Its not uncommon for tiny little mushrooms and fungi to pop up when using our substrates. Our substrates encourage the growth of beneficial fungi, which contribute to nutrient cycling and the overall health of your BioActive set-up. Our substrates include so many ingredients to make this happen!

Rinsing all of the substrate off of your plants roots is so very important! Even if you buy your plants from us, you should do it because we do not use pesticides in our greenhouse, meaning it is bug friendly-ish :-) If you don't rinse all the substrate off you could be introducing bug eggs and other pest.

Frogs possess a specialized third eyelid known as the nictitating membrane, which serves a dual purpose. This unique membrane covers their eyes when submerged, enabling them to keep their eyes open underwater. When out of the water, the nictitating membrane helps maintain eye moisture and protect the eye when they are eating prey. This membrane is semi-translucent so they can see through it a bit.

This White's tree's name is Sticky. He has lived with our family for almost 20 years!

This is one cool plant. If you haven't seen this Pilea plant, when you do you will fall in ❤️! It has incredibly textured, dense leaves. It loves moisture and thrives in my high moisture Dart Frog enclosures.

To care for the Moon Valley Pilea plant, provide it with bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings.

Another desert build inspiration pic. Sand Stone comes in a few different shades of yellow, tan, lavender, and red. All containing different minerals that make the color change and all coming from various locations, not all in the Grand Canyon area. When we visit expos we bring all 4 colors to sell. We don't at this time have it available for sale online. Should we list it?

More desert build inspiration. This beautiful rock pictured is called Sand Stone. It is one of my favorite rocks to use in builds. When pieces of it rub together little bits of sand come off, making it east to carve if you want to fit pieces together for a build.

How it was formed: The formation of the sandstone at the Grand Canyon began over 500 million years ago when layers of sand and sediment accumulated in an ancient sea. As more and more sediment accumulated, the weight of the overlying layers compressed the sediments beneath. This process, known as compaction, pressed the loose grains together. Additionally, minerals carried by groundwater acted as cement, binding the grains into solid rock. The uplifting of the land and the erosive power of the Colorado River, acting over millions of years, exposed and sculpted these sedimentary layers, creating the breathtaking sandstone formations that characterize the Grand Canyon's landscape.

I recently went on a trip to the Grand Canyon. While I was there I found that everywhere I looked was inspiration for a desert terrarium build! If this was in a terrarium imagine all of the opportunities for basking and hiding! So MANY choices = happy reptiles! Even though it was "winter" when we visited you can bet I watched where I placed my hands when exploring.

Desert-dwelling species tend to have more sparse enclosures in comparison to a Dart Frog enclosure. But adding a pile of rocks to the hot side and cool side you can create an opportunity for your animals to burrow just like they would in the wild and enable them to thermoregulate to just the perfect temperature and have a nice hiding place to snuggle in. Add in some branches and a couple nice plants and your all set up! I always try to imagine that if you are an animal that slithers it must be interesting to slither on so many differing textures. Do you think your desert animal has a favorite texture in its enclosure?

The Neoregelia Tiger Cub Bromeliad come from the South American rainforest. In its habitat is grows as an epiphyte, securing itself to tree bark with its roots. It collects rainfall in the center cup providing water to frogs and geckos. When it is time for the bromeliad to reproduce it grow off shoots at its base called pups. When the pups have grown a bit and the stems connecting it to the mother plant have grown woody it can be cut and mounted in a different enclosure. When this plant matures a purple flower will grow deep within the cup. This Bromeliad is a smaller in size Brom and can easily grow in a higher humidity/Rainforest terrarium.

This is how a gecko can walk up glass, or hang out upside down with no problem. So the next time your gecko jumps out of your hand to run up the wall just outside of your reach- blame the Setae for making it possible!

I have always been extremely curious of the how and why when it comes to animal biology.

Ps- I have blamed the Setae many, many times 🤣

Check out our LIVE Mood Moss online. It makes a great addition to any Rainforest BioActive set up. Planting tip: Mood Moss really appreciates bright light. So place it out in the open where it will get maximum LED or UVB light. It won't do too well if you place it in the shade of another plant. DM if you have any questions :-)

String of Dolphins is a vining succulent that can be planted in a Desert or Grassland BioActive enclosure as long as you plant it in with carnivours as this plant is mildly toxic.

When a cute little mushroom pop up in my BioActive enclosure you can hear me say "aw", if anyone else is around I can guarantee the question of "Is it ok? I mean is it safe?" will be asked, The answer is YES!

Aside from being cute as can be! Mushrooms help break down organic matter, they release essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon back into the enclosure. This nutrient cycling is essential for the growth of plants, its a good sign that your mini-ecosystem you worked so hard to create is working!

Our BioActive Supply substrates encourage the growth of little mushrooms because we add many different types of organic materials.
