I have been working in the veterinary profession for over 20 years and to say that the profession is catty and resistant is an understatement. I have experienced some of the harshest treatment from people who should have been leaders within the field. I have been at times dehumanized by individuals, used as a scapegoat, gaslit, and made to feel that I was so small that wasn’t worth being in the presence of those around me. My entire career goal was to change that mindset when teaching my students and improve the fact that we can take people under our wings. After over 20 years and with an extensive background within this field I continue to see a lack of DEI&B around me yet the victimization surrounds us all. We wonder why our students are failing, we wonder why we have shortages in our hospitals, we wonder why things are not changing. I will tell you why. It is due to things like what the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators - AVTE just did today with my complete denial of even allowing me to be on a ballot for an election for their board for change. This comes only a year after NAVTA did the exact same thing, and 1 day after I spoke freely of my concerns with veterinary technician education today and how there needs to be change in which Todd Van D**e from AVTE commented on the post. These associations are relying on member dues each year, but only want to listen and only want participation from certain members. This unfairness needs to change.
