

He’s a very smart dog and it’s common for him to test the boundaries of anything new, but with consistency, he was able to do several short sessions, with breaks in between.

During his breaks, he got praise from his mom and myself, and you could see how proud he was of himself!!

For the last round, I waited for him to be in a calm state of mind, then ended the exercise on a good note so he’ll have a positive memory of the new machine.

Obi wanted to show off his amazing loose leash walking skills after I bragged about him yesterday.

When he looks at me for direction, his eyes are always soft and happy. That big Rottie smile makes me smile every time!!

He usually sits right away, but this time he was focused on the camera (after all, he is a handsome dude!!), so I used soft leash pressure to remind him to sit. I made him wait while I traded hands with the camera and leash so I would be ready when I released him to smell.

I’ve never taught him to “heel”, instead I use leash pressure to communicate as we walk so he understands what’s expected of him during our walk. When he stays in a follower state of mind, we have amazing walks!!

So proud of this handsome boy!!
