Street Outreach Services and Veterinary Street Outreach Services

Street Outreach Services and Veterinary Street Outreach Services SOS & Vet SOS are innovative outreach services of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium which address the unique problems of homeless individuals.

Traveling in a medical van to sites throughout San Francisco, the dedicated SOS team of doctors, nurses, outreach workers, and volunteers creates “clinics without walls” at soup kitchens, on city streets, under freeway overpasses, and in parks. By going directly to homeless people - meeting them on their own turf - the SOS team builds relationships of trust, and breaks down the barriers that keep

homeless people from the care they need and deserve. SOS provides on-site preventive and urgent health care, connection to a medical home for long-term primary care, linkage to other resources (mental health, substance recovery, dental services, legal support, etc.), assistance with housing and benefits applications, distribution of health and hygiene supplies, and transportation assistance to over a thousand homeless San Franciscans every year. VET SOS services are provided by volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians through the use of a specially equipped mobile outreach van. VET SOS provides veterinary exams, basic veterinary procedures, vaccinations, referrals & transportation for free spay/neuter surgery, information about service animals in rental housing and responsible pet ownership, and health care information & referrals to their homeless humans. VET SOS uses a specially outfitted van to provide its outreach and veterinary services in selected areas of San Francisco that are inhabited by homeless individuals with companion animals.

SOS is celebrating our 6th anniversary of partnership with The Gubbio Project at St. John the Evangelist church! The Gubbio Project offers a clean, comfortable, and quiet space for unhoused people to rest during the day when shelters aren’t available, while our SOS Nurse Practitioner and outreach staff offer our always free, always drop-in health services in the church garden. We’re incredibly grateful for Gubbio’s partnership as we work together to uplift unhoused people in San Francisco. 🩺🚐⚕️

A huge shout out from Vet SOS to our community partner SF AMC, and their incredible vet team for sponsoring the surgical care of our patient, Kona. A sweet 4-year-old terrier mix, she came to see Vet SOS for an ear infection, but our team quickly observed that Kona needed an operation to repair an overgrowth of scar tissue in her inner ears, causing pain & hearing loss. We sprang into action to help this scruffy little lady! 🚐🐾

Thanks to SFAMC’s generosity and expertise, Kona underwent bilateral total ear canal ablation (TECA) and is now on the road to recovery. We are so grateful for SFAMC’s partnership and are thrilled Kona got the care she needed. Collaboration truly makes a difference for Vet SOS pets and their families! 🩺🩵

Our SOS team is proud to provide not only health care services but also these essential hygiene kits for our unhoused neighbors in San Francisco.

Every hygiene kit we distribute is more than just supplies; it’s a bridge to connection and often much needed medical care. 🩺🚐✨

Big thanks to for their donations of high-quality socks and to for their donations of soothing body wipes! 💕✨

If you’d like to help, we frequently give out over 100 hygiene kits per week so we’re always accepting donations of hygiene supplies and help from our community to put them together!

Earlier this month, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC)’s CEO, Dr. Kyu Rhee, his chief of staff, and guests from California Primary Care Association (CPCA) visited our SOS
program to learn about our mission to support unhoused individuals in San Francisco and, through
Vet SOS, their companion animals! We were excited to showcase our work and our SOS mobile
clinic, and truly appreciate their support of SFCCC health centers. ✨🚐🩺🐾

At Vet SOS, we’re proud to provide free veterinary care to unhoused San Franciscans, including crucial vaccinations for their beloved pets - like this adorable pup. These vaccines not only protect individual animals but also safeguard our entire community by preventing the spread of diseases. 🦠💉

Community health is a shared responsibility. By keeping your pet’s vaccinations up to date, you’re helping to keep all pets—and people—safe and healthy. Thank you to our community partner Animal Care & Control San Francisco for providing us with free vaccines that we can deliver to our clients & to our gentle volunteer veterinarians like Dr. Outi. 🐾🚐

SFCCC recently teamed up with Precita Eyes Muralists to bring a vibrant new mural to life in our office. Introducing “Colors of Community Health”—a stunning piece that celebrates the intersection of healthcare and daily life.

We think our mural beautifully captures the diversity of what is defined as “medicine” and highlights the power of everyday people and activities as key elements of the healing process.

A huge thank you to muralists, Gabi and Somer, for their creativity and dedication in leading our
community to design, paint, and turn our vision into this magnificent artwork. 🎨🖌️✨

Swipe right to explore different sections of the mural and let us know which part resonates with you
the most! 🎨✨

Red=food as medicine, Orange= family & culture as medicine, Yellow= nature as medicine,
Blue=street outreach as medicine, Green= political activism as medicine, Turquoise= wellness as
medicine, Purple= community as medicine 💕❤️

With San Francisco’s increased sweeps of homeless encampments, our SOS team faces heightened challenges but remains more determined than ever. Many of our patients have been displaced and are struggling to access essential healthcare, as the sweeps leave them with few options. While outreaching in Bayview, we’ve found several protest notes in places that were once home to individuals who depended on our support.

Despite these difficulties, our mobile services continue to offer essential care to unhoused individuals. We are committed to supporting those in need during these trying times. If you encounter someone who could benefit from our services, please reach out. Consider donating or exploring our Amazon wish list to help us sustain vital care and resources for those on our city
streets. 💙🚐🩺 ✨

Dr. Durfee, a long-time volunteer veterinarian with Vet SOS (now retired), returned for a day to spread his magic! 🐾✨ He worked alongside current volunteers, Dr. Outi (veterinarian) and Julie (veterinary assistant) and shared lots of affection with Vet SOS pets. After nearly a decade of service to Vet SOS and a move to the East Coast, Dr. Durfee shared his wisdom and love for our work in the San Francisco community. Thank you, Dr. Durfee, for remaining dedicated to Vet SOS after all these years.

Last week we celebrated the essential role of community health centers in our community. Collectively SFCCC’s 12 member clinics & our own SOS team provide essential health services and support to over 110,000 San Franciscans-10,000 of those are unhoused or marginally housed. Together, we’re a united network dedicated to making a real difference in our communities, witnessing the strength and resilience of the people we serve and honored to be part of their journey towards better health and hope. 🚐✨💙

As we enter August, Vet SOS looks forward to sharing some favorite summer moments starting with our recent visit with this sweet pup, July, and her loving owner, Maloa. July visited us the first time for vaccines and has since returned several times to receive treatment for two very uncomfortable ear infections and a referral for periodontal treatment 🦷🪥. Thanks to Maloa’s care and the hard work of Vet SOS staff, volunteers, and our wonderful partner organization July was able to celebrate her birthday (on July 4th, of course) free of itchy ears and with a brighter smile! ☀️✨

When Vet SOS first met Juju and her guardian, we provided her with vaccines, flea control, and a voucher for a free spay procedure. When we saw Juju again several months later, her guardian said she’d recently developed a serious skin infection, including excessive paw licking, ear scratching, alopecia, and interdigital swelling- she was one very uncomfortable pup!

Our skilled veterinary team quickly administered allergy medication to Juju, purchased with a supplies grant from Banfield Foundation, and have continued to provide her with boosters every few months since. During two particularly difficult flare ups of her skin irritation, when she lost almost all of her fur, Vet SOS also treated Juju with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medications, in addition to allergy medication, to heal an infection and control her allergic reactions. Juju’s guardian is now able to keep her skin irritation and allergic dermatitis under control.

Thanks to support of Vet SOS, Banfield Foundation, and her loving guardian, Juju happily sported her honeybee costume on Halloween and was pretty in pink on Valentine’s Day this year! 🐝🌸
