Street Outreach Services and Veterinary Street Outreach Services

Street Outreach Services and Veterinary Street Outreach Services SOS & Vet SOS are innovative outreach services of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium which address the unique problems of homeless individuals.

Traveling in a medical van to sites throughout San Francisco, the dedicated SOS team of doctors, nurses, outreach workers, and volunteers creates “clinics without walls” at soup kitchens, on city streets, under freeway overpasses, and in parks. By going directly to homeless people - meeting them on their own turf - the SOS team builds relationships of trust, and breaks down the barriers that keep

homeless people from the care they need and deserve. SOS provides on-site preventive and urgent health care, connection to a medical home for long-term primary care, linkage to other resources (mental health, substance recovery, dental services, legal support, etc.), assistance with housing and benefits applications, distribution of health and hygiene supplies, and transportation assistance to over a thousand homeless San Franciscans every year. VET SOS services are provided by volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians through the use of a specially equipped mobile outreach van. VET SOS provides veterinary exams, basic veterinary procedures, vaccinations, referrals & transportation for free spay/neuter surgery, information about service animals in rental housing and responsible pet ownership, and health care information & referrals to their homeless humans. VET SOS uses a specially outfitted van to provide its outreach and veterinary services in selected areas of San Francisco that are inhabited by homeless individuals with companion animals.

A huge thank you to SOS community partner, Simply The Basics, for their generous donations of hygiene bags for our patients living on the streets. Their regular contributions of reusable totes filled with essentials like hand sanitizer, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and sunblock- always accompanied by thoughtful notes- play an important role in supporting the health of unhoused people. Hygiene bags not only provide muchneeded supplies but also allow our SOS team to focus on building meaningful connections and delivering quality healthcare to our patients. We’re so grateful for the kindness of the staff & volunteers 💙🚐🩺

It was an honor to attend Felton Institute’s Black History Month Block Party! This incredible
event brought the community together with food, music, and vital resources. SOS was proud to
be among the service providers present, offering medical care to unhoused attendees, alongside
Safer Together, who provided STI testing and screenings, and Rafiki Coalition, who provided
culturally affirming wellness services.

We’re grateful to be part of such a meaningful event,
working alongside amazing organizations to strengthen community support. A big thank you to everyone who made this event possible and to all who attended! 💛🖤❤️

Huge thanks to ❤️🐾, one of our Vet SOS program’s most vital community partners! For years, they’ve provided us with a location to host our pop-up clinics in what was once their “Green Triangle”—now beautifully renovated into the Fritz Cope Dog Park, allowing us to serve our clients more safely and efficiently in this outdoor, fenced, & centrally-located
space. Plus, they generously fund spay/neuter surgeries and emergency care for our patients and contribute free storage space and parking for our Vet SOS van. We’re so grateful for their ongoing support! As you can see, their renewed turf is a huge hit with some Vet SOS pups!🌱☀️

For many years, Warm Wishes, a 100% volunteer-run organization, was an invaluable partner to SOS, providing us with free backpacks filled with rain ponchos, gloves, and beanies to help our unhoused patients stay warm and dry through the cold, rainy season. Their generosity brought comfort and relief to so many, and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication.

As this marks Warm Wishes’ final year of operations, we want to extend our deepest thanks to their founder, Bill Hamm, & other generous volunteers for the years of partnership and kindness they have shown. The impact of their support will be felt long beyond this year, and we are honored to have worked alongside them.

Thank you, Warm Wishes, for your many years of commitment to those who need it most in the Bay
Area. 💙🩺🚐

In loving memory of Oreo and Hatchet, two incredible dogs who brought love, loyalty, and joy to their families. 💙

Oreo, Christina’s beloved 14-year-old Papillon mix, was her faithful companion. Together, they navigated life’s challenges, from living between shelters and on the street to eventually securing housing in an SRO. Since connecting with Vet SOS in 2015, Oreo received care for ailments like fleas, infections, and, later, age-related conditions including congestive heart failure. “He’s my son,” Christina said proudly, describing the large picture of Oreo on her wall alongside photos of him with his littermates. She cherished their time at the park, recalling her favorite memories of “enjoying his happiness.” ☀️

Hatchet, David’s cherished 17-year-old Terrier mix, was a remarkable buddy. David first brought Hatchet to Vet SOS, when he was a puppy 16 years ago, during a time when David was unhoused and living in a tent. Over the years, Hatchet received regular checkups, vaccines, medications, and pet supplies from Vet SOS, all of which helped him thrive. David, now housed, recently welcomed a new puppy into his life, and Hatchet played the role of mentor, using his final months to help raise the pup & “keep him in line”. 🐾

Oreo and Hatchet were more than pets—they were family, companions through life’s hardest and happiest moments. To Christina and David: Thank you for giving Oreo and Hatchet lives filled with love and for sharing your and their incredible stories with us. To our supporters: Your kindness made their journeys possible, and we are endlessly grateful.
Rest in peace, Oreo and Hatchet. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts.🩵

The essential work of our Street Outreach Services program wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our volunteer medical providers! Every provider in our SOS program donates their time to deliver compassionate medical care to those who need it most. ✨

Today we celebrate Dr. Katie Taylor, who has been a vital part of SOS since 2019. Her compassion, expertise, and commitment have been invaluable over the past five+ years. Dr. Katie has recently transitioned to another role that doesn’t currently allow her time to
volunteer with SOS, but she plans to return as soon as she can. 🩺⚕️

We are so grateful for her contributions to our program and patients and look forward to seeing the amazing impact she continues to make in caring for the unhoused. Thank you, Dr. Katie! 💙🚐

Rain or shine, Vet SOS clinics are here for our patients—and we couldn’t do it without our incredible volunteers 🌧️✨! As a small but mighty staff team, we rely heavily on the generosity of our volunteers who take time out of their busy lives to make these clinics possible.

A huge shoutout to every volunteer who shows up, even in downpours, to ensure our patients get the care they need. Your dedication inspires us every day ☀️!And let’s not forget our Vet SOS pet owners—many of whom walk long distances, carrying their furry companions through the rain, to be seen at our pop-up outdoor clinics. 🐾🌈

Thank you, Vet SOS team! 🩵🩺

In 2024, SOS made a powerful impact, reaching over 1000 unhoused individuals with our mobile medical care and resources. We trained over 30 future healthcare providers, equipping them with skills to serve vulnerable populations while fostering meaningful connections with patients. Together, we distributed lifesaving Narcan, hygiene kits, and critical supplies like socks and body wipes—all made possible through the support of our donors, partner organizations, and dedicated volunteers. ✨

Thank you for helping us create change in 2024. Here’s to making an even greater impact in
the year ahead! 🚐🩺

A huge thanks from Vet SOS to for their generous donation of pet strollers to support our mobility-challenged and senior patients, like sweet Poochie! Poochie has been bravely battling recurrent facial masses, and this stroller is a game-changer for getting her to appointments while keeping her cozy and comfortable.

Pet strollers also play a critical role for Vet SOS families with not yet fully vaccinated puppies who need to stay off the ground—especially important now with parvo cases rising during this San Francisco rainy season.
Thank you, , for helping us support our patients and their loving owners!

Every three months, Project Homeless Connect (PHC) brings together organizations like SFCCC’s Street Outreach Services (SOS) to provide essential services for San Francisco’s unhoused community.

By uniting healthcare, housing support, and other resources in one place, this “one stop shopping” collaboration makes it much easier for unhoused people to access the support they need. SOS is honored to be a partner of PHC since their inception 20 years ago!

Thank you to all of our supporters and partners who make our work possible. Best wishes to you
for happy, healthy holidays! ✨🩺🚐🎄

Last month our SOS team partnered up with the .institute at Mother Brown’s Kitchen to offer free health care, pet supplies, and referrals to veterinary care! ✨

Mother Brown’s Kitchen provides essential services to San Francisco’s unhoused, formerly unhoused, and food-insecure residents. Located in the Bayview neighborhood, they serve as a hub for warm meals and community support.

Mother Brown’s Kitchen and SOS share a mission to support unhoused individuals by providing accessible, compassionate, and holistic services. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to provide essential resources to those in need. ✨🩺🚐🐾⚕️

This , we’re celebrating the impact of our SOS and Vet SOS programs. For over 40 years, we’ve provided lifesaving care to unhoused San Franciscans and their beloved pets, supporting over 1,000 people and 500 animals each year.

But the heart of our work is best told through the stories of those we serve—like Curtis, Maloa, Bella, July, and Curtis—and the dedicated volunteers and staff—like Adrienne and Dr. Katie, who make it possible.

In the spirit of giving thanks, SOS wants to express our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible volunteers who helped create hygiene kits during this year’s Hygiene Harvest! 🍁🍂🪥

These kits do more than provide essential items for unhoused people—they offer comfort, dignity, and a bridge to connection. Often serving as icebreakers, giving a hygiene kit to someone on the street helps our team initiate relationships with our patients which can lead to engagement with other services. 🚐🩺⚕️

We’re deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication of our volunteers in making this initiative possible. ✨💙

These generous donations make such a difference in the lives of pets and the community we serve. We’re so grateful for companies that care about our four-legged friends as much as we do! 💙
