November 7-13, 2021 is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week takes place during the first full week of November in recognition of the various shelters that provide care to millions of displaced animals in America. Yes, millions! The observance also serves to acknowledge the hard-working people supporting the efforts with their work at the shelters. Local shelters are great at finding new homes for homeless pets, but it’s not all they do. They rescue and rehabilitate injured or abused animals too, and they reunite lost pets with their original families. They serve communities by saving their animals every day.

Many animal shelters are non-profit. This means they depend on donations and grants to stay open even when the service they provide is so vital to civil orderliness. Shelters primarily serve the function of finding a home for stray animals, but they also facilitate reuniting lost pets with their house owners and may provide animal health services, behavioral evaluations, training, pet-sitting, grooming, and humane education. Although they play a crucial role in society, animal shelter staff work tirelessly to rescue and help animals for often below-average wages, making it even more important to dedicate a special holiday to thank them.

Halloween is a fun holiday filled with treats, costumes, and celebration, but this combination doesn’t always equal a good time for our furry friends. Activity on the streets outside, strangers in costumes at the door, and changes to their nightly routine can cause a lot of stress to your pet. Here are a few tips to keep in mind tonight and helpful links to ensure that you have a safe and happy Halloween

Don’t be superstitious, it's National Black Cat Day! October 27th celebrates the beauty of these sleek creatures. The day also seeks to raise awareness about the low adoption rates for black cats.

This time of year, black cats may be used for spooky Halloween decor and scary stories. However, these felines deserve the love and attention just as much as their tabby equivalents. Old notions have given these furry creatures a bad reputation. Today is about turning that reputation around.

If your home has one of these beautiful cats we dare you to post a picture with the anywhere on social media to show them off!

October 17-23, 2021 is National Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week

National Veterinary Technician Week provides an opportunity to recognize veterinary technicians’ contributions in the day-to-day function of veterinary practices all throughout the country.

Veterinary Technicians are integral players on the veterinary healthcare team. They are on the frontlines, compassionately working with clients whose beloved animals need care. They work tirelessly in exam rooms, labs, and operating rooms, putting to work their vast technical and scientific knowledge treating and caring for every species of animal. Their broad skills – both professional and personal – allow veterinarians to work more efficiently and effectively. And they do it all with love and a smile, day after day.

We value veterinary technicians every day of the year and thank them for all they do. During National Veterinary Technician Week, we honor their commitment to compassionate, high-quality veterinary care for all animals. Please join us in celebrating these important team members.

Hey all WE WON!!! Woo hoo!

We did pretty great in our speeches! Thanks to all who helped or tried to help. A couple of you couldn’t get in and that happens. Every one who did get in did an amazing job and there were a few new supporters along the way. Special thanks to Commissioner Steve Padilla for so eloquently and clearly explaining and supporting Option B.

There were 43 public speakers.
Four spoke only to environmental and didn’t address A or B.
Thirteen speakers supported Option A, some of them eloquently.
The rest (25) were Team FIDO!

The Item was called at 9:24am and the motions to adopt as amended with Option B passed at 1:33pm

SO CLOSE! The amendment to adopt B over A only won by a 6-5 vote.
The final vote do adopt as amended with Option and other changes to the Northern Area and week control was:
7-3 and not without it’s drama. Initially the vote was called at 6-3 because one of the Commissioners had left. But he was still available and they him back to make the 7th vote to complete the Item and We Win!

🔴🔴🔴 Deadline to get support letters to the Coastal Commission in support of FIDO’s Option B is TONIGHT (Friday June 4th) at 5:00 PM !!!!!

Please go to www.FIDOSD.org and follow the link to submit an email.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ EMERGENCY! ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ We were thrown a curve ball by the Coastal Commission staff. We are in danger of losing the dog park as we know it and need your help!

Covid, while horrible in general, has overall been really great for the human-animal bond. We’ve been spending more time with our pets, more of us have gotten pets and we’ve learned the value of a snuggle buddy during stressful times. Unfortunately it had been a little more challenging to the human-veterinarian bond. Long waits to be seen, triaging for the most critical patients and closing to others, limited appointments, etc. We just want to let everyone know that this is as distressing to us as it is to you. We are all working as hard as we can and we are making some pivots in how we practice that will help alleviate some of this until we are back to normal. We have learned a lot and remain here for you. Let’s all be kind to each other. 😘
