Day 38 in chicken ICU...
I am fairly positive that if I had known then (when her injury first occurred) what I know now she would be much further along in her healing process by now, but the fact that she is still alive and healing (although slowly) tells me that I am doing something right.
I think she knows when I have the camera on her now... LOL! She is getting quite camera shy and is refusing to participate. Normally, when I say, "Peep, peep, peep," she will return with the same... Peep, peep, peep. Then we will go back and forth like this for a bit. It's so sweet!
Her wry neck is still ever present. Sometimes I get discouraged, but then I remember that, in everything that I have read, it could take several weeks for it to resolve itself. I just have to keep the extra vitamin E and Selenium up.
She is tube fed 3 times a day a total of 40ml with each feeding now. Her feed is a well-pureed mixture of her regular feed that has been drenched in water overnight, sunflower seeds, extra Vitamin B, extra Vitamin E, Selenium, Rooster Booster, Probiotics, Electrolytes, and enough water to make it a medium thickness puree. I have to wrap her snuggly in a towel now otherwise she will fight and kick. She's pooping so much I have to change out the towel in the bottom of her change every day. Boy, do those cecal poops stink... LOL!
The top of her head still has the scab, but considering the fact that it was just her skull showing when the injury first happened, I could imagine there is a lot more healing going on under it than what had to happen with the back of her neck. She is getting new feathers on the back of her neck as well.
The sore on her chest is scabbed over and healing. I have been spraying this with Vetericyn Plus once a day, in the morning, but will be switching to neosporin soon.
She tries to preen herself regularly and can actually reach her neck under her wing now to do so. She gets her Metacam once a day in the morning still so I think that helps, too.
I do love my chickens!
*It's okay to laugh... It was funny! I wasn't hurt... much. 🤣😂🤣
